basically a combination of the sticky and the beginner's recommended books in the artbook thread. beyond that it was just studies of stuff i liked. i started out with portraits and trying to get rid of symbol drawing, and then i moved onto to gesture and i've been kinda stuck on drawing a figure from imagination since then. i think the general procedure to follow is:

get rid of symbol drawing -> do observational drawing and learn basic perspective -> develop line quality -> gesture and more perspective -> learn anatomy to add onto your gestures -> design

also throw in studies of artists you like somewhere in there.

2011 - I was 14 at the time and got a tablet for my birthday. I loved art and drew a LOT that year, literally did not spend my free time doing anything else. I also participated in the dA community a lot, which I still miss to this day despite its oddities.

2012 - Life started to get shitty, I ended up drawing a lot less. Made like 6 finished works that year.

2013 - Downhill from here. These are the "finished" paintings I made. I started to seriously doubt my place in art and had a hard time getting motivated to draw. I did get into studying fundamentals pretty rigorously at the time to keep me going.

2014 - Started college that year in a STEM major, only picked up a pencil to draw like 5 times that year, and only had 1 finished drawing to show. Figured why bother doing art if it's a waste of time.

2015 - Mostly did sketches, dropped out of college because I could not find any enjoyment in school. I was raised to solely pursue STEM, so I didn't think there were other options in life than to get a degree and slave away towards a future I saw no fulfillment in.

2016 - Probably the lowest point in my life. I did a couple sketches on post-it notes but that's it.

2017 - Meds, therapy, a new outlook in life. For the majority of the year up until October, I was solely drawing in my sketchbook because my tablet was broken. Then I said "fuck it" and started to paint with my mouse, because I loved working with colors. It was slow and excrutiating, but I was more than happy to be able to find a newfound love for art. Went from having zero direction in life to thinking of making a career out of doing what I love, as cheesy as that sounds. Also furries.

2018 - Finally decided I should get a tablet, so I spoiled myself with a Huion KAMVAS. I still have so much catching up to do, but I'm more than grateful for getting to this point. May this year bring the same level of happiness as the last.

nah i barely touch gestures now and i switch it up a lot. i still do hours of studies though but now i'm trying to move to more imaginative stuff.

sometimes i'll do photo studies for hours, and that's fine. other days will be just pure books with nothing else. I still try to draw a lot though. I think that routine is probably fine for a beginner, but it's pretty dry!

Your anime art is way better than your furry art, also your furry oc is inconsistent and is unattractive. Sorry but if I wanna see furry art then I want to find at least some things that are attractive because I find them attractive in humans.
I want to see abs, a manly face or muscles, for females I want to see nice tits and an hoursglass shaped body as well as anime eyes on top.
Your oc is just, well it looks like a submissive, fat male. Which is like, as unattractive as it gets for most peoples taste.
This kind of fattish physic isnt the bad part but that he additionally looks small and and sensitive is just so, uggh. Additionally rendering furries is probably more challenging than skin.

Just some food for thoughts, and dont take it too harsh because I kinda feel you probably associate with your oc on some level. I like your anime art, except maybe the one which you commented with lol, thats a really weird one.

You do bring up a good point. I guess I was just so focused on making the 'furry' party right that I forgot about what makes a drawing appealing. I'm actually looking into using more muscular forms so I can stop making shapeless blobs. Also I don't mind criticisms about my OCs at all, he's honestly just a blank slate at this point and any input is greatly appreciated. FYI, there's two different fat furry characters I mainly draw if that's what you mean by inconsistent; it's not the same character (the tanuki isn't even an OC of mine).

My very first piece from 2017 and my very last one. I did a doodle a day, at the minimum, for the entire year. Finally got my ass in gear and started learning instead of parroting in the Summer. I want to be a mangaka or illustrate for comic books at Udon because many English-speaking artists I look up to work there.
