Face expressions in drawings is key for making the viewer more engaging or so I believe. Right now my art is "dead", feels lifeless, and also I wanted to practice on expressions with basic characters to get a hang of it so does /ic/ have any GOOD tutorials laying around that would help anyone in this situation?

Because simply just shrinking or enlarging pupils isn't enough. There's also motion and gesture to take into consideration.

look at real people. No expression sheet or tutorial will ever help you as much as observation

Expressions aren't just eyes and mouth in different positions, it's body language, it's tilting your neck down when you are surprised, it's getting your head up when you are confident.
Work on that and you'll be golden.

Just don't use Disney cartoons as a reference for that, they're generic hacks lmao.

Nah, the correct aproach is: Don't use Disney animations, definetly use Disney concept art.

Eh, I mean yeah there's definitely valuable stuff in there, but I'd say to do so cautiously. Disney has it's own body language of sorts, and when you figure it out it becomes super easy to spot derivative work.

correcter advice: watch live action movies and use actors as reference

Read literally any good book by animators (Walt Stanchfield, Preston Blair, Richard Williams etc) and you'll quickly pick up why your pic seems very lifeless in spite of being pretty.

The different expressions in your pic are different emoticons swapped over the same outline of a face. A real expression engages much more of the face, and even the body.
