The stuff that isn't like >>3313357 which is kinda getting there is just the same character in the same pose with very little change in expression. It relies on the text or the concept of a child to show how "cute" it is instead of aesthetic appeal. I'm sure there are people who think some of these drawing are cute though.

I'm sorry, but I just can't get behind Japanese style cuteness, or at least post-90s Japanese cuteness. It all feels very "fake", for lack of a better word

They're drawing the scientific formula of what makes something cute: Big eyes, child-like proportions, and coy posing and expressions

They use all of the elements that make a character theoretically appealing, but they never really go anywhere past the most generic form of cute. Remove your waifu's hair and clothing, and I can guarantee you that she will look identical to the zillion other cute anime characters using the exact same cute design.

>>3314017

Japanese commercial art takes a lot of inspiration from pre-war western art, architecture, mythology and fashion.

I came across this the other day. I thought it was odd seeing a 19th century western artist paint a girl in a sailor uniform, which is typically associated with Japanese school uniforms. Of course, I knew of the origin, but it's still strange seeing it in its original context, considering it's solely associated with Japan in the modern era.

Here is Ms Brisby

Over all I would say the West has cuter animal work than Japan. I do think these designs are aided by the animation though, they have some obviously volumetric features (as opposed to 'sticker faces') because of the budget going into them. With this movie at least, a lot of the cuteness comes from how the 'acting' is portrayed. I wouldn't say that Don Bluth is known for restrained or naturalistic animation but it is less dependent on stock expressions and highly stylized expressions

Are you just talking about huge eyes? Disney did that before anime was even a thing. The sensibilities Disney uses to charicature faces and expessions are more grounded and based on what real people actually look like. Anime's very simplified faces, atleast the moe kind, barely resemble real people and emote differently. Is why weabos look so cringey when they try to immitate it.

Modern Disney is shit. Sure, they have bigger budgets and do more "complex" animations and facial expressions, but it usually falls flat and ends up looking grotesque and extremely exaggerated. They don't look like they're portraying emotions, but like they're acting. A lot of it also ends up right int he uncanny valley, particularly when they try to create an emotional scene.

That being said, anime has gone to shit and seems to recycle a handful of expressions. They were far more experimental back in the late 80s and 90s, and the characters were far more expressive.
