I think he's starting to cut corners, in a good way. Working months on a single piece is not quite the optimal work process in this time and age.

This piece is much less appealing than his better works, but I believe he's experimenting and trying out new ways how to fasten his workflow, while keeping the impact and quality intact. I'm sure he'll find his optimal solution very soon.

Uh, no. What I mean is, Jaime's work is boring to look at. Craig's work is also boring to look at. Ruan Jia's work is gravitating towards being boring to look at for exactly the same reasons as the former artists I mentioned.

He's not doing any of the things that made him stand out so much in the first place, anymore. His color harmonies are diminishing, his forms are getting flatter, and his brushwork is pretty unremarkable now.

Top that off with the fact that he's never been a great draftsman to begin with. Now he's playing to none of his original strengths and still hasn't patched up his most major flaw.

You don't get it. It's more than just rendering. He understands how light works, he understands texture, he understands appealing shape design, he understands composition, his command over his values is arguably the best in the digital art scene, he understands edge control, he's not very good at drawing, so it's not surprising that his perspective is a little shaky, but it doesn't destroy his work, and to top it off, he(used to) has a really unique sense of color harmony that was subtle and pleasing to the eye.

The painting you posted isn't deep. It's just artistic for the sake of being artsy. There's no real idea behind it, just technique. And uninformed technique at that. The whole piece just feels arbitrary and loud to me. Just look at the number of tangents in the comp, or how the colors don't really harmonize in a pleasing way because it's a rainbow palette. I like creating small triangles in my composition like 3 and 4, or doing a sharp outline like at the left eye on the left vase, where its an indent or a point and then a line shooting out straight across from the inside of the indent or point, which in this case was the bottom pane of the window sill.

that might be the case with academic art and illustration, but there have been plenty of representational art movements that very much tried to make their work look flatter on purpose. Post-Impressionism was almost completely about flattening images, and it doesn't take much searching to find tangents in famous works by them. all depends on whether or not the artist does it on purpose and has a reason to.
