Is that really all they try to say though? Or is that just all you are able to see in it? I mean, Ruanjia used to write fucking essays about these old chinese legends his portrait paintings are based on when he posted them on his site. Maybe you are just too disconnected from the kind of mythology Ruanjia is trying to tap into in his personal work.

Needless to say, a lot of his work IS fairly brainless shit, but if you are an artist yourself, you too must have countless of sketches and paintings that don't have all that much meaning, don't you?

Try familiarizing yourself with actual artists that understand shape language, composition and storytelling/conveying emotion to the viewer - actual figurative fine artists are a good start point - instead of living in this concept art world of women in armor and dragons.
At some point you will laugh at past self for idolizing artists that produce shallow empty pieces which only strength is rendering and are filled with all sorts of issues like horrible anatomy errors, perspective, foreshortening etc. on top of not being interesting at all to being with, you dont need to be a godtier artist yourself to understand that something isnt good. They probably had the task to emulate one of their favorite artists work, in their own style, and with what they've learned up until that point (there is stuff that resembles Fenghua's and Wei Feng's style as example). It's a learning stage, they'll branch off towards their own style sooner or later anyway, there is just so much you can absorb and copy from a different artist, and trying to maintain this level of rendering, complexity and time consumption, will leave them dry very quickly.
