Let's have a master paintings thread. Good ones to do studies from. Preferably high resolution.

I wasn't sure if this was satire at first or not since I never heard of him, then I looked him up and was confused cause all of the praise with the OKAY paintings.

If you're in London go and judge for yourself, he just closed in NY

Doig did have something about him ten years or more ago, now it feels like treading water for the money (which is a enviable position but ... his painting is now < good)

Ya these are much better, I feel like, and I know it's funny to say but he suffers from contemporary syndrome. The syndrome where you're a talented skilled artist but you're in the 21st century so your ideas and talent gets watered down.

That's just my opinion, Some of these have a classic feel to them like munch and others from that time.

If he's to survive into the next century then he could do with a heavy edit and bit of scandal but I expect that will happen naturally.

Late impressionism / symbolism - Hockney - Doig

It's possible to create a manufactured place in art history for him. Hockney / Bacon - Doig also, the influence can be invented. A lot of other British artists are totally screwed but fuck them, they had the money. I'm more interested in the ones I do not know that didn't as there must be some good art out there.

Then she consumed too much mead, and slid the whole lot off her shoulders.

Awesome! Who is the painter of OP pic?

Peter Doig is amazing and his interviews are just as inspiring.
He once said: "There's no hurry to finish a painting, unless it has to go out of the door." I find this approach pretty stress relieving.
