No need to make a thread if you only have a single question.

Don't know where to begin? That's understandable. You see, the first time you visit /ic/ you will see a stickied thread with a thumb tack and lock icon. That specific thread has links that will HELP you. Read that first.

For quick gestural stuff it's fine, but you should always work large. Beginners tend to try and hid mistakes in small drawings, and are afraid/leery of committing to larger pieces because you have to draw longer lines and more detail. They're also leery of owning the page, the blank space intimidates them.

If you're studying the head, and it's forms and details, you should be dedicating at least half of a standard page to each head. If you're involving things like noses, mouths, eyes, and ears, you need room to draw them accurately and fully, instead of hiding them in small pencil marks.

>> No.3315552

If the tool feels good for you, use it. There is no official size ruling on tablets. If it feels too small for you, it's too small, if not, it's not. If you haven't had a chance to try one out at all yet, start smaller and cheaper. Without experience fancier tools are useless, you could buy the biggest, most expensive tablet there is but you'd still start at the same place than with a small cheap one. You'll know if you want/need a bigger tablet after trying a cheaper one out, or might be happy with it and not need to invest more money.

>>3315679
Again, tools used are irrelevant, only thing that matters is the art you create, the "how" does not matter in any other way beside your own optimal workflow and comfort. Some artists might prefer working without a ruler, some use a ruler, some people don't use erasers, it doesn't matter. There is no "cheating" unless you literally steal art from others and call it your own. Do what feels right.

No. You will have to learn every applications quirks and then on top of that render systems.
>have it all in realtime and be physically accurate
Realtime stuff is going to be physically based but not accurate. Even in accurate renders you've still got to do a bit of tweaking (they'll get you far enough before having to do that). I would recommend Blender Cycles as it's not very difficult to pick up at all once you learn the basics. The principled BDSF will be a great start to learn the basics of PBR. There are material packs you can download, tutorials to watch. None of the 3D apps are easy for a layperson, you'll have to learn.

so is it even a good idea to use rendering software to study basics of light/material? relying on photos and what few real life options are available to me isn't cutting it i feel -- i want to be able to contrast materials relatively quickly, and I saw a clip of scott robertson using modo to do just that ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWKXqElmSVY ) but he did have to fudge the reflections a bit.

Now after some years off I decided to come back and with a different purpose, but still find my art heavily based on my emotions at the moment. My motive is to actually become more involved in the community besides just posting content and waiting for likes.

not quite hentai but i made fetish stuff on DA for a while and this worked-
Buskers sometimes plant their own money in their guitar cases so people feel more tempted to add to the cash, they feel more comfortable with it if there's already something there.

Anyway, you apply this to your online submissions by making porn or fetish art on your own and putting "COMMISSION" in the title, this means any post of yours that gets any traction also functions as an ad for the fact you're open for business.

>art on your own and putting "COMMISSION" in the title

Holy fuck dude. I genuinely feel like this is one of the most useful tips I ever got since I started drawing. That never went through my head cuz I hate lying and making up shit, but that might help a lot.
I mean I'm far from popular as I started pretty recently, and I did get requested sometimes, but yeah if I do that shit it might help. Thanks man.

>>3319829
So I have a massive problem with that. I dont enjoy doing the same shit over and over again.
I mean for example I like Adventure Time and feel like I could draw lewd of that cartoon, but I keep going to other series all the time. Draw a girl from Zelda, then draw one from Overwatch, then draw one from whatever else I feel like.
Same as fetish. Draw loli, then draw futa, then draw thicc milf, then draw trap, etc...
Maybe I should change that, I'm not sure.

>> No.3320124

>>3320116
Using Adventure Time as an example:

You don't really have to stick with it forever or even do it exclusively. As long as you market yourself as such and push out relevant content enough, you can establish yourself as "that artist that does those lewd adventure time pictures" even if you do some non-adventure time stuff as well. Once you have a following, you can do whatever you want.

Also, for fetishes, you can do lol/futa/thicc Adventure Time. Adventure Time is also decent because there's a lot of obscure princesses that probably have zero art at all.

>> No.3320129

>>3320124
>>3320116
Thinking of some examples now, Om is pretty much the go-to guy for Sayaka (Ape Escape) porn but he does lots of other stuff too.

oden is a semi-obscure artist that I became a fan of because of his insane amount of Medli fanart. He hasn't really drawn her lately but I still like his stuff.

Ikuta Takanon (Hinaprin) did a bunch of Spice and Wolf Doujinshi back in the day which made me a fan. She hasn't done any Horo since but I still follow her.

Very very few artists are truly exclusive to some particular fandom/fetish. You just want to be able to grab a particular group's attention to help you grow at first.

I actually put some thought into it before.
I tried to draw some Pokemon furries, but like I said I always end up drawing different stuff everytime.
Right now I'm working on my own hentai game and I'm gonna draw girls of all kinds for it, from furries to demons and whatever else.
I feel like if I focused in only one type of fetish I would do better but at the same time it could get boring for me and wouldnt be as fun.
Guess I will try to think hard on something that I enjoy enough to draw a lot of it just to have a title like "that guy who draws characters from this series".

Digital is actually really easy and intuitive once you learn the tools and it's not as far off from traditional as you might think. I recommend the starter tutorials by CtrlPaint too if you can find a way to get them. You can still use the books that people recommend, you'll actually have an easier time turning them into finished pieces by inking or painting over them down the road. Worry about lines, drawing, and edges now. Then when you feel ready move on to painting in value (grayscale) and eventually color.

So /ic/ I'm about to sign a ~20k contract for a comic project. I get no royalties because "my name doesn't sell yet" even though that's completely unrelated to copyrighting, but I'm fine with that since it's about 2 months of fairly easy work for a pretty big sum (profits will be of a million+ though.)

The thing that's quite strange to me is the fact that the contract states that if I ever decided to stop midway, for any reason, I would be liable to take on and reimburse all the financial loss this project might have generated in terms of spending.

Is that usual for a comic project, I've signed multiple contracts and this one is my first big one but it has me wondering, is this too big of a leash? Or is that just normal procedure and i'm not used to it yet?

well they're a pretty successful studio, and they guaranteed payment within 10 days of any turned over work. I'm using these pigment liners in pic related and I found that while I use them, the tip seems to get flattened/misshapen really easily, over only just a couple days, and then the ink doesn't really flow well anymore and I get scratchy lines, sometimes even no lines. I don't even press ridiculously hard or anything.

Is this normal? It this particular brand just soft? Any better alternatives?

So your question prompted me to do some quick research since I have also experienced those issues both with Microns and with Staedtler fineliners (I just bought myself a new set exactly like the one you posted).

I think the solution is simply to apply a lot less pressure. It's fine to go a bit harder *occasionally*, but if you push too hard on them all the time you'll end up busting the pens.

My scratchy lines would appear after running the pen over the same spot over and over again (grinding lines for Peter Han's course), but it was a much rare issue with regular drawing. I just tried and laid down a whole bunch of lines on the same spot for like 5 minutes, which was usually enough to give me issues, BUT with a much lighter hand: no ink flow problems whatsoever.

Also try holding the pen at a slight angle and not at a 90 degree angle to the paper, this will help making the nibs stay pointy longer.

All that said, most people seemed to agree that these pens will only last a few weeks or maybe a few months with constant use, so don't be too surprised if they die sooner than other pens.

When working with color (digital), how does it fir into your workflow?
Do you just sample it on the fly in the color picker (HSB or what?)
Do you have a preset collection of swatches that you regularly use, or do you construct a palette for each project individually?
Do you do any blending off canvas?

I'm at an impasse of sorts, and would greatly appreciate the help!

>> No.3327556

>>3327549

it all depends on the contrast of the composition , the lighting and the story behind it, if i want a spooky painting i wont use vibrant daylight colors, i will use a soopy combination with maybe darker shadows and some red and green contrast, if the background is desaturaded then my focal point is going to be saturaded duh

its really about your composition, the color is subjective, the thing you need to focus on the most is value and lighting and visual narrative, if you are clear on those aspects when you make the image the color comes easily

>> No.3327567

Oh, sorry. Maybe I wasn't clear...
I have no problems regarding color theory. I wanna know how it fits into your workflow: At what stage do you construct the palette? Do you make it using an old collection of regularly used swatches, or do you just pick colors as you go along? etc..

Thanks anyway!

i don´t need to stick to an specific pallette, just know what i am going after, the actual colors in the final art i get to after many edits but i always stick to the original plan i set in the thumnails.

When going over the grayscale values with color, do you use a particular blend mode, or do you just go normal?

>> No.3327601

>>3327585

depends, i use color, overlay and multiply modes depending to what i need.

If you simply add color layers it will look dull no matter how good the values are, so i may add an overlay layer to add some temperature to a midtone or multiply to darken the background with a complimentary color, sometimes i use screen mode for a bloom effect or to add extra highlights.

Those layers modes are usefull because you can play with opacity and also edit the adjustment layer to try different proportions or contrast with clipping masks for different parts of the image.

But no matter the combination of layers i use i usually end up adding a normal layer on top to do the final refinements and correct some of the aberrations or clipping that may occur. I usually leave the more saturated hues for the normal mode layer.

Of course, when i am doing studies i usually choose to do direct color and try not to use editing , that way i can have better control and learn to visualize what i want.

I asked in on of the only two threads talking about sculpting, but they seem completely dead, so I'll repost it here:

Hello, I'm interested in sculpting and was curious to know how to start.

A lot of my interest came out of seeing various hentai artists getting figures made of their characters and I always saw images of the progress that goes into making them.
I like porn, but I think most of my interest in sculpting would be more towards guro and maybe some sexually related ideas.

Anyways, I was curious on what are the necessary materials such as types of clay, tools, paints, etc. and how to obtain them.

I've gathered that I need something called Polymer clay, although I also saw something called super putty or something like that? Would Play-Doh be a good starting point? As for tools, I'm not sure if there are brands that I should look out for, but I was expecting to get them off eBay or something, although if there are stores that I can walk into to buy the materials, that would be much preferred, be it for the tools or the sculpting material.
As for paint, I saw something about acrylic? Are different colored clays a thing that would be necessary because I've seen a few instances where people do that, or is that a preference for making the painting process easier? I also watched videos where people use wires or what looks like aluminum foil inside the clay, is this for structure when sculpting?
Also, is utilizing the oven required or is that just for certain sculpting material?

As you can tell, I'm new when it comes to this type of stuff, art in general, and I guess I just don't want to jump right into this and be overwhelmed with expensive materials only tk end up failing and quit very early on, so any info and tips would be very welcomed, especially if it's just direct links to guides, videos, or something and don't want to bother giving me the time of day, I imagine it's annoying to explain stuff to newbies.

Thank you for your time.

Assuming you're not interesting in digital sculpture, I personally recommend something like Sargent Art Plastilina Modeling clay over playdough (PD) IF you are wanting to reuse it. PD will dryout and harden pretty easily. That's fine if that's what you want, but assuming you'd like to just have a few pounds of practice material, that modeling clay will remain pliable and soft no matter how long it sits out (just don't get it wet).

Starting out, some simple cheap wooden tool are fine. As you start to get more and more experience, you'll naturally start exploring more tool and the like. Just don't spend a lot till you've got some hours into it.

That's all I got.

>> No.3329146

I didn't consider this, having reusable clay may be helpful for a beginner like myself, I always thought that much of what I would work with would constantly dry up and I'd have to start from square one each time.
I don't mind that, but your option sounds more convenient for an beginner.
The only other concern I have is just the overall hardness of the clay as I'd like something that isn't too soft so I'd be able to get in every detail I wish without worry of my sculpture falling apart in the end, that and as I stated in my original post, i would also enjoy painting my works as well.
Needless to say, thank you so much.

yup, found em! thanks again anon. "Force" looks really interesting, like a how-to for gestures. at least that's the impression i got from leafing through it.

Hey guys. I have to write a piece about an artist that wants to teach people about the natural world and who's critiquing capitalistic society.

It'd be helpful if I knew some similar artists to compare him to, please.

learn how to edit them. there are texture materials that come with the program you can assign. i like the oil paint flat brush and some others i can't remember now because i've customized so much. i've downloaded some marker brushes that are like copics, copic palettes, flat, and a couple "measuring" brushes. the flat, marker, fude, and shige pen are fun. i color with a combination of custom brushes i've made from defaults in the program and the watercolor blending. just look up clip assets

how do you emulate traditional pigments like ultramarine blue or cadmium yellow when painting digitally? colorpicking from photos of swatches seems unreliable

Is there some kind of eldritch secret to drawing with one of these nib pen things? I have a speedball holder with a bunch of different nibs, speedball ink, and winsor and newton ink.

I cannot get the ink to flow consistently at all. I dip the pen in the ink, I can see that there is a blob of ink sitting in the nib, I go to make a line, and at most I'll get like a little bit to come out if any does. If I try to load the nib up more it all just runs out at once onto the paper.

I don't get it at all. I'm watching people do it on youtube, I'm copying exactly what they're doing, and I'm just not getting anything. I try different nibs, the same thing, I try angling the pen different ways, pressing down harder, nothing.

Should I be diluting my ink or something? I just don't understand why it won't flow down the nib when I try to make a line. It's either nothing, or it all comes out at once.

Can anyone help me or give me any direction on what I should study to improve my drawings? I've tried reading Loomis and another book that was suggested, and maybe I should go over it again, but I feel like I haven't learned that much from it. And I used to think I was better than I actually am, but now I'm pretty sure that I'm not as good...

Here's a recent drawing I did.

I tried asking /g/ but that didn't go anywhere. I'm looking for a simple lightweight program to open graphics in (diagrams, schematics, hueg photos) to make quick annotations with. I just want to import the graphic and slap a layer on it and scribble over it and be able to easily undo the annotations or scrap the layer entirely.

Does anyone have any recommendation on how to break down my time on learning how to draw?
I remember seeing a picture on here a while back where it showed what to learn and what to practice on every day.
for example
monday: hands 1 hour, 1 hour still life, etc.

I forgot to mention I have 4 hours pretty much everyday where I can learn and study.
I just want an efficient guide to follow from a better artist on how to manage my time.

Like for the next year ill have a lot of time on my hands and I want to Grind efficiently. Since after this year I probably wont be able to spend 4 -6 hours a day. ( or 10-12 on the weekends)

Does anyone else feel like they're running out of time? I turn 26 this year and I'm nowhere near as good as I should be, but this very fact alone makes me feel so stressed, I'm actually terrified of sitting down and drawing.
I'm just overwhelmed because there are so many things I'm bad at and I don't know where to start.

can anyone find proper pictures for head references? all google gives me are some shitty crilleytier dA guides
