How would you paint someone wearing black at night? I'm trying paint someone's patronus while they're wearing black robes and a black collared shirt. If is light in the background, then the patronus won't stick out. If its dark in the background, the robe will blend into the background too much.

>> No.3240094

its about lighting. if there is only ambient light(moonlight) then the robe will blend in(unless you make a silhouette around the light, so adding another light source might help it pop out more

This is not the actual reference for the painting (I had to find a generic one of the breed as this dog has long since passed away and I don’t have any good refs of him) so I tried to make changes to match it better. Obviously this is a dumb thing to do because I’m altering the reference/possibly messing up my forms/values, but you’re right – The likeness is really important. Ideally I can finish this over the next 2 days assuming printing places are busier than normal. I know I have to darken up the face/around the nose, but is there anything else I should change to make it look more similar?

>spend literally the whole year not having much time to draw because of university, thinking of how valuable time is and all the awesome stuff I'll draw once I'm on vacation
>plan to spend all day erryday building a portfolio for artstation, getting popular on instagram, grinding my skills and getting bitches and money
>oh boy I sure love art, can't wait for summer to start so I can post art like crazy
And now it's finally summer (in my country), I'm finally on vacation, and... I can't bring myself to do jack fucking shit. I either stare at the screen, sketch for 5 minutes then ctrl+Z the whole thing, or limit myself to downloading and testing brushes like in pic related. All the time in the world and no ideas or motivation whatsoever. I don't even remember what I wanted to draw once I had the time. What do you guys do to get out of this and start making and posting stuff you like? is there like a list of things to draw so I can mindlessly follow it and not have to think about what I'll do next?

Sorry for the blog.

I think the likeness is fine, judging by your painting so far you have the light coming from the top, so I'd suggest thinking about the 3d form and throwing some shadow to give volume on the lower part of the head and the body. As it stands, those parts in particular look pretty flat, and it makes it look like a flat cardboard cutout of a head on top of a carboard body. With that quick fix I think it'll look quite good, either way I'm sure your grandpa is gonna love it.

Use reference, obviously. Learn about form, perspective, basic anatomy. Do gestures, learn proportions. Trash this piece of shit and start over, if you're feeling like it sucks but you don't know why yet you keep working on it, that's called polishing a turd.

>I know there are some anatomical issues but I'm mostly focusing on just issues with the shading/values.
Oh, "some" is an understatement... this thing is full of anatomical issues, there's not a single thing that's right about it. But that's not the worst thing about your drawing.

This is fundamentally wrong. You need to properly construct your sketch before you ever even think about filling in patches of value or "shading". You don't seem to understand form or perspective, which are two definite prerequisites to being able to do value studies.

Save yourself some time, stop this, and draw some fucking real people. Draw from reference until you can accurately draw a human from memory or imagination.

Looks great!
I can't really add anything anatomy wise, and can only criticise your chicken scratching manner of drawing(pardon me), try either making light single lines, and then trace it over with a softer pencil(3B or similair).
Or erease the lines that aren't the main lines after drawing, again tracing the main lines with a softer pencil before doing so.
Another point from me is to fill out both limbs from the body opposed to just one, the bodies seem to be drawn with only one (lower)leg a couple of times.
And maybe experiment with slightly more exgaterated facial expressions(after or when studying the facial muscles), yours are very nice and neutral, but it kinda stays there too.
Other than that great work!
And sorry for my nitpicking.

Because in a photograph it is made up of pixels, so unless you are color picking the same singular pixel you're going to run into either a color change or value change of some kind. And that will make your art look like mud.

So don't do that. If you have to color pick, then do it from one spot on the picture and put it into a palette so that you can pick the same color over and over again.

Also keeping yourself on a limited set of colors will help you focus on studying.

This is graphite, right?

You need to be putting your graphite down in lighter layers with your pencil as sharp as possible. Also if you have a set of pencils/leads, you should be putting the softer ones down on the darker tones, then filling in the spaces left with harder pencils until you've got a block of tones. Also you overuse the illustrator's trick of throwing in tones diagonally. You should be laying tones down in a way that goes along with the topography of a 3d object. Not flat. The little white lines left behind by your pencil strokes, much like brush strokes, show form. So stop drawing so flat, it's a waste.

Your lines are much too hard around the collar, tie, and suit. You should never press into the paper like that, not only does it ruin the tones and make the paper hard to erase from, you also leave a metallic sheen and that's fucking disgusting.

You're definitely on the right track but you seriously need to work on your technique, stop making your pencil work look so gross.

If you want to go hardcore, only work with the primaries and mix the colors from that. Some oil painters work that way - it's an interesting exercise, I did it in a college watercolor course, we were only allowed to use blue, red, and yellow paint. The first thing the teacher did is show us how to mix black from those - equal amounts of all 3 will make black.

The best reason to eyeball color is to learn how to really see color - most people don't. Colors around a color will influence the eye, and there's a certain amount of optical mixing in the eye, the further away from a painting or screen you get, which is why painters will go across a room to look at their work. Seeing color is something you have to train in, over time, you can't cheat it or take shortcuts. What you think you see - especially as a beginner - isn't always what you think it is, especially if your eye is untrained in value. You'll learn much more trying to match a color manually, than using the eyedropper - and since you're probably not working on a corrected screen, you're eyedropping values and hues that will interact differently, than what you think it looks like.

This is a long process, like I said. Some people have a natural ability at color, a lot struggle with it. The only way to learn it, truly learn is to experiment, and try to build your colors, instead of just copying them.

I use a pretty simple palette when painting digitally, and I mix all of my hues from them. When I know I'll use a certain color a lot, I'll save it to the palette, or I have a mixing layer that I turn on and off as needed.

Instead of the eyedropper, create a layer, that has a 50% grey (neutral) filling it, and make a small round hole in the center. Move that over the area you're looking at, color wise, and try to mix those colors from your palette. Yes, it will be hard at first, but trust me, you'll learn a lot more doing that.

Skin doesn't look like that. You're putting down colors you think belong there, instead of what's really there. If you get a chance, post your reference, it will help explain what I'm saying.

You need more (or any) cool colors and warm colors. Skin color is effected by a lot of things - areas that have more capillaries under the skin are warmer, and have more pink/red - like the nose. The jawline on men has cooler colors, because of the beard/stubble. You need to use cool blues and purples in the highlights, and reds, pinks, oranges, and yellows for the highlights, with white being used sparingly and only on the brightest points, and in the reflection of the eye. Eye sockets are generally cooler, not red like you have. The reflected light on the right side of the face should be a cool color, like a light blue, or violet. It will also help build volume, by using color and not white. Don't use black as a shadow color, use cooler colors like green and blue to make the peach color darker. And don't scribble, like on the forehead.
Tips:
Eyebrows have shadows and highlights, they're not flat color. The hair is finer than the brush you're using.
>Eyelashes are not white.
>Don't cheat on the hair. Use finer brushes, and shape the volume, highlights, mid tones, and shadows. Render the hairline.

Try not to use so much black in the skin, like on the hands, they're dead and cold, and hands are generally pretty warm. Just keep in mind that the human eye can recognize a lot of shape and value information with very little lighting especially with stuff like faces. I'd recommend putting your color.jpg on another screen for reference and starting to work on the image from dark to light building it up slowly as you go.

Just draw the parts where you think the light would hit from the bunny and start building the mid values from there.

I made a thread on movie stills yesterday:

>>3240044

Just skip all the anime bullshit some joker was posting as a super funny joke and you'll find some relatively similar lighting situations. Just try to be a little more subtle in the beginning. Work in black and white if that helps and worry about the color later.

That is true, I forget that sometimes I think cause I'm just overly fearful. I appreciate your feedback and I'll do some studies in the thread. I have another painting up next that is the same kind of lighting situation.
Thanks anon

Christmas is coming so I gotta do something nice and PC for dat moist internet pussy... I'm trying to make an elf character who's a mix of a traditional Christmas elf but also something that could work in a high fantasy context. He's gonna be chilling in some barn or forest or some shit just looking at his sweet owl buddy.

This is going to be a painting so I'm not really looking for feedback on the line quality. This is all ready way more than what I'd need to get started with a painting.

Any ideas/feedback on his gear, pose etc. would be really nice...

I think the idea is kind of nice. I like the symbols overall and if redone this could become a really nice piece.

The execution is badly lacking though. She's full of scribble and your lighting and anatomy are extremely inconsistent. I'd recommend looking at Maciej Kuciara's ink pieces from his Artstation. He's not an amazing inker but his techniques are relatively easy to learn for a novice and his subject matter is often quite similar:

Fuck.
Can anyone here help this poor retarded man who doesn't know how to color? I always try the gradient maps and I never make it work. I don't know if I should change my approach to something that suits me better, or fix something about the gradient map approach to make it work.

Or maybe I should give up and stop playing with fire (literally) for some less complicated lighting?

Gradient maps apply colors to a grayscale drawing based on the values. You can basically set the color of the highlights, shadows, and midtones and have the program do the rest.

>>3246064
Please don't jump to gradient maps if you don't fully understand how to color, it'll only set you back in the long run. You have two options: keep doing grayscales and color over using layer modes or directly paint the colors from the start. Would be smart to go for something less complicated during your trial runs.

I don't know how many times one has to repeat that people need to go back and study perspective, anatomy, values, colors, and composition before people actually take the advice rather than asking "What about now does it look right?" time and time again.

You're not retarded, just dishonest with yourself.

No composition, head facing forward and features in awful, ugly proportions, incorrect anatomy across the board, poor values, poor tones, poor everything. This isn't a WIP it's a Shit In Progress.

But hey, that bit of rendering of the cloth stretch between her tits is sure to make up for lack of hands and feet.

Like the age old saying goes; "Ask, and ye shall receive".

One of the hardest things in life for me was learning to ask for what I needed and trusting that the Cosmic would provide. "Letting go" was not a word in my vocabulary!

While it can be difficult overcoming this barrier to living in fullness and joy, it has been proven many times to my scientific satisfaction, that the principle of asking does work.

I feel like the colors in this would benefit from some shifts in temperature and saturation. Like if the colors in the shadowy undersides of the forms were cooler, like trending more towards a bluish or greenish gray as opposed to the warmer orange-ish colors in the lit areas, or the reverse with the light being a more icy bluish tint and the shadows being warm like they are. I think a few areas could use a more saturated midtone, specifically where the light and shadow meet too. Lastly and this is just personal preference but a lot of her structure looks like a young person but she has some very deep set creases that make her look uncannily old. I think softening those some would help.
All of this might be better for next time though. At this stage that might just overwork the piece and ruin it.

thanks for the crit anon. i might try throwing some cool colors on parts of it just to see what it might look like, and i'll definitely keep your notes in mind for the next piece.

great note regarding the structure/wrinkles discrepancy. would never have caught that on my own. the lay-in was really rough, so I didn't have a clear, defined character in mind before I started rendering. that was dumb.

I'm sorry but bad brushwork, bad colors, bad construction. Values work overall but it's really messy.

Major pointer is the texture. Work on big resolution and use smaller strokes, and don't use only chalky brushes.

Good luck. Also read a bit of color theory, instead of using palettes or whatever it is you're going with the colors.

Her left eye is out of the socket. Arm and hand gripping the sword could use work, angles mostly so it's not rigid.
Otherwise not bad.

>>3250011
Could be fixed by emphasizing the tilt in the pelvis.

>>3249075
Proportions could use work, head is too big and her right leg is very small.
Bad perspective on the figure, mainly the ass and the shoulders. Boobs are dislocated, not coming from the chest. Some more minor things like the knee should be lower The hands and feet are nice. Overall if you learn to place the major masses correctly in space it won't be bad.

>>3252862
Pretty good. I like the idea and your rendering is good.
Just a tiny tip composition wise. I'm not sure if this is the whole image but if the focal point is the face/bird area then I think it's a bit to cramped in that corner. Especially since the bird is descending, doesn't look too good at the edge of the frame.
Doesn't have to be centered of course but you get the point.

So I tried expanding the canvas and I think it did wonders for the piece. I'm having problems with my monitors. It looks perfectly fine on the one I'm drawing on and completely fucked on the other. I'm getting an iPad tomorrow so that's nice...

The image was looking a bit flat so I also added a bit of rundown, makeshift fence to the left side now that there's more space to add depth.

Also added some placeholder birds to the top left as I felt like the composition was getting really unbalanced (everything's on the left). Yeah, it's "that" bird brush. I'll paint in my own birds if you guys think it's a good idea.

Feed mah back.
