I really hope that all of this is for real. Seeing the world take my art, turn it into every medium possible, and run with it would be really really cool.

Like, it would mean they are really connecting with it. I never thought my art had any kind of mass appeal to it but watching blade runner 2049 where they use pretty much every aspect of it makes me think it might. Seriously, individual people are becoming more famous just because they resemble my art.

How did this shit ever happen. When the fuck is anyone going to say anything to me? Why keep me in the dark? It makes no god damn sense.

Way too long considering my skill level (or lack of). I've been drawing for almost 12 years now, on and off. Don't be like me. Never stop drawing. Push out of your comfort zone. I remember going to /ic/ in 2012 and saving all kinds of infographics, tutorials and asking for what books to read. Every new year I make the resolution to start drawing only to do nothing. It's so strange. What's so hard about picking up a pencil and drawing for a few hours every day? I keep thinking how if I started then and kept it up I could have been good by now. But now I will have to start from 0. And I already so old... it's embarassing. Others my age achieved mastery by now.

Since I was a around 5, I remember when I was asked by a teacher what I wanted to be when I grew up and I said an artist. Of course over time I drew, but never seriously till around 16 when I started watching FZD and eventually got hooked. I'm 22 now, but I messed around a lot since 16, I drew more but not enough to be a modern great which I regret as my skill is still mid tier, but hey I got plenty of time left and as of now I'm drawing daily and learning my fundies in a more structured way.

Over 15 years at varying levels of intensity and with quite a few breaks, the longest being almost 2 years.
I had some brief spurts where I was hyper motivated (but lacked maturity and mostly squandered it), but it wasn't until 2016 that I began to take art seriously as I figured it was the only thing I cared enough about to bother getting good at.

It's embarrassing to admit I've been at it for so long and have so little to show for it but I figure it might be inspiring to some people.

Embarrassing? There's nothing embarrassing about persisting to draw despite having slow improvements. You are an inspiration anon, keep it up and we're all going to make it.

As for me, I'm about to be on my 4th year of on-and-off drawing this May. I'm hoping 2018 will be the year gains.

Thanks! Usually these days I am doing a lot of studies from photos since I learn so much by doing them.

It boils down to:
1) REFERENCE - Find a good reference photo. For my last 2017 piece, Winter Road, I found this beautiful picture of a place in Switzerland. https://i.imgur.com/s8bYFU7.jpg

2) UNDERPAINTING - Start from medium dark background. Paint big shapes first. For the color I use warm earth tones just like traditional oil painters do.

3) COLOR - Add a new layer for the color. I keep the warm underpainting layer separate.
In this step I try to paint as Richard Schmid says: "paint what you physically see whether you understand it or not". If you see a tree as a blob of abstract green color without branches, don't zoom in 100% and paint the branches. Leave it. This step is the hardest for me since I often over-define and have to go back and simplify all the time.

That's it. Usually studies take 10 hours or sometimes more over 3-4 days. I often do daily 1-2 hours sketches too, but I don't publish them online that often.
But I pretty much paint every day.

< Steps from "Winter Road" painting.
