Does anyone have information about this painting? I saw it posted on 4chan a week or so ago and saved it. It's very interesting and I'd like some background info/your take on it

Wow, you or someone else has spammed it at other destinations over a few years at least. Strange painting, it's a tough sale.

What does it symbolise? I know nothing about art interpretation

Who cares? That's for rich customers, art critics and the artist himself to decide. As an artist you're supposed to look at the technique, composition and expression it's delivering.

Impossible to tell, bits of information might have been cropped out of the image. If not then it certainly looks like it has been tampered with from here. Take it on face value? The past, recollection and dream.

He's one of those russian artists who seem to be at home in grotesque realism.
It usually comments on dephts of human nature or social anxieties.

that's not how art works.
anyway assuming it's russian (it is) it's probably about the same stuff as all their literature is, how horribly depressing squalid but super deeeep and historical it is to be russian. there's a real dostoyevsky vibe to it, and there's the obvious comparative allusion to michelangelo type stuff

Does it matter what it's symbolizing? If you find it interesting and it invokes an emotional response, isn't that enough?
