>What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) remember to thank those who've redlined your work accurately. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.

Nice color choices and rendering but the head and neck are seriously misaligned. Either the head needs to be more to the right or the neck and shoulders more to the left. The neck should attach at the base of the skull, not the base of the jaw.

it's coming along. Need to clean up alot more and add a small amount of AO. Has anyone heard of the book "Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators"? seemed to help out with making stuff look less stiff; not to say mine looks natural/smooth but it certainly made me start thinking of lines differently.

>Rightmost character
Left forearm is Popeye-tier. Complete lack of a wrist leading into the hand bones. Shape of face below the nose is just a bulging curve and does not suggest a mouth, lips, or a jawline. Radius of curvature of breasts is too small for their placement, compared to the girl in the middle. Length of calf is too short compared to length of femur.
>middle
best of the lot personally, although FAS-tier thumb webbing. No visible evidence of left leg. Asscheek somehow larger than head.
>left
thigh thicker than body, which might be stylistic but looks really fucking weird to me. Right humerus appears to be going down and to the left when it should be headed towards us to connect with that elbow, rather than disappearing below it.

You clearly haven't studied perspective, construction, or natural dynamics. You couldn't even draw symmetric eyes in perspective.
The result is unappealing as fuck, and even your coloring is below average. (But no rendering can save a picture of such a flawed base.)

The feel I get from this picture—it's like she's composed from the parts of three different people: the lower body and left arm, the upper body, and the right arm with the head.

I don't understand the face crit though. Are you saying the eyes and nose are both at 3/4 but thats wrong or the eyes need to be spaced differently? The shoulders line up with your redline so are they still a problem?

>> No.3311680

Anyone got tips for drawing with thin lines? I'm trying to emulate manga art styles but I always end up clutching on thicker lines cause I can't get thin lines right when rendering.

>> No.3311682

>>3311680
resizing usually does that automatically

>> No.3311697

>>3311678
The shoulders are shown as they are positioned in the original. If you compare it with the look of her breasts and costume, as well as the position of her head, you ought to see that these either don't line up with the shoulders or are executed poorly.

About 3/4—I mean that there are two sections in both upper and lower eyelashes—where they go down and where they go up. The lengths of these sections do not correspond to each other. Based on the position of the nose in relation to the middle point between the eyes and other things, you might've been drawing the 5/8 or 3/4 angle. That means the horizontal length of the far eye and its sections gets correspondingly reduced in relation to the closer one.

To get the eyes right, you have two options.
a) First decide an angle and draw the face. The angle is important in calculating the size relation of paired elements, such as eyes, eyebrows, or even halves of the mouth. Draw one eye in the intended angle where it should be, then draw a rough draft of the other. Look if there is any asymmetry by mirroring the canvas and/or using a straight line from one opposite point such as corner of the eye to the other (the same corner of another eye). Then use a distance/size measuring tool to determine if you got the sizes of each section right. Fix accordingly.
b) (Mostly works for flat eyes, which is usually the case with animoo styles, or non-extreme angles where you can't clearly see the shape of the eye.) Draw a face in the desired perspective. Draw an eye in the full frontal view. Copy. Mirror. Position symmetrically. Merge both layers. Distort the resulting eye layer so that it fits the perspective of the face (you can draw a cube beforehand to make the task easier). Trace on another layer or use eraser and redraw any blurry lines. Profit.

For close-ups or humongous mugs, however, you'd also need to take considerable perspective distortions into account. But you needn't worry about that in your pic.

So you are saying that basically the face is in some places 5/8ths and some places 3/4? You mapped the corner of the left eye wrong and put your land mark further out than I had. Either way I appreciate the time you took to look over my work. I tried to really push the gesture with this one and even positioned a 3d model and redrew it. I get that the shoulders are too far apart essentially right, they should probably have been closer together. The remark that this was lazy is completely false and same goes for my not studying. I have been doing this for years and reading /working daily. This drawing took me several tries, so despite the fact that it isn't my best I reject your assumption that this was a lazy effort. Either way though I left this place because I was getting nothing insofar as feedback and frankly most of what is produced here is complete shit anyway as most of the people who are good have moved on. I am going to start contributing though, because I have hit a massive plateau with my work and haven'r really progressed much since last year. Not nearly as much as I had hoped for at least.

No, I am mainly saying that the eyes are really fucked up. Most of the face implies 3/4, but the size ratio of the eyes is 5/8, and the size of the sections does not match. The shoulders are tilted to the side as to imply the torso rotation, but the costume parts and breasts have visibly lesser tilt. If the yellow thing is a necktie, it doesn't look like it's affected by gravity.

>> I have been doing this for years and reading /working daily
Perhaps your approach isn't very effective then. I know a guy who claims that he has been grinding fundies (cubes) for 15 years, and honestly, even his perspective isn't that good. There is also a guy who supposedly has been drawing for 17 years straight—no practice, only theory—and while he's good enough to get commissions, he's far from being called a pro and he's currently in despair after finally realizing how much he sucks and that he has been stagnating the whole time. (He's actually on a firm intermediary level.)

IMO, constant practice is what counts. Textbooks are useful when you start and when you need to resolve an obstacle you can't seem to tackle by practicing or observing. But I wouldn't say you should absolutely trust my opinion.

Anyway, my point is that you might've spent a lot of effort, but it still looks "lazy." I know how it's like, and when I was told that, I knew immediately that it was indeed my being lazy.

How do you guys feel about analyzing and copying stuff from artists you like to improve? Do you think it's an useful thing to do or is it mainly a waste of time? Do you think it would be more useful to go for reallife references? if you do/did that, how do you proceed in order to squeeze the most out of other people's stuff?

Pic related and imgur link is stuff i've been copying in the last couple days from various artists i really like. Girl with the guitar is the only "original" sketch i did out of the bunch.

I see vertically asymmetric eyes. (Assuming that the mouth and eyebrows are lined up correctly rather than eyes, but with this angle it's indeed much more likely.) If you want to leave the far one like that, then we have to move it to the edge of the face, like shown on the pic, or the size ratio will be broken again. It is not a very good option since humans have their eyes enclosed in the sockets and the other eye is usually covered by the nose in such angles. I'd say it's better to change their form accordingly. But first you have to position them symmetrically. I'm not sure if you wanted to show that the far eye is open wider than the other. The distances between the eyelids and eyelashes don't differ too much. It depends on your intent. I've gone with the idea that they are open to the same extent.

P.S. You seem to make your eyes a little bit too wide for these faces, by the way.

I'm not either one of them, but I share their mindset. Mostly, as there are some pieces I abandoned halfway, and lately I've been feeling strangely unable to bring myself to color my pics. Probably because I've mostly been drawing black-and-white sketches for several months, although when I manage to get to coloring, I don't notice any setbacks.
In case you're still curious, I go by @Yklvr on twitter. Convenient for comparison, as the latest tweet currently is about my progress over 13 months for that "the first pic you ever drew digitally vs now" trend.

If you just started drawing on digital, you probably need a bit of time to get used to it.
Other than that, i know you said you had it configure right but, ded you check pen sensitivity?, as well as active area? either of those could help you out a bit if setted properly according to your needs.
The last thing i can think of is zooming, maybe you are trying to do the lines from too close (too zoomed in)?
If nothing else, i guess you could try a software with integrated line stabilizer, like SAI, but you should probably check the other things first

I've hidden under the safety net of, "generic cartoony-semi-realistic fashionable girl portrait looking off to the side at 3/4th angle" for an incredibly long time, so It's stunted my progression. The first thing you should do is check if the aspect ratio of your tablet is properly aligned with your monitor's. Go into the Wacom Tablet Properties > Mapping and make sure "Force Proportions" is checked.

Second thing is that most older versions of Photoshop don't have any stabilization, so that might be a factor.

Besides these, getting used to a tablet takes some time and feels extremely weird at first, but once you get the hang of it it'll come naturally and your lines should be better then.

Hi, I am looking for advice from more experienced artists like you.
I have never done anime style but I am going to make a drawing for a lady friend (her character from her dumb "oc do not steal" days), It is a cat girl with a spear.
Where can I get a good pose for it? I just don't want to copy a cool drawing and it end up being too similar, or is it common for manga artists to re use poses and therefore ok if someone recognizes?
Forgive my english and thanks in advance.

drawing anime is literally just drawing people with deformed weeb heads. naturally, if you can draw a person the only thing you need to work on is anime skull construction and facial details

quickposes has a variety of poses for you to look at and practice with, from there you can probably make one from imagination that interacts with a spear

It might be a bit of personal preference, but I think you're relying on airbrush too much. It results in a muddy indecisive rendering, so maybe block in the shadows with a harder more opaque brush and soften the edges afterwards, where the form turns softly.
Nice tits btw.

I heard tumblr likes flashy rendered stuff, not sure where the sweet spot is.

>>3309763
Talking about rendering, you approach the translucent skin as an opaque material. The overall local value is relatively dark and shadows are much more about a hue/saturation shift than a shift in value. Shifting the value too much makes skin look like vax.
Check out Incase, his art is a good example of how subtle skin rendering can be.

I won't talk about the drawing aspect much 'cause I don't have a redline to support it.

See I've tried a process similar to this but I always end up polishing it too much. I can't seem to just wing it when it comes to placing the flat color or any of the rendering. Thanks for showing this though, maybe I'll try it again.

Folds look very nice, although the shadows on her sleeve are extremely dark. The ambient light will be enough to give the shadows some lightness to it.

as bad as this is I unironically enjoy the concept and think it could actually be an interesting piece if the hands weren't symbols, the fur/horns were textured and built up properly, and if you actually had line weight rather than bolding everything with a sharpie

7/10 concept 3/10 execution, mostly due to a lack of understanding form
