if you're using a pencil printer paper is fine. if you're using ink a heavy weight paper would be better. sketchbook paper is just useful cause it's bound.

and by ink I mean like not just a pen literal ink in large quantities

use printer paper for your sketches. buying sketchbooks for daily sketches etc is such a waste of money. you can save so much money just by buying printer paper and butterfly clips

Printer paper is good for starting out, great for doing the timed gestures since it's pretty easy to go through five or more pages in 30mins. The problem with only using printer paper is how graphite smudges over time on them when your stack of drawings get moved around, this doesn't happen with a good sketchbook. Another note is the texture of the paper can add to your drawing. I started out with printer paper and moved onto sketchbook eventually. A lot of artists also use newsprint paper if you're looking for something cheap and with a large surface.

Graphite smudges no matter what kind of paper you use.

If you wish to preserve graphite drawings you need to apply a fixitive, or frame/laminate the picture but who can be arsed?

keep a stack of printer paper and some mechanical pencils for sketching.
The worst thing you can do as an artist is get attached to your own work or art supplies.
Suddenly you'll find yourself afraid of ruining the pages or "what if I draw something shitty and ruin my perfect sketchbook" or some such faggotry.

I get over that by doing a few pages of smudges. Clean and refill my pens on a page or something. Then it's "ruined" so I don't have to worry about bad work going in there.

>being this poor
I don't make a lot, but damn. How broke can you be?

Also - your idea doesn't work nearly as well for toned paper sketchbooks.

Just steal Archie’s. All you do is shove them down the front of your paints as far as you can and put your shirt over it. Loss prevention doesn’t give a f at art stores as long as you’re not stealing too much.

They do but smudging isn't nearly as bad in a half decent sketch book than it is on printer paper.

Printer paper is usually made from a mixture of cheap pulp and recycled paper that's been bleached. It's generally pretty acidic, which means it will yellow and get brittle very quickly. Sketch paper tends to use better materials (unless it's a cheap sketchbook), and the surface is usually geared for graphite and paints, while printer paper is designed to take toner, or ink. Printer paper is also much thinner, so it's not good for any wet media.
Printer paper is good for sketches you'll throw out, or doodling, or if you can't afford more (I get it for free at work, I always have a ream of it around, especially 11x17) but for more finished work, you should use sketch paper, of a decent manufacturer.

Pretty much this.

I use printer paper when I'm on a tight budget because it's pretty easy to honestly just ASK for some at any job with a printer, sometimes even the library will let you take a few sheets so it's a good item for the poorest of artists.

Walmart sells decent sketchbooks for $5 though so if you can afford that, it's better for sketching than the printer paper especially if you want to save some sketches.
