I was on /v/ in a mecha game thread when some dude posted random art no one recognized. Turns out, he was the one who drew it.

He lived in Russia, wasn't famous our anything, but got by working on mobile games. From there everyone was asking him if they too could learn to draw and get there. Some guys posted their anime doodles lol, one guy posted decent Disgaea (is that how you spell it?) fanart.

I was just a staring out /beg/ at the time and I still remember him posting that the most important thing above anything else is to stay motivated. There's always going to be ups and downs but you can't focus on the negatives and get bogged down with those feelings.

In that thread I made a 1 sided promise to meet him at the world stage someday, but he said he wasn't interested and just wanted to draw mechs all day. If I meet him again, I'd like to say thanks.

I'm sure he already forgot about this, though.

Finished work is common sense. The anon who said that was directing that to /ic/s culture of "the grind" and never finishing anything whereas elsewhere people draw because they have ideas to share. /ic/ gets into drawing because they want to get into it for money/career, often times losing sight of their goals and bowing to the mercy of crabism.

Drawing actual pictures shouldn't be something forced. If so then you really don't like art in the first place.

That completely misses the point of it. Nope.

Put two artists in front of a canvas. One is skilled and has years of experience. The other is a mediocre uncreative pleb.

The skilled one get's the worst possible brush, half broken, rancid, dissolves further with each stroke. Pleb get's a fantastic brush, masterful craftsmanship and materials ensure it longevity, flows smoothly across the canvas.
Well, guess who will create a better painting, it's really no rocket science.

A tool cannot replace experience, knowledge and grinding. In the hands of a bad artist, a good tool only allows him to >polish a turd even faster<

Guys, if you are being shamed into picking up manlier hobbies
Don't blame drawing.
You got shit to sort out outside of drawing.
Then you come back. Don't let it get tangled up with your life.

I'm looking for advice

I started drawing a specific genre two years ago, I enjoy it a lot and have roughly 700 watchers from it even though I don't post often

My friend decided to also draw this genre after seeing how much money I was getting from it and within a year he had surpassed me in watchers even though he uploaded even less and just saw it as a means for money, He's now abandoned it to move on to his next trend but it's ruined my motivation and happiness just being so easily surpassed and thrown aside, now I get upset over how little attention my art gets compared to others and it has ruined me

Now you know how every artist feels as some hack fuck comes along and makes some commercial cashin that sucks in clueless normies

Sorry it happened with something you like anon, but I'd say the desire for exposure and fame (or infamy) is a toxic desire, even if it does net you lots of dopamine and an inflated ego.

One thing I've been trying to strive for in my art is not giving a fuck who enjoys it. I put it out online only as a digital record for myself and as a way of letting people know I'm not dead yet, I don't give a fuck if one of my works gets 100 likes or 1000, and if someone wants to buy it that's nice but I like to think I wouldn't give a fuck either way

Fuck normies and realise no matter how good you are, how creative or original or hardworking you are, someone will always come along and play you like a goddamned fiddle, but ascension is realising this tragic state of our field and letting go of your anger, bitterness, disappointment, disillusionment, cynicism, burned fingers, defeatism etc. Just do it for you and the people who like it are welcome to stay

He goes through topics in a way that's so hard for me to know if I truly understand them, or
if I should just keep doing his exercises. For instance, in the figure drawing book, he first suggests
that you practice positioning and perspective with a flat "2d" image of the figure in 3d space.

Do I actually keep doing that? How do I know when I'm able to move on?
