Thanks, anon. If by leaned you mean not entirely vertical, than it's possible this is due to the camera, I can't scan them at the moment so this tends to happen, even though I try to make the picture as perpendicular to the surface as possible.

Yeah, I actually did that on purpose, because the drawings are relatively small (about the size of the palm of my hand), I tend to fall into symbol drawing, so I got a little upset and made them bigger so I can get all the shapes the way I want, symbol drawing continues to be the bane of my existence.

so i've struggled with this a fair amount, and here's my take on the issue of losing depth/energy during the "final pass" stage of artwork:
It's like you have two different brain modes going on. The sketch brain is creative, pulling something out of nothing. it's inventing as it goes. The second mode is a more robotic way of thinking. The finishing brain is trying to work with what's already there and refine. It's not being inventive, it's just following a guideline and often is focused mostly on consistency. Your sketch will have life to it because you were being creative while you made it, you were adapting in the moment and the raw energy is there. Because of a lesser emphasis on perfection, a lot of the drawing tends to be implied. Often times, when "finishing" a drawing, all of the drawing's details are spelled out in so much detail that the impressionistic quality is lost, this quality is the 'energy' you're talking about.

The way I've learned to keep that special je ne sais quoi about a work in the final image is this:

keep your sketch very basic, purposely ignore details and worry about major gestures/poses/shapes. That way, when you go over it a second time, your mind will still be "inventing" as you trace, preserving that sketchy energy but in your finished work.

TL;DR: don't just trace your own work, make sure the process of making the finished image is a creative process, not a mechanical one.

Good point (and post) anon, thanks.
When you put it that way, it makes sense.

I was watching some episode of ManBen the other day, and i noticed how many of the artists in it have incredibly loose sketches, and improvise a lot with the G-Pen, in the inking phase.
This is probably most due to time constraints, but i think it may help in the way you pointed out, as well.

Incidentally, that comes much easier to me on paper, than on digital (well, pretty much everything does, after years, i still can't get used to the tablet, the way i am with a pencil on paper :/).
Partly because drawing on glass sucks ass, partly because of the tendency to zoom in (i try not to do this, though).

>> No.3277940
File: 246 KB, 1000x846, cosmo2.jpg [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google]
3277940

Tried "inking" it again, this time being a bit more loose, and just trying to imagine the way i'd do it, if i was using a physical pen/ink, how i'd do it on paper, essentially.
Forcing myself not to zoom in, and no variation in pen size (for thicker lines i just go over them again, basically).

I think it looks better, though i'm not quite there yet.
However i think at this point it could also be that what's missing is less theoretical, and more just being able to place a thick or thin line correctly, or discern and control values better; in other words -- practice.

Next i'll try to take the pencils still, and "paint" over them directly, see where that leads.

Any further advice is much appreciated.

It's funny how a person can admit ignorance and show stupidity while still trying to condescend. It's not "putting numbers" on vehicles you fucking dolt, you'd have to project some of your own total lack of common sense on to me to think I'm saying that. It's simply the number 5, it's a trademark of his.

Keep in mind my making you aware of this will ultimately be to your benefit. If you were to put together a design portfolio of vehicles with 5's on them you'd look like a complete Robertson wannabe without even knowing much about who he is. Wouldn't want that would we? So be grateful I've given you this largess of knowledge~

>> No.3278137

>>3277940
In my opinion, it is better, I only do traditional so I can't really help you with the technical stuff, I will point out, however, that some of the lines do look scratchy and it takes away from the image. This isn't such a problem with traditional media, due to it being imperfect from the start, digital media is "clean" by default, which makes the scratchy lines look out of place. By this I mean that traditional media, pencil for instance is 3 dimensional, the tip of the pencil contacts the paper with more that one surface, depending on angle and pressure and thus obscures the scratchy look by having the secondary surfaces smooth out the line, this doesn't happen in digital, unless with specific brushes I'd assume.

One more thing, as far as line weights go, I think you and I share the same problem, varying lines add depth, and you definitely seem to have a solid grasp of which lines need to be thicker (objects closer to you, sharp angles etc.,) but the issue I have is that when I focus on details from the drawing, they look fine, but when I look at it as a whole image, it starts looking flat again. I don't know how to put this the best way, but think of it as micro-variations (variations in the knee, calf) and micro-variations (the image as a whole) they need to have different ranges of line-weight, so when you look at the whole image, the legs (closer to us, need to have proportionally heavier weights than the torso (farther from us).

For instance, if we put line-weights on a relative scale (1 to 10), we'll see that in your image, you use a limited range, for instance 3 for thin, up to 7 for thick, and these don't vary across the image. The line on the shoulder (far and thin) is about the same as the one on the shin (close to us, sharp line). This is fine when you see those parts individually, but in the big picture they lose their effect. Try using lines from 3 to 6 on the torso, and from 7 to 10 on the legs. Hope this isn't too complicated.

Yeah, i get what you mean, you didn't even need to explain it that thoroughly, as it's something i've been wrestling with since forever (i doubt it'll ever end).
My thing is, i feel very comfortable when working traditionally (doesn't mean i'm good, but just as a feeling) and when i draw digitally, it feels like i'm losing 40% of that comfort and confidence.
Of course, however, there is just no realistic way to do stuff traditionally in this day and age (not only because of the convenience of flipping, moving, stretching, erasing endlessly, on digital, but also because of materials' costs etc) so i just have to soldier through.

I'll say though, it's not just me being bad, when i look at even renowned professionals (from Kentaro Miura to American comicbook artists) when they transition to digital inking, the quality always goes down, unless they change their style significantly.
I think off the top of my head, Sara Pichelli is the only one that seems to emulate trad. inking uncannily well, not sure how she does it.

Anyhow, the eternal dilemma (beyond the line weight argument you make, which is mostly solved by just endless practice i think) is: If you draw digital, you should select a style that looks appealing digitally.
The problem is i like the result and feeling of drawing traditionally, but am essentially forced to draw digitally.
The result is an "endless" quest for a style that both looks good, and feels fun/rewarding for me to use.
-
Also thanks for the compliments.
I've stayed years off of drawing for general life assblasting, and only in the last few months started getting serious at it again, feels good in that sense (first few weeks were brutal).

There isn't really one tutorial I could point to or anything, I'm really into spaceship designs from the star wars prequels, Halo (specifically the Covenant vehicles), and designs by Feng Zhu, Jake Parker, Myazaki, and Niklas Jenson. I also worked on an isometric turn-based strategy game for like a year, which made the whole iso drawing angle a lot easier. I like it when ships kind of look like toys, versus the more straight-faced kinda stuff you might see in Eve Online or Star Trek. And bubble domes. Lots and lots of bubble domes.

This >>3277940 Anon here.

Figured i'd post some doodles i did (yesterday) evening at lunch (as a general warm up, time wasting).

My sketching is incredibly messy and non-aesthetic, which is why, even though i have dozens and dozens of these slips of papers with drawings on them, i never show anybody.
But i figure this would be a better place, since they don't stick around forever, anyway.

And since Yesterday i couldn't post, i actually did a couple more during dinner.

BTW all these are from imagination, in case it wasn't obvious, as i'm shit at drawing from reference (something i have to fix).

Again, sorry for the horrible pic quality and that.

The hatching on the hair (figure on the right) could have a better flow, but otherwise i really like this.
It has a nice, fluid energy and feels confident but light.
That right ear (his right, our left) is especially nice -- the other ear looks a bit flat tho.

I also really like the shading on the seat, but i don't love the cross hatching you did on that hood's drop shadow (figures on the left), feels too heavy.

They're characters i'm designing for (hopefully) a (web) comic i'm planning with my brother.
Thing is, i'm really terrible and (especially) intimidated from life drawing.
Or i should say, portrait-style life drawing (i'm fine, and enjoy gesture and quick real life sketches).

-
Since you liked the short haired girl's ones (i was trying, in that page, to find these characters' designs, reason for the check marks, lol).
This is a digital sketch i did this morning of her, closer to the final design (i'll probably make that dead eye more obvious).

Not super versed in this more painterly style, i usually rely on line art, so i'm trying to get the hang of that, too.

yeah i like the lineart much more. i'm not a big fan of digital in general. i use digital in my comics, but mostly for coloring or applying dot patterns in b/w.
are you still working on the webcomic, or is there something online already? there's some cool characters in the sketches!

I actually have to start working on it.
So far i only have pieces of the story (enough to start though) and various concept arts about the world and general look/designs.
Problem is finding the time to actually do it.
The dream would be to eventually get enough of a following for it to be self sustaining, but the odds are slim, lol.
-
Anyway, another day, another quick lunch sketch.
Eventually i'll connect a scanner and all.

More sketches about said characters.

So far I like your drawings of your characters, would be interested to see them in action.

Yeah, it started months ago as a shorter horror story set in 1600 Italy, with supernatural elements (basically hunting the devil and shit), then it went into the back burner for a bit, i had written most of it, but didn't have time to make it.
It was supposed to be very gritty with action sequences feeling heavy and exhausting.

So then we reworked it into something a bit more dark fantasy, larger scope, mixed in elements of WW1's warfare, pushed the horror further (i'm a fan of body horror, too).
most of the characters carried over, and the 1600 aesthetic is very much still in place, just mixed with other things.

Pic related is a concept sketch my brother made, to give you an idea of what i'm talking about.

Designs for a character for a sci-fi rpg I'm making, it's the character I play as, I usually draw her like top right, but I'm tring to learn how to draw more realistic, think like Moebius. Any pointers? Am I getting close with the middle and down row?

Hey, thanks man, hope this isn't too late and you'll see it.

To be honest, I started drawing when I was a kid (like most people I guess), but I was never satisfied with my work and always wanted to get better, didn't have a whole lot of friends, so me and my brother drew all day every day, this stopped when we started art high school (painting direction), when it became a chore. Afterwards I just drew the bare minimum for school and that was that until I dropped out of art college (painting again) after the first year due to missed deadlines and me thinking its a waste of time and effort to fix things.

As far as the drawing itself is concerned, I had classes with a very old school artist in my country (In Eastern Europe) who retired at the end of the 4th year, he was very strict, to the point of being an absolute dickhead, we were scared of him at the beginning but in the end we figured he only wanted the best from us and really liked the old guy. This is important because he was taught in the old Soviet/Russian style, with very strict anatomy/perspective study regiments which he tried to instill in us, which, as is evident by my work, we didn't fully appreciate. He stressed anatomy and line drawing (not contour drawing), he insisted on 80% line drawings well into the third year, limited shading, wanted us to learn to present form and depth using only the most basic elements, something which I'm still trying to figure out.

I dropped out of college 4 years ago and I'm only now starting to get back into things.

Yeah, but they are still a bit wonky, and it's an easy ref, looking straight ahead.
