Considering he didn't have access to Loomis and the internet he was decent enough. Certainly had potential.

He struggled with perspective and form, but considering he was self-taught and that his resources were limited, I think he showed potential.
It's important to note that most of Hitler's paintings were made in his early 20s, and that he was only 17 or 18 when he applied to the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts.

I remember reading an article a few years back where someone presented Hitler's paintings as an art portfolio to several art academies, without revealing who had painted them, and as far as I recall, all of them said that they were good enough to be accepted, though not particularly noteworthy.

I don't think he was particularly gifted, but I do believe he could have become a competent artist.

His paintings never had any life to them, as in they didn't have that vibrant energy which made it interesting to look at. I know this because I first came across his paintings on 9gag and my first impression was, "why do these paintings look dead?" at the end of the 9gag post it read "You just enjoyed the work of Adolf Hitler" and I was like

>No wonder it looks dead, it was made by a psychopath.

>> No.3365321

Can someone provide examples of his supposedly bad perspective?

Are you sure this one is a painting by Hitler? When I Google image search it I only find it on Russian websites. His watercolors are OK but definitely 2 leagues below that oil painting. I hate to admit it, but that painting in OP is very impressive.

Someone please post a credible source that the painting in OP is really from Hitler.

he was definitely meticulous in his work but ironically didn't have much vision or creativity. He seems to have a good eye for shapes and values but not much else.

>> No.3367918

It's like his work is technically good but horribly bland especially in his use of colours and atmosphere.

>> After seeing the paintings Hitler submitted to the Vienna art academy, John Gunther wrote "They are prosaic, utterly devoid of rhythm, color, feeling, or spiritual imagination.

>>They are architect's sketches: painful and precise draftsmanship; nothing more. No wonder the Vienna professors told him to go to an architectural school and give up pure art as hopeless".

>>One modern art critic was asked to review some of his paintings without being told who painted them and judged them "quite good". The different style in which he drew human figures, however, the critic said, represented a profound uninterest in people

>> No.3368046

>>3368033
This argument is retarded and completely disconnected from the reality of art schools. To be accepted to an art school, even one as prestigious as the one in Vienna, you don't have to be a creative genius. A sense of color and rhythm was never expected of young teenagers who tried to apply. The reason why he was rejected is that he did not submit enough portraits and figure drawings, instead it was full of architectural landscapes. He also half assed his figure drawings and the professors told him to get his priorities straight and try again. He had what it takes, but he was being an edgy fuck and probably realized that he didn't want to go somewhere that focuses on drawing humans which he did not enjoy as much.

It's doubtful that is a true authentic hitler painting. Hitler in his youth was 100% dedicated to art. Even then, his paintings lacked refined understanding of perspective, line weight, detail for organic subject, and light value. Sure, these are things that an artist can improve over time. But that requires dedication and training, not by someone toppling governments and waging world wars. Also Hitler preferred watercolor. This is an oil which might also be a large format vertical. Hitler didnt demonstrate any of these traits in his other works or the capacity to execute them effectively.

It is much more likely that Hitler comissioned this work as a reference piece, that's all.

I use tumblr just to follow art blogs and I saw a post of a collection with his work and I thought they were beautiful and amazing until I read the caption and realized who the artist was because I hadn't seen his art before. I really don't see anything mediocre or bad about them, I guess I don't have a snobby art critique eye
