IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Ducky proportions aside, I can draw and shade forms by themselves but the second I apply these concepts to a figure it just looks flat as I can't detect terminators and core shadows IRL. probably for now just do the shadows as an even black and concentrate on the light part where there's a lot more tonal change, then when you think that's going well you can move on to the dark tones which are trickier.

There's plenty of people here that are beginners like you, they are either lurking or working. There are also people that hang around to help guide new artists through the convoluted journey of learning the fundamentals. By doing a lot of studies using his techniques. You either follow a fixed proportion (loomis) or do it a lot and get a feel for it, this is where OBSERVATION drawing comes in play.

That's why I always recommend /beg/s to work on drawing by observation for a month or two before jumping into construction (hampton/loomis) If you can't copy what you see you'll have a very hard time learning construction.

You don't need a Mac Pro for art. In fact, very few artists buy Mac Pros, they buy iMacs or Macbook Pros, at around $2k for the high end. Besides, a fully loaded Mac Pro is only around $5k - but complete overkill for 2D art.

And I don't know about anyone else, but my chair cost $300. I wouldn't even know where to find a $3000 leather chair.

My Cintiq did cost $2.5k tho. Worth every penny. (24HD)

Learning to draw can cost as much as a pencil and a notebook, anyway. Better tools are nice, but not necessary. Cintiqs are a luxury for professionals.

So stop trying to draw, paint instead. I've found that a tablet functions far more similar to a paint brush than a pen or pencil. If you are new to a tablet it is, in my opinion, more beneficial to come to a piece from a painterly perspective, rather than approaching from a sketching perspective. Only once you've built up a confidence and comfort with painting do you really have the necessary control to make clean effective line work. Of course this is by no means universal, however, if your having difficulties, then I recommend changing your approach.

Alright not him, but what if you're trying to reconstruct the face in the reference- BUT implying one can draw the reference to like 90% perfection, but can't draw it from imagination while using Loomis' studies? What then should this person be working on?

I'm beginning to cross lines with Loomis on face drawing like how >>3309774 posts, but not the actual face when it comes to the true grit of detail and structure. I've been doing the ball shit study on real-life photos of faces and it's been boggling my mind. I've come to the conclusion that like what anon said, it should just be used as a springboard. There's just a stark difference to real-life and textbook measuring from my studies. I believe I should just use his method of face drawing as a guideline while using references, but not an absolute method of true measurement.

Sure. When painting, you cant think in terms of lines, as you might when sketching. Rather you have to try to define form with just value and color. Here's a finished piece with the layers I used. If you notice, I never started with a sketch, rather I tried to block in the basic form with only the base color, and a bit of variation with value. After that I simply kept refining; adding more detail, still thinking about exactly what form each stroke was meant to define.

>talent is a lie
100% wrong pseud, talent isn't all that's necessary but this "everyone is capable of being good at any craft of they try hard enough" is pure retarded narrative authority creates to keep people complacent. The thing is the 'talent' most likely had to do with your ability to learn from things, there is a common misrepresentation of practice as just magically making you better, it doesn't, there are specific, definite things that happen that make you better you practice(if you do get better). You may, through trial and error, find it works best to get this certain kind of line you need to draw this specific thing by moving your hand in a different way than you used to. An easy example of this is handwritting, hand writing evolves through repeated, life long simplification and abstraction that makes a distinct style. But not everyone is as 'good' at this as others, think of people who just can't distinguish tones well, maybe to one person two distinct hand movements seem exactly the same, nature is not egalitarian, our brains are flawed. You don't have to learn how to move your arm, no one can break it down for you to figure, you just know how to.

So, my aunt asked me to design a wall painting for my 9-year old cousin, which should be zombie themed. They are then going to paint it by hand onto the cousin's wall.
I came up with this here, do you think this is alright?

Bullshit, it's knee high, also does that means I need a huge ass paper to draw something as small like that? Absolute stickman-tier beginner here. I always wanted to start drawing as a hobby, but never really put effort in it due to focusing on other stuff (and not having much focus in general because of ADHD). Last night I read the link in the sticky and tried to do the upside down Stravinsky drawing, while also ordering Drawing with the Right Side of the Brain on a whim. The book arrived earlier and I wanted to ask whether there's a suggested order for exercises or if I should just go in order from chapter one?

Sorry for the folded paper and the scratches, I didn't have any unused printer paper nor an eraser.

I can read Japanese. Not really. No real reason to use this over something more standard or just your own observation of the human torso.

His main point is that the torso is divided into three distinct sections and lines: the chest, what he calls the "motsu" (the middle part) and the "sara" which means plate but .I do not know if these are actual terms used for these things. I couldn't find "motsu" in the dictionary.

Two hours on that? Bloody hell.

First tip is to not spend so much time on it, what did you actually learn? Try drawing the object 10 times in 2-5 minute sessions to force yourself to focus on the major shapes instead to get a good eye for determining where shadows and colors fall, and their proportion/relation to each other.

Push the values (lightest and darkest points), and blend around them to smooth out the image. Look up Ctrl+Paint's guide on blending if you're stuck.

Sure, though if you post the ref then that would make critique easier.
First, the background is too busy and distracts from your subject.
Second, the lighting seems to be a bit ambiguous, if I had to guess I'd say it's an even frontal lighting, however your highlights don't make much sense. remember, each stroke musk help define a form, not simply be plastered on to of something which is already defined. The crab looks a bit flat, this mostly has to do with the poor rendering, but still remember to think of your subject as a 3D form. Finally there needs to be more contrast, as the difference between the value of your highlights and shadows is not enough.

I don't really know which things do you want to learn how to draw. If it's just anatomy at first, i would suggest just drawing for fun even if it doesn't look how you want to.

Try to learn a bit about the muscles and watch some tutorials about composition.

l got the supplies the book recommended
earlier and I tried the first exercise in it: a self portrait, a portrait from memory and a drawing of my hand in around 1h 30m. Apparently these will be needed to look back at when I'll have improved, according to the book.
This is the self portrait, the first drawing I've ever put effort in. Meh.

Tried drawing some apples. The shading fucked me. The top two apples were drawn by just trying to follow the contours, while the halved apple was drawn using a different method that I forgot the name of. First (You) will be the reference image.

your tracing isn't even correct, so if you start 'tracing' more accurately you will learn accurate placements and learn how faces work, and manipulate them knowledgably.

Thanks again!

Which guide is recommended to follow? Is there something else we should be looking at?

money isn't a huge factor, and I'm trying to move art from a hobby to a source of secondary income. It just seems like a bigger factor than it is because I had to wait for my tax return to get the tablet. I had about $350 saved up in cash, and it would have been more but I have direct deposit and I only withdraw actual cash every few weeks out of necessity and not out of desire, and the $350 is my leftover change I've accumulated. My tax return is just throw-away money so I'm gonna put the money together and upgrade while I have the opportunity.

I thought about going for the Surface Pro, but then I opted out of it because 1 I just couldn't afford it at the time (but admittedly I haven't looked in a while), and 2, I didn't want to pay for tech I already have. I don't want a smaller tablet that doubles as a regular computer, when I already have a sufficient computer. You know? I have a pretty beefy gaming rig but I haven't gamed on it since like last March. I don't want to pay extra for tech I already have and won't get the use out of. Meanwhile my current tablet isn't a screen tablet. On that same note, I had considered the iPad Pro & stylus but I already got CSP, my primary program, on my PC, and don't want to pay even more for it in the long run. I also don't really need the portability of the Surface Pro or the iPad.

I think I'm just gonna say fuck it and buy the Huion anyways. If it's a mistake then I'll deal with it. I'd rather have a lackluster screen tablet than a lackluster graphics tablet. Like I said, this money is throw-away money for the most part.

The thing is man, it depends on the artist. You can 'trace' (I'm assuming you're talking about studies) and learn. People who never improve are people who are in love with the process of working off a reference. You feel me? They don't want to improve, they don't see themselves whipping stuff up from their own imagination. They just love love LOOOOOVE looking at a ref, making some lines, looking back at the ref, making some lines, etc.

I truly truly hope this helps. You shouldn't banish perfectly good resources just because proko this or eceleb that. Be smart about it for fuck's sake....

How do you guys feel about analyzing and copying stuff from artists you like to improve? Do you think it's an useful thing to do or is it mainly a waste of time? Do you think it would be more useful to go for reallife references? if you do/did that, how do you proceed in order to squeeze the most out of other people's stuff?

Pic related and imgur link is stuff i've been copying in the last couple days from various artists i really like. Girl with the guitar is the only "original" sketch i did out of the bunch.

think its entirely beneficial to study artists you like and discover exactly why you like that artists drawings.

I do it all the time. I draw anime. I don't give a fuck. I think Japanese anime drawings are magical. So I drew them and studied the proportions, the most utilized perspectives, saw patterns, understood a LOT. Drawing is discovery!

Good sketches man.

though yeah you could have done much better with the chest of that bird leading down to its legs, a lot of values & tones missed. birds are actually really good for studying values and tones, so keep that up if that's what you want in drawing, unless this was just a random subject you wanted to draw for the sake of it

you got the general shape of the bird down at least, but even then there's still some stuff you can work on, like how the head of the bird is flatter than the one you drew, the grey mantle of the bird is much spacier in ref than what you depicted, etc.

I have that book, he is about as step by step as you could possibly get. The only way he could hold your hand more is if he walked into your house and actually held your hand. It's immensely helpful.

And yes you're also supposed to copy the drawings there, they're examples of what to do. Again there ARE step by step instructions.

This is 'Figure Drawing - Design and Invention', correct?
