no problem with arm movement, the artist just wanted to draw something that in the century he tries to mimix was fashionable. He obviously failed to realized what it is about but still.

Bending over is probably not a problem either, there were sevaral examples of similar armour

Running won't be a problem either

Helmet again is something that during that time was common but the artist failed to realize how those actually worked, and drawn a bastard child instead of a copy.

Hands weren't armoured that much in this period so no problem with that.

tl;dr the reason this sucks is because the artist had just enough idea about what he is doing to go into uncanny valley

Also: the knee protection is bullshit.in this form

I can't believe you are defending that shit, while at the same time posting proper armor. You truly, my friend, must be blind.

Look at the guy on the left, the straps on his shoulders are like 5 cm wide, while the original goes from his neck to over his shoulders. He won't even be able to beck his neck to dodge a head blow or rise his arms to defend that same blow. His single form of defense is moving aside, but in case you don't know, conquistadors relied on dense formations, that means no space for left, right or back. And bending over? you can forget about it too. The proper armor has an inside arch at the waist level, where the body bends over. Because it's an inside arch there is some space between the body and the armor (except the waist part) those allowing some joint movement inside the armor. Our ''spectacular armor''? has only an imitation, and even if it was a proper arch, because it's lower, sitting on the hips, it would even make running bad. Unless you call running like a `50 movie robot proper running then yeah. Hands? Those guys have gambeson, while mister fantasy puffy pillows, just look at that texture. And speaking of texture, did this just just fought a jedie? Look at that long line on his left ''belt'', nothing would do that to a metal plate unless a few hundreds or even more celsius grades or acid. There is the thickness too. And I am not even going to speak about that hat.

His knee parts are actually good

That guy should stick to his fashion design, because I bet my left nut that's his background.

Overall, if you want to make a armor smith laugh, just show him that pic.

>Look at the guy on the left, the straps on his shoulders are like 5 cm wide, while the original goes from his neck to over his shoulders.
What the guy is missing is a gorget, not wider straps. You are thinking of early 17th armours.

>and even if it was a proper arch, because it's lower, sitting on the hips, it would even make running bad
it's not on the hips. Look at the codpiece and the elbows. It's roughly the right height, obviously not perfect but you can see the guy who made it tried and failed. And that's what I'm talking about it's not a complete pile of shit, it's a failed shit that could have been good.
If you really want to complain about something then do it about those abortions of tassets he has at the sides.
Also nobody is wearing gambeson neither on the original pic nor on the one I posted.
These armors doesn't even require heavy padding.

>His knee parts are actually good
doesn't existed in this form, and will be uncomfortable as fuck, will move away from position after 10 meters of walking.

>> No.3269258

you are making it sound like has some small flows but which don't make the armor completely unusable. I would rather go naked in battle than trust my life on that.

>What the guy is missing is a gorget, not wider straps. You are thinking of early 17th armours.
I don't care how they are called, the upper things which connect the front and the back of the armor are too wide and limit the range of movement in both neck and shoulders

what you posted covers more and it's more mobile too. The straps are thin, and the shoulder plates are exactly that, plateS, meaning more than one, which allow movement between each another, and is not one thick piece of metal going from one side to the other

>will move away from position after 10 meters of walking.
we don't know how firm or lose those straps are, had there been just one strap the thing might have jiggle, but that's not the case

>will be uncomfortable as fuck
we see nothing which might prove that point, had the straps go round the back of the knee or something then yeah. Neighter do we know how well padded is or not

>doesn't existed in this form
that's the most close to reality part from that armor

if you take something and keep all it's characteristic elements but drop all functionality you are not making an case of uncanny valley, you are making a clown

>I don't care how they are called, the upper things which connect the front and the back of the armor are too wide and limit the range of movement in both neck and shoulders
you should care because that's what you described, but obviously there were several version of it. And as I said he clearly needs one.
Also agreed that the drawings shoulders were shit.

about the kneepad: even modern ones have these problems with rubber bands and various other methods of straping. One piece of metal and two straps won't make it better. I've seen people try to make stuff like these for larps, cosplays, even for HEMA and SCA.
tl;dr version is, if you need knee protection it needs to be attached to something to be comfortably sit there, preferably some other leg armour piece

>draw a line, it's at the forearm level when it should be elbow
yes it's not in the perfect place. That's what I said. It's not on the hips but neither at the end of the ribcage. Inbetween that is less then ideal but more than completely wrong.

>> No.3269306

>>3269285
>that's what you described
I am not that good with name of armor pieces, I google gorget and that's not what I was referring to. While he is in big need of neck protection, and while there must be cases of gorgets connecting to armor around them, what I was talking was not of what he doesn't have at whole, but of what he has too much, too wider ''shoulder straps''

the kneecap is not directly on skin, if the cloth offers some padding and the straps are firm enough, I don't see why 2 straps are not enough. You are free to prove me wrong.

>Inbetween that is less then ideal but more than completely wrong
fair enough

here is a very simple gorget, and also kind of early one as far as gorgets were used.
Mainly protects the neck and immediate surroundings from front and back.
But later it went further down to protect the upper half of the breast overlapping with the breastplate, and also went further out to the sholuders so you can attach to this the shoulders and arms instead of an arming doublet, and even later the shoulders were integrated to the gorget, sometimes even with upper arm protection too. Also sometimes breastplates had integrated gorgets not separate part.
Then around then the 17th century it went out of style and the neck and shoulders started to left bare apart from the cloths or maybe a buff coat or something similar.

About the kneeprotection the problem that it has weight, even more than plastic ones. And that will drag it down, and yes even through clothing and padding. As long as your knees are bent it's okay, but if you are standing or just slow walking it will start to move out of place. You ould tighten the straps of course but that also makes it uncomfortable to your leg...

because those armours were black.

Here is the fun fact: most armour had colors. But some retard like Sir Walter Scott from the 18th century decided that knights must be in shining armour. He and a lot of other people who also worked at museums scrubbed the fuck out of the armours so they were all shiny and everything.
They scrubbed off paint, gold, silver and various other stuff.

Yes, the 13th century was the 1200's.
>he has just as much padding underneath it as it was needed and used.
Do you have any sources to back that up? Because from my research there is nothing conclusive about the "right" amount to wear underneath. My thoughts thus far are that it was of differential thickness but it's overall pattern was similar to their dailywear tunics.

Yep, it's true.
Well, most of the time it wasn't painted, but depends on the time period and place. Paint was mostly used on helmets as far as I know and in a few exception at other parts too, but breastplate and most of the armours were either got with some method gold and/or silver (and sometimes copper but that's entirely different) layer. Then there was the heat treating process, which could get you very fancy colors if you knew what to do. That basically gives a few microns thick layer which is pretty easy to scrub off.

But here is an example of a helmet after decades of museum care

Oh yeah and I forgot the method when they simply burned something on it or used acid.
Acid was mostly used to etch pictures or writing into the armor but in some rare cases it was used to "color" it to some degree.

But burning linseed oil on an armour gave it a nice black/bluish color which also gave a protective layer from rust, but more importantly was fashionable and cool during some time.
The heat treating method I mentioned above also gave a protective layer, but that was way thinner and more expnesive so it was used for really high end stuff. burning oil on it was usually for the lower grade stuff, but not excusively

now, obviously wasn't ALL armour colorful. That's far from the case. There were a shitload of plain armour and just as many shining ones that were polished to some degree, sometimes mirror polished.
It's just there were a shitload of colorful ones too.

Also sometimes armours lost some of their colors simply because half a millennia went by. On this pic is gearge clifford's armour, or to be more precise, one of it's armour sets. and I also have to mention that sometimes various fabrics were used to cover armour, or even leather. In some cases this was practical because it hold together the little pieces like with jack of plates or coat of plates or to some degree brigantines and a bunch of more
