His overpainted photographs are often overlooked in favor of his earlier work, but what I like about em is how similar they are to what contemporary glitch artists have been doing: abstracting the image by way of deliberate regression. In glitch art circles we often hear about how certain methods output images with almost a painterly-like quality, from pixelsorting to style transfers. That contrast in different mediums as well as the blurring distinctions between them, is something that I've always struggled replicating (namely the intersection of drawn and glitch), but has interested me nonetheless.

In glitch art circles we often hear about how certain methods output images with almost a painterly-like quality, from pixelsorting to style transfers. That contrast in different mediums as well as the blurring distinctions between them, is something that I've always struggled to replicate (namely the intersection of drawn and glitch, pic related), but has interested me nonetheless. For Gerhard it's the contrast/blurring between paint and photograph, and although I'm not much a painter, the aberrations he puts onto photographs are very similar.

He basically creates new images by destroying old ones; not in like, a cut-em-up, found-material or collage sort of way but by putting them through a series of processes that one just wouldn't normally do. Like >>3256586 inferred, replicating photographic effects (such as motion blur) through paints and oil is what he's most known for, but where he went from that by the time the 90s rolled around is what really interested me, mainly because a couple of my colleagues compared my glitch stuff to his work.
