does anyone have any good sources on how to draw anime eyes? i know that different shapes of eyes can add to the characteristics on a drawing, so is there anywhere i can learn how to draw eyes in a certain way that adds to to my characters personality?

although anything about how to draw proper anime eyes would be fine

I don't get it, its just a couple of circles (pupil, retina, light reflection) and some fancy coloring or shading. If you can't do this then you're still stuck on symbol drawing and need to fix that first. I also recommend studying eyes from different angles as knowing that is gonna be critical to convey busy eyes.

I think CG animation is poor litmus for this. Good examples from the past might include the eye designs in Don Bluth films, the Chipettes from the animated Chipmunk movies, and a modern example might be the My Little Pony eye designs.

That said, I think even good Western eye designs can look very samey. Manga artwork is more playful with the design and color of the irises, eye shape and eyelashes (this especially). Looking at Western animated films it seems like eyes were designed with a stricter 'house style'. I do like how Western artwork has more emphasis on the eyelids though.

Study real eyes for a bit and learn how not to symbol draw them. Draw them from various angles and take notes of the different shapes they form. Keep grinding until you have a solid understanding of how the eye and each of its components move and how it looks in various angles.

Then study your favorite anime artist to see which stylization you like the most. Remember, style shouldn't take priority over structure. Even if you can draw the most detailed or prettiest eye, it will look very dumb if it doesn't look like it belongs on the face around it.

After years of semi-realism, I've been trying to imitate anime styles. I know I'm not quite there yet, but I like to think that I've started to get the gist of it.
For me it was essentially learning anything and everything pertaining to the eye; study fundies (it's a pain, I know), study eyes, study detailed pictures of irises, and study other anime artists.
I found that by learning the fundimentals first I could structure my eyes, as well as the rest of the drawing, much better and avoid the whole hyper detailed but out of place issue I used to have. It also aids in a lot more leeway for style experimenting.

This is wrong. The brain is able to understand what it's supposed to look like and places itself into the world of whatever style happens to appear. The reason why the uncanny valley happens is when the style is close enough to real life that the brain applies it's typical standards to the image. At no point does your brain register that eye as anything but. The basic reason for this is the brain enjoys finding patterns in what it consumes and applies those patterns freely.

any art history major can tell you that superflat was a reaction to that; how "flatness" is characteristic of not just the "anime style", but japanese art throughout the ages. when you look at the history of the mangaka tradition it's just a byproduct of accelerated production experienced during and after the meiji restoration. takashi murakami is on record saying that he expresses nothingness or something like that, so yeah it's pretty ironic but doesn't in any way negate anime's timely significance

besides when it comes to western art history I think all the schools that sprouted up in reaction to perceived "decadence" are far more interesting on the fact they're all so grotesque, from the pre-raphaelites to the barbizon school; any examples of a "primitivist modernism", as some academics would say

Wrong, the "anime style" is derived from ukiyo-e prints of yore; much of late 19th century post-impressionist art was predicated upon replicating the style characteristics of imported woodblock prints from east asia. Van Gogh was a huge weeb (look up Japonisme), and tried starting a commune in southern france because he thought the weather there was similar to Japans (pseudo-scientific racism was really prominent among art theoreticians at the time, who were trying to explain why japanese art was so drastically different from their western counterparts).

Other schools derived from the Arts & Crafts movement like Art Nouveau expanded heavily on this east asian influence by simplifying the form in such a way that reduces them to abstraction. I mean when you look at the art world today, over a century later where there's an over-saturation of abstracted figures the differences do sometimes look marginal, but there's still a pretty big gap between east and west that's fortunately closing.
