IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

dunno if this should be in the stylization thread, but how do you find your style?
I've been drawing for some time and while I'm great at copying things I see, when it comes to creating from scratch in a style I feel comfortable just doodling, it comes out in a way I feel is generic
here's an example from a couple years ago

Maybe anon is talking about 'try to draw this model in 30 seconds' type exercises? Those are great for learning gesture, flow, and getting in the habit of putting things down as shapes. Sure, do those (though not JUST those.)

If you just mean getting your whole drawing process down to super rapid then that's weird, don't do that.

Lesson 1: When shading, hold your pencil sideways like so. Some people get a penknife and carve up the side of the pencil to make the lead even longer, but that's usually unnecessary unless using a charcoal pencil.

Additionally, don't be afraid to spend a long time on your drawings. It's fine to spend some time on a drawing, have a break then come back to it. I usually can't go 5 minutes without checking the internet but I always go back to what I'm doing soon after.

Finally, I'd recommend reading Keys to Drawing and maybe then Perspective Made Easy. Both of these can be found in the book sharing thread and helped me immensely. Good luck.

Slowly rendering this starting with her body. Trying to figure out what objects to put around her to go with the wine glass that will her elevated hand; something that will actually be visible once the silk is properly shaded. What are some light weight fashion materials that are slightly transparent and light in color that I can drape her with? Any other suggestions you think I need to hear as I'm finishing this?

>>3356066
They look like they really lack volume, as if they're just completely flat. The one on the bottom right is the lesser of the evils and has a decent flow to it, but still very 2D. The subject matter reminds me of people in my old high school trying to draw anime OC, but that's more of a personal issue here. Even as sketches, I feel you should do better and learn to illustrate your figures in a 3-dimensional sense; better line control wouldn't hurt either.

>>3356037
I'm loving the colors. What media are you using? I'm not familiar with traditional painting so I don't think I can offer much useful advice considering application and such, but I feel the anatomy of the area around her clavicle should be more accurate given it's almost the focal point of the piece. Values are good besides the anomaly on her neck, seems to dark compared to the other parts of her upper body.

>>3355895
Sometimes, when I post on IG, I get very little feedback. I've always thought it was because my subject matter is niche stuff, something only impressive to someone interested in improving their own art, OR that I'm just fucking horrible. Without any comments or criticisms, I'm left to imagine whatever it could be.

Take your own advice, except for the part where you do gestures from imagination. The whole point of doing a gesture drawing is to help you understand how to convey an idea across, the ideal way is to use the least amount of lines in an abstract form that conveys movement.

This helps you understand figures and how we behave a whole lot better than simply copying them, you can't understand a person by drawing them from imagination you must observe them through body language.

despite you having a good grasp on fundamentals, i think the reason you're not getting much feedback is because of some grating contrasts going on in your rendering. if you squint at your piece, your darks are immediately met with lights, and its almost jarring to look at. im pretty shit, so i don't have any idea how you could fix something like that though...

i think the silhouette of your character is a bit boring. when he unleashes his left arm, the spikes on his left shoulder grow bigger, and I feel like that makes both of these big shapes compete for attention. i think if you put bigger shapes on the shoulders from the start, and make it so the powered up arm is even bigger than the shapes on the shoulders, it could be more impactful. also i think changing the spikes on the glove of the right arm into something more "finlike" could be cool. the upper leg design also kinda reminds me of medieval noble pants, and i think a "puffier" design there could let you switch from long boots to short ones. currently the legs are just one shape all together, so even though the idea behind the design is cool, it doesn't stand out. i hope that helps a little lol

That kind of reaction is probably originated from the fact those shitty fundie-obsessed artist doesn't realize that those popular artists put even more work and time than them.
It doesn't help that most artists rarely reveal the effort they put to develop their skills.
So these shitters quickly assume that those artists are just "cheap hacks", "skipping fundies", "probably using symbols" unlike themselves that train through the super-cool, purist, in-depth, classical fundamental principles. Not the same Anon, but focusing on the shapes of the negative space help with understanding proportions and proper placement of the figure you're drawing. Granted, you should start studying up on construction a bit first so you can understand how to apply basic shapes to your subject since you're having such a hard time applying the form. Also, be sure to try and control your strokes, there's a lot of lines going on in your image but you still don't even have the object's form properly illustrated. Plan your lines before putting down the pencil.

Different Anon here; the lips lack depth. It's only slightly evident that they're not flat but it seems like they don't adhere to the sphere shape of the lower face at all. The nose passes because it's partially above it but still looks as if it wraps around the head. The eyes are a tad jarring. I can't really say too much about it since I struggle with eye shapes myself.

In short, the only indication I see of symbol drawing are the lips. Focus on having them wrap around the dental sphere instead of the upper jaw.
Also, the ears should be lined up with the eye/brow area.

Do your own research on what you think you're missing, doing everything there in order is a good way to get burned out on stuff you don't like doing. How are you supposed to actually do this? I've had slightly better luck trying to draw the lips wrapping around the muzzle like they're wrapped on a cylinder. The dental sphere thing that I read in Hampton didn't work as well for me in more finalized drawings than the construction stage of placing them on an ovoid.

not bad. a couple strange details though and values that don't really matchup. a lot of colors are too light but you made the cast shadow from the cube on the box too dark but too light on the ground. some of the edges should be harder, like the shadow side of the sphere against the lit side of the cylinder. also the fresnel effect, as objects get more oblique in angle from you they become more reflective. i wouldn't worry about trying to throw the little nicks in, it's too easy to feel gratification from rendering little stuff like that.

keep working on new studies, don't keep working on that one (i see the date says 3/21 but not sure how long you've spent on it).

Practice drawing the oval shape as a three Dimensional object then start applying contours to it, a longitudinal and then a latitude. These lines should then be the center of the inner lips being placed and divided into halves vertically, applying the basic "M" and "W" shapes above and below the line should help with making sure it follows the curvature of the dental sphere. Pretty rigid, compositionally. Learn to use angles to add interest to a scene, instead of creating a grid. The solid brown line of the shoreline splits the image in two, and leads the eye right out of the painting - what's the focus of this? The mountain? The lake? The trees? Pick what the focus is, and then work to emphasize that. You then use color, composition, and values to do that.

Color-wise, it's too vivid, and the color composition is jumbled and confusing. Trees closest to the viewer would be lighter, more local color, and not just black and green, and the trees across the lake would be a mixture of greens and blues and greys and brown - there's more color in a landscape than just black and green. Green wouldn't be that vibrant that far away, in that kind of forest. This is symbol painting, painting what you think would be there, not what actually is, or what would be realistic.
The water is done wrong. You have no highlights/shadows of the waves, and a lake would not be a perfect mirror like this unless the water was perfectly still. Again, symbol painting.

The sky is boring, and simplistic, and symbol painting. You can't imagine more interesting clouds than this?
And, the trees are symbol painting. That's not what trees look like, that's how children draw/paint trees.
Overall, average for a completely amatuer attempt. It's not even Bob Ross level. Go look at real landscapes, and paintings from real artists, to see how they approach a subject like this. Learn and study composition, color, and rendering. Use this as your "start" position, and move on from it. Use reference. Go take pictures, or use photos from others, to find what works, and how others see landscapes, how they choose focal points, and how they build a scene that's appealing and explores what they want to show. It can be anything from a dramatic mountain, to an interesting sky, or a visually appealing vantage of a scenic view.
Keep going.

it looks fine. Objects in a room have arbitrary rotation and placement so they won't have the same vanishing point except a common height on the horizon. Place a bunch of books on your desk and see where their vanishing points are. Look around your room or the next time you go to an office/waiting room/classroom. Many objects in a scene all have different vanishing points but some common horizon or vertical line they're facing.
