Fuck it, just gonna post some characters of mine and see what you think design-wise. I wanna know my limits and how to get on track to breakin out of em. Also, my limits makin my characters look dynamic in how they move, they just don't have quite the flow or the pop that I want.

I admit that for all this time I've been drawing, I don't know too much about other artists. I definitely have influence from cartoons but really, I just try and look at people for inspiration more than anything. Wouldn't mind bein recommended some artists that have powerful, fluid figures in their work. Willard Mullin's probably one of my favorites because his work just looks so raw and punchy.

I'll say I'm also a sucker for old cartoon hashes and symbols. Stars, jumpin sweat beads and tears, exclamation points and question marks, etc. Something I found helpful for angry expressions was lookin at animals, too. The way a lion or tiger snarls, the anatomy doesn't carry over 1/1 to a face, but you can get the distortion and the power there.

I like the flat nose thing. It helps emphasize the form of the head as a whole. It's a common thing to de-emphasize noses in anime/cartoons by just making them small, however you like to emphasize the narrowness of them but not the depth. It's a very interesting cartooning theory you have. The thing is this community doesn't give a crap about any cartooning that isn't generic anime.

They're normal. There's nothing wrong with them. If your character isn't supposed to be ambiguous then that's fine but if it's a lady I think you should rethink her design, at least the put a slight emphasis on breasts and hips / hourglass shape. Doesn't need to be sexualized at all, just clearer

Not that guy, but your girl looks like a tranny, not a girl. She looks like an androgynous hermaphrodite or something. She's got an equal mix of male and female features, and does not register in my brain as either gender.

Great if you wanna appeal to the tumblr crowd, and a gender fluid character is what you're going for.

But if you want people to think of her as female, I suggest making some changes. You can make her a buff/athletic female, but you would be wise in adding more features that easily identify her as female. I wasn't sure of her gender till you said it was a girl.

On the other hand, if your goal with her design is to confuse people about her gender, then just go ahead and keep it. Again, you'll be getting brownie points from the leftards and commies, whether or not you wanna be roped into that though is on you.

That's way out of your control. I'm pretty sure whoever designed the powerpuff girls and MLP didn't want them to be sexualized, but rule of the internet that everything is and everything will be. It shouldn't discourage you from making a cohesive character design.

I only tend to post on 4chan, and I have posted on /ic/ before, but that was years ago. I've come back a little smarter and a little more skilled than I was, so this thread was to test the waters and see where I was at.

Here's some more Swanson, the main antagonist, although really he's more of an anti-hero. Just an old, tired king who's trying to undo the damage his predecessors caused, tasked with handling an army that's grown too big and unsustainable for its own good, and doing his best to make the nation of Tartaros' inevitable downfall to be the least painful it can possibly be. He's kind, patient, and understanding, and is of course loyal to his own country. He has no choice but to continue militarizing in spite of having no money for it, because it's their last chance at making some sweet trade/political deals with the other scared nations in their favor. And Tartaros is poor in resources.

>> No.3335218

I'll be honest, design wise and everything your main character isn't that good. I like the design of your other characters (Swanson and them) and would read a comic about them if you made one, but everyone saying that your stuff is amazing are probably all /beg/-tier artists that struggle to draw figures and never were able to move on to action poses so they're just jealous.

Your stuff is very stylized but would look good animated, which is probably a big problem for you. You stay away from more refined, dynamic stuff and everything is more stiff when you add color or clean it up. Not a bad thing, just that you're using an animation friendly style that makes it seem more lively. What's your endgoal though? Comic, animation, games? You just dropped heavily stylized stuff and asked for design critiques when the only design was the style of the main character and her face which most people hate.

A comic's what I'm thinkin of. Also, I don't find the term "animation friendly style" to be quantifiable. Animation varies widely in the detail used, same with comics. Which ain't to say I'm still figurin out what to do with my lines, and how to design people to sort of go with the way my main characters look, the general aesthetic, as well as how to simplify the anatomy. I guess I could say, starting at all is a good way to know if you got what it takes. You can spend the rest of your life trying to refine it until years pass, or just swallow your pride and start now and improve while you make your comic.

There are so many times I wish I started sooner. As for what it is now. Its not going to look like watchmen, but if your confident in your story and writing, then you have nothing to worry about, and its mostly going to be better then most of these slice of life comic at thats coming out every day.

Excellent stuff, definitely a noticeable John K. vibe, dynamic poses and an animator's touch. What the John K style lacks, is detail, and shading, which you might want to bulk up on, depending on which direction you want to pursue. Max Grecke and John Polidora have masteted this, and I would challenge you to try it out, just to get out of your comfort zone. You have a solid basis, I'd like to see how far you can push the quality.
