I've placed the vehicle now, and it makes me lose my groove. I like having a loose style, but as soon as I plonk something down that's obviously affected by perspective (usually cube like in shape) I need to find vanishing points and slowly, as I have to align everything to strict perspective, the whole piece loses it's spark... Anyone else know the feel?

Anyway, trying to loosen it up again, I decided to change the atmospheric thickness, time of day, and direction of light.

Any thoughts or help in general would be very appreciated.

Hello again! Here's my 2 cents.

I feel like your piece is a single image in a story board of images. Like there was an establishing shot. A shot from the cockpit of the vehicle. This shot. And then they arrive in the destination in the next shot (or something). If that's the case the composition works great.

If you want this to be a single good image in your portfolio I'd change these things.

- Your car is leading us out of the image. I come in from the top left I see the car, I look left. I'm done. I don't think that's what you want. A simple flip of the image might help but I'd go even further. Have the car come in from the left and mushroom crap is facing him like it's a spooky antagonist. Block our eyes from rolling from the page by blocking it.

- I'd place the camera somewhere. It gives the image a bigger sense of mystery and a different feeling all together if you have some foreground crap to place us into the bush. Maybe you could have mushroomy stuff but you get my point.

- I think it'd be a cool idea to incorporate that car headlight into the lighting so we see what the drivers see. This may sound like some voodoo bullshit but I think it'd help the image read as more intense.

- I tried to make all your shapes go light against dark/dark against light/light against dark etc.

I totally understand if this isn't the story you're trying to tell with the image but I did my best. Your image definitely has a better sense of speed if that's what you're going for.

Hope this helped.

> I think it'd be a cool idea to incorporate that car headlight
I'm experimenting with different lighting conditions, and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go with overcast and misty, for a diffused lighting. So that night time shot was just an idea.

I'm don't want it to go full spooky and dramatic. I want it to be a bitter matter-of-fact but still have a somewhat unnerving atmosphere.

Pic related is quite close to what I'm going for. So there's still gonna be enough room for me to place some interesting lighting in there, headlights and whatnot.

>Hope this helped.

I gotta say, you pointing out the fact that I was leading the viewer off the canvas was the best tip I've gotten so far. It forced me to knock the whole thing down, and rearrange the pieces. I even managed to turn it into a vertical composition, which I always want to do while making environments (horizontal comps can be so bland).

The left side is empty at the moment, but there will be a happy little researcher dawn by the geothermal pool, and some looming features in the distance.

I also need to keep an eye on the balance between the left and right midground (not counting the big shrooms), it's a bit too even for my liking as it stands now.

i would recommend that you avoid shading for now and do some basic line drawings. the lines you're using to shade are random and not confidently placed. you need to /think/ about where you are putting each line. in her eyebrows the lines should depict the direction hair is growing, but its mostly random. around her jaw and neck you are randomly hatching as well and it detracts from the whole piece. it would look better with nothing there at all. focus on making confident lines, no feathered strokes. i also can't tell 100% but it looks like you smudged your graphite around on the jaw/chin and her hand. don't do that. its lazy and looks bad.

>> No.3295711

>>3295704
yeah its no problem, craftsmanship is something i struggled with too (im a generally messy person lol) but you can practice it by being conscious of how you are touching your piece. some people wear gloves, or you can just work the piece away from where your hand rests. (if right handed working from left to right when rendering).

>> No.3295719

>>3295532
i dont think it looks scratchy. /most/ of your lines look intentionally placed and they compliment the form and really flesh our your figure. there are a fewm mainly in the hair and around the bottom right look sloppy and could be fixed. hat might be a bit too low as it doesnt really look like he has much of a head. also the composition is a bit wonky around his beard, there is a lot of empty space there, and it has an awkward tangent with his hand.

It feels like you're painting your forms on the fly instead of drawing them first. Establish the face of the man before painting it, once you draw it and it's fine with you, then you can paint. woman's face is alright, but fix the guy.
I also feel like you should contrast it a bit more than it is now.

Okay so I just think you should be more brave with the lighting. I don't have time to do that shit but just move it to either side and this'll be more interesting.

I can see you have some solid painting skills but please don't EVER do a 100% front view. It just fucking kills every ounce of personality or interest you might have had with the character.

Fixed some other stuff too. I don't know if he's supposed to be a joke character but his chin was too small. Eyes were too far appart and hairline was unappealing (it can be high but it was still unappealing). Hope this helped.

I only had the original Gorka uniform as a reference for color, but strangely enough I didn't really follow it, I just made random wavy shapes and it gave me that mushy and shiny uniform texture that I really digged, and it was very easy to do as well, probably took 5 mins all in all. Just wave, smudge, wave smudge and repeat.

WIP.

So, as you can probably notice the lineart is a tad uneven, with the bottom being a little thicker than the top. I am getting back into drawing after a long time away (few years) and have only been doing digital for a couple months. So I mainly blame this on my inexperience with a tablet and pressure sensitivity.

Question is, does it look really noticeable or distracting? I feel like it looks a little better zoomed out. Maybe I'm just overthinking it or being too much of a perfectionist?

Any other comments or critiques? Thanks!

might not be the exact right place but here's what I'm working on.

Stick welding is messy so the final piece would be bright and shiny, not smudgy and grey. The main thing is I'm just not sure how I want the finished piece to look. Whether it should be pressed flat against the wall or protruding out slightly. Whether I should mount it on a plaque or have be pure steel (if it was on a plaque it'd look like a hunting trophy which really isn't what I'm going for.) Whether I should have it be just the bust or if I should add a wing pressed against the wall (might look cluttered but would be much easier to figure out hanging.)

Your figures are very stiff and have no sense of weight or movement. Have you studied gesture? Act out the customer's pose if you need to and you'll see for yourself how unnatural it is. Be very conscious of hip and shoulder angle.

Your perspective and sense of arrangement in space is poor. This picture looks like it's being viewed through some kind of wide angle lens or something.

Value scale is poor and washed out, which is an almost universal beginner/novice error. Blackest blacks whitest whites my man.

Forgot to add. Can't decide between him with these legs, or the ones above. One one hand I like the design with just one pair of buckles as I think it keeps his design sleek and not overly complicated. However on the other hand, I feel like his design with multiple buckles helps add to the character's sadomasochistic traits and the fact that he's constantly trying to hold himself together.

Hard to say without the ref but I think you could make your shapes more appealing to sell the composition and perpective. It's a bit flat at the moment. Look at Edgar Payne's work; he uses a lot of directional shapes0. The river could be more pronounced in it's serpent like flow into the distance for instance. It's also hard to tell if it's supposed to be a waterfall or just a receeding flat river in bad perspective. It wouldn't hurt to be more mindful of the planes in everything and give them direction with your brush strokes.

I know that because I interact with those type of people. People that make shitty drawn zines but get praise from every artsy person because it is so "original" and "thought provoking". I'm probably too dumb to see what others see in that type of work.

I know a lot of people like that. I'm often invited to see art exhibits, from art students and professional artists. More often than not the stuff I see display is the most random non nonsensical stuff imaginable.
I remember going to a exhibition of a close friend. The art pieces were just paintings of anuses, different types, different colors with different volumes of pubic hair.

Honest to god I don't get it but I see people all around me praising it. I'm probably not seeing what they are seeing, Maybe I'm not as in touch with art as others are I don't know.

Regarding that drawing, there isn't a big story there. I enjoy drawing moments, drawing things with a little context but nothing more. Sometimes I draw stuff similar to >>3297207. Almost promotional art with my own original characters.

Only small progress on the main piece so far, but I thought I'd pop in at the end of this thread for a lil update.

My focus atm is the lower left quad where the main point of interest will be. Gonna have a researcher kneeling down, inspecting the pool i think.

The far back is still in limbo though, I'm gonna have to come up with something soon.

Their hips are non existent and that makes their arms too long and their legs too short. The flying girl specially has a huge upper body and the scale and position of her legs makes it look like she has polio.

They are all off balance, leaning forward. That tree stump there propping up the sword is a really solid telling that you need to plan the poses before actually committing them to the page. I mean, is that really the pose you had in your head? The girl dangling the sword on top of a thing in the ground uncomfortably far from her?

Lastly, the pigeon toed girl. The pose isn't cute. The way she is standing on the ball of her feet, her hips protruding backwards, it looks like she wants to pee. But then with the limp wristed combo she turns into a marionette.

So, pay better attention to proportions in anatomy, look for lots of reference on poses and hands. A good trick for hands is to use your own as reference, it's really easy to grab stuff and capture what it looks like.

I'm too lazy to draw for a longer period so I just do sketches.

People who praise anus artwork and other similarly worthless disgusting pieces are seriously just trying to signal to everyone else that they enjoy something that most people wouldn't enjoy (even though they don't enjoy it themselves). There's not a single person on this planet who actually enjoys anus art. I can guarantee you that.

Damn, getting some really good vibes from this. The legs/feet make me think of mega man X stuff, but the torso and head make me think of something else. Either way, nice values and cool design.

Thanks for the comment. I tried to capture movement like a moment of impact with her left leg, or like a pivot. A moment in quick movement. May still be an impossible pose, now that you mention it because it looks slanty it kind of looks like it's begging for a wall or bar for her to lean on or something, so I might just change the idea from movement to a still pose that way. I'd have to change her hair then though. Might just throw some quick color on it and move on.

Would appreciate any other thoughts.

Thanks bros.

I don't have the patience to explain anything in text that other's have already pointed out, so here's a half-assed gif to illustrate your problems. It's by no means a fix, you'll have to look into it yourself.

You have problem concerning basic stuff. Most notably the proportions of the human body, and simple knowledge about the joints (what they are and are not able to do).

This knowledge is easily obtainable through a search engine or your local library, and don't forget to stop by the sticky.

I actually saved your first WIP image and started painting over it for fun because I liked it. I think it's looking good, I like the value structure in the foreground, but I don't think the placement of the vehicle is helping (all large shapes on the right).
also I liked the faint building-like structures you had in the beginning >>3290904
and I agree with this anon >>3295309
that this could be an establishing shot for a more intimate composition
