what do you think is a fair salary to start as a full time concept artist, especially when they aren't giving you a junior position? (intermediate)

Add inflation to these numbers guys. I would guesstimate adding 10%. Post is 8 years old.

I calculated and inflation was roughly 11, taken into account that income inflation doesn't keep up and the middle class is getting poorer, 7-8% is what my new guesstimate would be.

I wouldn't want to move to the west coast of USA and work with a bunch of soyboys for less than 80k a year plus health insurance and free lunch

Those salaries are quite a lot under today’s standards.

On average. Europe and America has similar entry levels, but America has higher ceiling. Asia has shit entry levels, but decent ceiling compared to living costs.

100 for just pencils and 75 for just inks would be fucking fantastic. People that are actively published by companies by boom receive less.

How can I live and make art without being a parasite off loved ones.

Well, definitely don't regret going into engineering over art. Also I still have a full passion for art that didn't get killed by trying too hard to 'make it'.

Funnily enough, engineers that aren't art illiterates can be quite sought after in some fields.

Was concept artist making 60k in europe. Now self employed illustrator making 30k. I'm infinitely happier. Holy shit was that gig stressful and the work environment toxic. Never again.

But I think if you find the right company it's gotta be pretty sweet.

And yet I see writers all the time who ask for an artist to draw at least 8 pages, inked and colored for $100 because they "have a budget"

I really hate when clients want to pay so little. It's because they think good artists work quickly, so time isn't money for them.
Except even if a good painting took a short period of time to make, it still shouldn't be charged for so little.

Most likely you will be a junior or have a junior level salary. Positions are labeled at higher levels to attract bolder artists and avoid bottom tier artists. Same with roles that has requirement of "2-5 years in the industry" despite being entrance level positions.

>>3301600
Salaries doesn't seem completely off. Major companies take MB students with internships/freelance experience at a higher rate than the entrance levels, whereas smaller companies may even push those numbers down.

The senior levels are definitely higher today than back then.

I worked in EU and Asia, so I am thinking USA is higher on average with high ceiling and that gaps between same title workers may be quite large. EU has lower starting points and lower ceiling, but better safety. Asia has shit level starting point but can scale to American level for the higher level positions.

Mechanical engineering or material sciences if you work in collaboration with artists, like designer teams. Home appliances are a good example of this.

For example if you have to work on a vaccum cleaner and the design team has something cool looking in mind, being able to know what part of their design is important and what part can be modified and in what way can be quite useful. Generally a good part of these skills are acquired through learning composition, colour theory and so on. Home appliances use composition rules to 'tell' you how to use them.
