If by mediocre you mean better than porn on /co/ tier, then two years. Minimum. Then you could probably get a paying gig doing illustrations you don't want to because that's what jobs are.

>> No.3263159

Yes, but it requires reading text on it for at least an hour a day along with about 5-6 hours a day of practice along with it. NO OT just practice things you already like to draw...this is where most people get into a rut. If most people on 4chan spent the time drawing that they do shitposting they'd be excellent at it pretty quickly.

Also, draw with a pen (even a bic pen is fine) and on a large surface. You'll be excellent at drawing if you approach learning it this way.

Francis Bacon was unbelievably mediocre, until he had his break through. The same with Jackson Pollock. As for other professions, I don't remember the top accountants that blitzed it in a year but if I went through a paper's register and obituaries I'd find somebody that turned it around that quickly. Please don't bother me again with this topic.

Not true. Did this for a year*. I improved a lot, but I'm still mediocre at best.
I'm moderately intelligent and a fast learner, but I didn't even scratch the surface of what it takes to become an expert.

My estimation would be at least half a decade of dedicated practice, unless you're some kind of savant or genius.

People here underestimate the time it takes to get good massively. You can't compress milage and experience. The information alone isn't enough to get good in a year, even if you already have a basic knowledge.

*of course not in your proposed schedule, but close. Ranging from 12+ hours a day when I was a NEET to 2-4 hours when I started working fulltime.

Then what does it take to become an expert? How would a savant or genius do it? If people underestimate the time it takes to get good, then what is the right estimate? Why can't you compress mileage and experience? Why isn't information alone enough?

Yeah, and Frazetta learned Bridgman in a night and just drew everything from memory without ever studying it.

Either you misinterpreted him, or he's a lying cunt, just look at his sketchbook vids. The first one was done in the course of a year according to him.

Not that anon but in my experience, they were very willing to sit with me and show me what I was doing wrong and how to fix it / what to study and even gave recommendations for books when it was too much subject matter to cover in the time they had to talk to me.

It depends on the teacher and how much they care about actually teaching their students.

If everyone was better than you, then that means even people who can't draw are better than you and that makes no sense. You can not improve slower than someone else because you are you and only you can improve yourself. Luckily for you, art can be a career.

These are cherrypicked examples of progress of 1 year of 16 hours a day with professional guidance meant to sell the program to you.
Basically the worst shit they scribbled out in the course of the year and the best thing they produced while there.
Presumably these are noob gains from /beg/s or semi-/beg/s.

http://fzdschool.com/advanced
These are the result of the previous 1 year program + 8 months at the school.

These people are driven enough to go to fucking Singapore and invest probably $100k+ to work 16 hours a day learning this shit.

Would you call these guys "elite"?

A regular art academy is what, four years?
And you need to pass an admission test and have a portfolio of classical studies to enrol.
Those don't really shit out masters, either.

The volume of things you need to internalise to produce "elite" (which I'm assuming is extremely impressive but not quite master-level top 15% of art or something along those lines) is MASSIVE.
