Are my ideas just not that interesting? How do I keep people engaged with a story?

This is something everyone deals with, and there's no easy fix, if it were that easy, everyone would be rich artists. You just have to keep going, and hope that you build a better audience. Over time your skills will improve, hopefully, and draw more people in. It's not something you can cheat or buy or force. You can try different marketing techniques to reach a bigger pool of people, but content is content, and bringing in the eyeballs is something even the top people struggle with at times.

Looking for any advice regarding designing proportions for less human-shaped biped characters &, especially, constructing poses for bipedal digitigrades and the like.
I guess I could say working out poses is something I struggle with in general, as well. Sitting, shots that don't show the legs and anything else that doesn't involve having to actually ground a character (certain action poses, floating in a void) is all easy but the moment you introduce a floor they've gotta stand on I start fucking up.

Finally built a PC and got Win10 license on it.

Just set up my Intuos4 and installed Krita and GIMP 2.8 and every time I lift my pen and start a new line there's some input lag, giving me this flat bit at the start of every line. It also feels pretty annoying having the cursor drag for some milliseconds at the start of every line. I don't think I can get used to this, nor do I think I should. I can't go around cleaning the first centimeter of every single line I draw.

Any idea what causes this? Any experience on similar issues? I already had a terrible fight turning off a bunch of tablet features on this piece of shit system and most of it's gone but it appears some lag still remains.

You need visibility. Draw people in with something. Shock value or something trendy, sex sells and so do popular culture references.

Work on making a good and interesting first chapter, then upload it somewhere. /a/, /co/, /i/? Maybe a couple of chapters, depends on page count. Finish it off with a cliffhanger. Include in something to draw people in. Cute girls, edgy setting, whatever to sell out. A trashy comic/illustration or two will bring people to your better stuff, especially if you can combine trashiness and selling out with whatever you enjoy.

A good way to build your name is to have art site accounts for fan art, people are far more interested in drawings of their waifu than good art or design in general. Draw fan art on whatever you like and sneak in some of your own designs to lure like-minded people in. Collaborate and communicate with other people online. Try to make friends. I told myself I wouldn't use a tablet until I feel worth of getting one. Reason being is that I had developed so many bad habits with my old tablet that I was actually going backwards with my art progression.

So for a yearish I only did pencil+paper, and then I got a bit desperate and did digital art with a mouse (tablet was broken). Despite taking forever to draw, I was actually progressing at a satisfactory rate and was making works I was actually somewhat happy with. After 3 months of this I decided I was ready to go back to using a tablet and got a screen tablet, figuring I had finally let go of the old habits.

And then I tried using the tablet. All my old habits instantly rushed back in, no matter how long I spent trying to figure out how to get my brush to do what I want, it's like it was going against everything my mind wanted. I figured it was due to lack of mileage but I got used to the tablet's mechanisms pretty quickly, so then I tried playing around with brush settings, brush packs, etc. but they didn't solve anything. I nearly had a nervous breakdown because I was so looking forward to making the next step in my art journey, only to be kicked back down by stupidity.

What the heck was I doing differently with my mouse than I was with a tablet? It's like the pen just didn't cooperate with me, but I really wanted to get comfortable with using a tablet because I'm tired of spending 3x the time using a mouse. Is it just some oversight with my brushes? Is it all in my head? This is giving me mad anxiety.

Pic unrelated.

how are you holding the stylus? sometimes i find I'm death gripping it for hours, leading to stiff drawings and feeling frustrated. better to be very loose when you can, and stay zoomed in enough that you're using a good chunk of the tablet area

brushes can definitely make a difference too. when I found a good pencil brush that could let me be very light and precise I started enjoying drawing digitally a lot more. same for painting when I discovered hard round + low flow

also just play around for a while, don't have high expectations. I'm sure you didn't have high hopes for your mouse drawings, so when they looked good you got extra excited

I hold my stylus like a pencil, if that's what you mean. I'll keep looking into brushes but I know that if I can paint with a hard square brush using a mouse, then I should be able to do the same with a tablet. Speaking of which, I see what you mean by the last sentence, but I'm actually just bad at drawing with a tablet, period. It feels like I'm drawing with my left hand or something, and it's felt that way even back when I would use my old tablet. Is there some tablet tutorial out there or something? Am I just autistic?

>>3267286
I know it sounds stupid but I'm actually kinda recuperating from drawing. Legitimately trying to control my breathing and clearing my head because I was just so shook by how awful it felt using the tablet. I'll go back to pencil for a bit I guess.

Speaking purely from a habit perspective, daily might be better in order to maintain consistency, which is arguably most important.

Really it probably depends on the person. If you draw for 2 hours, do you get better results in the first hour or the second? That should probably determine whether it's best to do an hour a day or 2 every other. Same rule applies to 4 daily, 8 every other, etc.

>> No.3267327

>>3267307
Daily is better, skill isn't even built unless you put in a certain amount of time daily. It also depends on what you're doing and a million other things, but daily for as long as it's comfortable to do so, one day a week off sounds good. Rest and time to synthesize information is also important. Anon above me also raises some good points.

Good paper. It's really up to you, and the kind of work you want to do, and what's best for the painting. You can choose rough texture, or smooth. You can use lighter weight (thinner) for smaller work, and practice, because it's cheaper. You use heavier weights, like 300lb, of for large paintings and paintings with large washes, so it won't buckle.
Just make sure it's 100% rag/linen, or a high percentage, and for final work, acid free. The cheaper stuff has a lot of wood pulp in it, and you'll fight it more than the good stuff.
I recommend for a beginner a decent sized block of paper, the kind that's gummed along the edges into one block, it's easier to work with and can be cheaper. Arches is a good brand, there are many good to excellent brands.

They're normal colored pencils. The color is unique, though, it's not produced anywhere else as a specific lead color, and they're generally a harder colored lead, because they were used to make notes and crop marks and such for the printer. The ones I ran across over the years differed pretty much, from soft to harder. The history of them goes back to when line art was photographed with a copy camera, and special films were used on the camera, where the blue didn't show up. You had to use a specific color of blue, or it wouldn't work - there were all kinds of stories of shopping lists and notes and things on art that made it past the editors and got printed, because the designer used what they thought was the right blue, or used the wrong film. The filters aren't used with scanners, because that blue is light enough that if you adjust the values in a scan so anything below 50% after converting to greyscale is changed to white (the blue in greyscale is a light grey), or clear out the blue channel in Photoshop, you're doing the same thing. From what I remember, it's about a 30% cyan, in CMYK.

Whenever I use the wireless receiver with my Huion Giano, some programs hang until it's taken out for some reason. Namely HWMonitor, Window's disk partition tool, and adding torrents to Qbittorrent (I think it's because they all access connected USBs, one of which is the receiver?). No anon I don't mean sensitivity, it has nothing to do with sensitivity. Your monitor has a resolution and so does your tablet. If the resolutions aren't the same proportion then any curved line your draw will be skewed.

I have a wacom, you need to google how to force proportions for a huion if they aren't already.

>the bamboo looks to big for my desk
I don't even have a desk, I draw in bed with it to the side. Dunno how to help there but they come in two sizes. The eraser is more of a gimmick honestly. The best thing about it is that you can draw with that end and unlike the nibs you never have to replace it.

>>3272939
ArtStation, Blogspot, or setting up a neocities. Also don't forget the expression "you need money to make money". If you want the "the most professional option" you get a website hosting of your own, which for an online portfolio only a few clients will want to see amounts to very cheap monthly fees.

I already did matched the proportion, I even used rules and draw a circle with coins to test the proportion.
If I draw really slow I can easily make a circle or curve, but if start to add more pressure or speed the surface is too slippery to maintain a stable stroke.
I tried to draw on my lap but it really uncomfortable because its the USB wire and its really small, like a 7 inch tablet small.
I like the eraser idea because this Huion 420 tablet doesn't have an express keys on the pad, so I relied on my keyboard every time I want to erase or undo.

Well, this is pretty much my mistake for buying a $15 tablet.

Oh, that's just the general term used for blocking in colors/shading/whatnot. Megaman's simple shapes and lighting scheme makes him one of the easier ones, whereas Dr. Wily has multiple light sources and more complex shapes.

Anyone here doing commissions, do you suggest different commission sheets for different styles of your art (furry or human, horror or cute, sfw or porn, etc.) or do you just link to your portfolio?

Suggestions on where to post commission sheets? (On 4chan or in general)

Specifically, I draw/paint digitally (characters or backgrounds) and do traditional inking/tattoo designs. I specialize in cartoon, semi-realistic and horror styles. My current commission sheet shows 3 pieces of art, with other options in text.

Flexibility. Their brains don't have a bunch of information absorbed already, so it's much easier for them to handle everything that comes with learning to draw. Not to mention, of course, that they have a lot more time to burn. Combined with the difficulty of overcoming muscle memory and it's no wonder you see very few actual artists who started later in life.

>> No.3278341

This is from personal experience so it might harm more than help you, but I personally haven't benefitted enough from commission sheets. What's worked for me (and this depends on your spare time and patience) has been going on websites where people are already looking for someone to commission, then message those people. There's some subreddits, deviantart groups, etcetera where people go and ask for something, usually stating their budget, then people link them to their portfolios or message them with some pictures. Hell, I got my first big commission on fucking FurAffinity of all places, where I went looking to sell my soul to some furfag for money, but instead I found a thread of someone looking for a very decent non-furry non-porn videogame painting and of all the people that replied I happened to fill the bill with my skills, and he was offering quite a lot of money for it. If you have a big audience and not much time, commission sheets will probably work wonders for you, and as for where to post them I'll bring up subreddit and deviantart groups again, just google and you should find many of them. Since you make tattoos, the commission sheets might work for you, post them there and definitely go for different sheets, of the many people that look past it, some of them mighT commission you. If you're willing to hunt the people down instead and talk to them, that will guarantee that you get the job way more often than not.
Again, that's just me, if you get anything significant out of this: post your sheets on subreddits and deviantart groups. Instagram and tumblr too, maybe, I haven't tried them.

Not that it's any less messy but if you have the staedtler one the metal cap part comes off and the hole on top is an on-the-go sharpener. Just give it a quick blow to keep it clean.

Otherwise my sharpener is the same as pictured and I've noticed that it does occasionally spew graphite out if I drop it. Shoving a small wad something like tissue or toilet paper solves that problem as long as I'm not shaking it like a maraca. You can also put it in a zip lock baggy and simply hold the sharpener while it's still in the bag and just shove your pencil in through the opening.

You take videos of of different movement sequences, mash them together without any sense of momentum and then you trace it.

Tablet problems can be quite frustrating. If it doesn't work after restarting your computer you may have to uninstall and reinstall the tablet driver

having the weirdest issue with my wacom tablet.

any button i press on my tablet activates the alt key, which then remains pressed until i press alt on the keyboard. after that, the button on the tablet set to the alt key no longer works. the fuck is going on?

tried remapping the buttons, tried reinstalling several different drivers, even tried reinstalling windows. this all started with >>3280661
, at which point the alt key button worked fine. any suggestions welcome.

Ill bite.

In the video he's using the one called hard round brush.
However it's not the same as photoshop's default hard round brush, that's where your problem lies probably.

Download the brush pack from ctrl paint and you'll see his hard round actually has both opacity and flow modifiers from pen pressure (pic related).

Odds are spacing is down too low as well, since all the "mystical flow setting that does magic & nobody knows what it's really doing! :O" is doing is layering every individual brush stencil over the other until it hits the max opacity % for the stroke.

I'm struggling with studies, because there's a problem I don't think many videos/text tutorials cover. What happens when you can't see an error and make it worse by "correcting" it?

You can see my study and notice how things spiraled out of control, if i feel the arm is too thicc, how can I know I will make it worse by making it thinner because it turns out i should have slanted it instead? I hope I'm making sense here. I feel like a grid would create a bad habit.

It wasn't responding even with the slightest touch
>>3280956
I was using his brushes, but your pic at least gave me a direction: there were exclamation signs on Control: Pen pressure, so photoshop wasn't detecting it. Rebooting and reinstalling drivers didn't help, a combination of answers from several threads on the internet (partially) did the trick. Now every once in a while it stops detecting again but at least restarting the service through the third party tablet-tool fixes it.

God I hate Windows 10

Win 10 tablet driver, aka windows ink, is utter trash but there's a relatively easy fix.

Go to
C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2018\Adobe Photoshop 2018 Settings\
And create a simple text file called PSUserConfig.txt with this line in it
UseSystemStylus 0

Then disable windows ink in the wacom panel and restart photoshop.

This solved 99% of the tablet issues for me.

>>3281301
That's one of the solutions I applied, since Alt+Right Click (change brush size) wasn't working on it. I'm a little afraid to disable Windows ink since when I do so the tablet behaves erratically on photoshop and I got it working after 10+ hours, but I'm still gonna give it a shot
Thanks!

Well, it worked, thanks again since this solves another issue(I had visual effects disabled but for whatever reason I STILL had them, so every time I right-clicked/click-and-hold the shitty circles appeared)

Just to complete the answer, I had to not only restart photoshop but also restore its preferences; this is done pressing shift+ctrl+alt while opening the program

Time to actually draw.

/beg/ here. Yesterday I started the "drawing with the right side of the brain" exercises. Like the book says, its pretty hard to tell.
Your brain doesn't notice the exact time it happens, but it can recognize the change in some way after it happens.

It's different for everyone, but look for subtle indications like the muting of the chatter in your head.
Talking to yourself when you think is a left brain heavy process and indicates clear dominance.

For me it often gets replaced by humming to the melody of the music I'm listening to.
The process of putting the sounds of different instruments together to create a unified whole stimulates the same part of the brain that's responsible for visual imagery, just pick something without vocals and you're good to go.

don't worry about it my dude(tte). so long as you learn something, it's a good study.

although if i may offer some advice, i think you are rendering little details too early, like the candelabra and shaded skull. focus on blocking in the planes of the face, the overall values. use a larger brush, and paint mostly zoomed out at first so you can see the whole canvas. maybe desaturate the image you're studying from.
this might also help your before problem, if the foundations are solid you would have less to patch over.
