IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Definitely have the right idea with the shading and lighting render. I do not know why you are chosing to work with lines that are so thick? Also clean up your line work. Youre doing that thing that people often do when they draw an elipse, where they keeping going over the sloppy ones over and over until the elipse eventually evens out. Dont work like that because the correct lines are just lost under all the other attempts. Think about your lines and ghost if necessary.

Hey can someone show me what books to read/study so I can master how to do poses like pic-related? I see a lot of people who draw these doll-like bodies with no faces, and they have a X to help you figure out where the eyes and mouth go. I even read books that use them as an example. but what I need to do is figure out the proportions.

How wide should the head be in comparison to its height? How does the doll-like body work? (Is it that 8 head shit?) I'm trying to figure out what resources people are using to figure out these dimensions, if there's a good book that tells you about the eye placement and so on.

My goal is just being to able to draw these blank dolls in a hundred different poses.

having a big cloak over everything kind of prevents you from having any design because it's all covered up

I think the design is okay, its not super original but the character is from my pure imagination. What I found interesting is that the graphics shapes can be applied to the rendering and the brushwork, leyendcker does something like this but is was not successful. I had practiced mostly using Vilppu's method of construction and basic anatomy. I only got into gesturing very lightly before classes started up and I lost a lot of my free time.

>same stiff pose with one leg awkwardly jutting out.
The pose has to be the same, I was drawing the same piece again. It is quite stiff, it was an absolute pain boxing out and I couldn't find a reference if I tried, but most of the stiffness lies in the arms.

The legs are relatively natural, it's a simple strut like pose (I just stood up and did it myself, and it feels natural,) but the arms and hands are very odd.

>(unless her looking like a dwarf was intentional)
She looks like she'd be maybe 5'3"~4" standing straight. The calves are a bit short, I'm not disagreeing, but not as bad as you seem to make it.

A portrait is hard, The most important part is the measurement, to do this you simplify the shapes of the face. Block IN is called.

this is a pretty bad character trait

there was a really good post in a thread somewhere (i didn't save the image like an idiot) about people who spend too much time on /ic/ and especially spending their time relying on advice to help them push through

in reality, you should spend little time here yet take advantage of the resources and not be so dependent on other's feedback when what you want to learn/improve on could be done with just studies, understanding of values, and knowing how to blend well (which comes with practice)

the idea is that self-critique and analysis goes a really long way and when you cry every thread saying "need answer" goes against the common-sense solution: being independent, which in turn leads to a less stressful process

i like you but i'm afraid of what's going to happen if you suddenly don't have a support system in the future

isnt it the case that hard edges dont exist with the exception of direct light/shadow? only differing steepness of blends. is it a fault in that varying steepness?

>> No.3234340

>>3234337
Maybe in real life they're not always clear or visible but in painting it always helps to accentuate the form. They are always where the planes face away from the light or where two different forms converge. Blending everything can end up softening the form and making things looks blurry/muddy. It's sometimes useful if you want to portray the softness of a subject (like people do when painting women's faces) but for hard solid objects like statues it helps to include hard edges. Even if they aren't necessarily visible you should try to visualize where they might be and see if it looks better with the inclusion of a hard edge or without.

Obviously, you are an idiot. Pic related didn't use a soft brush, but a high dpi in a decent drawing software.
Just make the canvas big enough and don't use the legacy pen. If you're working in MS Paint you can forget about smooth lines like that.

>>3233133
At 5 minutes per doll it would take 83 hours. This doesn't take into consideration that you need several skills before being able to draw such doll in that time frame like the motoric skills of drawing the lines you want, the skill of estimating proportions and the skill of understanding forms, as well as basic knowledge about figure drawing such as gesture, balance and landmarks.

The draw 1000 is just silly. Rushing through it won't get you anywhere. If you're interested in this, just read the first few chapters of Hampton's book, he's pretty straight forward with the process.

As for the time frame: It doesn't matter. It depends on your existing skill, your dedication, effort and learning ability. Pic realted is on a relatively low skill level that should be achievable in a reasonable amount of time, even for an absolute beginner.

So your work won't simply be line work. Back with the rest of week 2 of dynamic sketching. So I tried to follow this anon`s advice >>3232318 and tried focusing on making curvature of the Contour Lines on the sides more extreme/adding more of the lines and hopefully in the process made them more solid/3d.

I did notice, that my muscle memory is already used to doing it more flat, like this: >>3232313 so I did notice some errors appearing, like overshooting the form and generally worse line quality, but that should fix itself by practice.

I told you before: your focus is too scattered and you are biting off more than you can chew. You are not skilled enough to be tackling elaborate finished compositions when you don't even understand anatomy and perspective.

Learn proper head construction and then be more disciplined and conscious about drawing what you actually see filling in the features. Many beginners do what you've done here, where facial features are kind of smeared and skewed over on the face to be more front oriented. This is because your unconscious brain is taking control a bit and you are symbol drawing to a degree. Pic is your brain's idea of lips, so your impulse is to draw more like that.

Draw what you see. Look at it again. Her facial features are far too small.

when i first started out, people kept telling me what i shouldn't do, and that i shouldn't use 'x' material or whatever, and i was afraid of trying different mediums and start digital painting. i think people on /ic/ are so focused on the grind they forget what they're drawing for in the first place. it seems like most people have lofty dreams of becoming a concept artist, so it's strange to me that people could take themselves so seriously when they're going to be drawing spaceships or goblins or nerdy stuff.

How and what are you drawing? And what are your goals. Post work and then where you want to be. If you are beginner you are probably doing these things, it's probably why.

-Drawing from imagination

-doing too much (trying to finish a piece, working on shading when your perspective sucks, trying to put your whole damn animu fantasy on paper etc).

-simply not practicing enough (everyday could mean only 20 minutes a day)

-inhibited by excuses and rationalizations that mask your weak will in terms of grinding boring technical stuff (this is just my style, I just want to draw anime so I don't need Proko-semai, etc.)

Remember, just pure hours put into drawing isn't everything. If you are not practicing mindfully and effectively you're just internalizing errors and you will be stuck in a loop.

>Jazza's work is really good

It's really not. It is not to say that Jazza has no skill or know-how at all, but calling him "really good" is such a massive stretch. The main problem is definitely with his coloring and rendering which is still so weak and misses the mark far too much.

On the left and rightmost drawings the value scales are so flaccid it makes my head hurt. They look like not yet finished works. Not pushing value is a common rookie mistake. Middle left is laughable with that sharp black outline around the hair. The orc is decent but still looks a tad flat. Like I said, it's not that he has no ability. I don't know when these we're made, and they're from a compendium of works he has for sale (lel) you have to assume he has chosen these as representative works.

Beyond that his figures are stiff, like he hasn't learned gesture, I don't know that he has any good grasp of perspective or any compositional skills. He tends to just draw forward facing and 3/4 figures in empty space.

Jazza seems like a nice guy and a bro, but you have so many other options that there is no reason to go with Jazza's tutorials. Jazza has serious improving to do himself, not that I think he will. When you've settled into millions of subs and status as a tutorial guru for people worse than you, it might be hard to find the hunger to improve.

I hate sounding like a hater, and I definitely don't begrudge Jazza his online success, but I do think it is unfortunate that the most popular art instruction presence on Youtube is him.

>why is that
I've always enjoyed looking at quick sketches more than finished work and I also don't think I'm that good so I avoid wasting too much time on things. I'm also interested in doing animation so getting good at quick sketching is probably for the best. I wasn't suggesting you suddenly draw her sitting or lying down or curling into a ball.
The stiffness is something you can fix even if the intention (so to speak) of the pose remains the same.
Also the arms are not the main culprit of the overall stiffness, rather its the lack of motion (twist & tilt) Proko: https://youtu.be/yqxPHew5bGQ?t=5m38s
The same principle of motion can also apply to the legs.

Too much outline and clutter, but that's fine at this point, especially since gesture starts to shine through in some of them.
When you find yourself focusing too much on the outline try to think of the longest axis of each form and how to describe it in the longest most simple line.
Gesture is a really simple idea that is hard to grasp/implement, since it's mostly practice and questioning yourself if you're even doing it right it can be royally frustrating.
Theres nothing to be done except to keep practicing and to every now and then look up instructions (Proko, Vilppu or others) as not to go off the rails completely.

I'm guessing your making use of digital painting, ok with blending you place your initial tonal values with a hard brush which I assume you have done. Now with regards to blending most amatures tend to try and smudge the colours in order to blend into one another, now in order for colours in order to seemlessy transition into one another you should make use of the following method.

You have black and white for example, instead of trying to blend by trying to smudge the colours together. One should place a midtone between the two colours so instesd of smudging the colours together, so instead of smudging black and white you place the colour grey inbetween, now it doesn't stop there so towards the white you should place a lighter tone of grey and towards the black you should place a lighter shade of black. So how you would see it is the following.

BLACK - DARK GREY- GREY- LIGHT GREY- WHITE

After doing this just blend the colours by taking on stroke and taking your brush vertically.

Here's a video that might help you

Even in terms of cartoons its pretty bad, if you'd like to learn how to draw cartoons Loomis fun with the pencil may help. But with that consisting of around 200 pages, i suggest instead taking a shorter path and more beneficial path by reading G.E Hicks a guide to figure drawing, first 25 pages most important. If you follow the suggestions he has given to copy the plates, (from the bargue drawing course) it will help you to develop good taste. I think your taste has not been sufficiently developed in terms of art. Though copying the plates WILL BE HARD no easy feat by following G.E Hicks INSTRUCTIONS TO THE DOT. I hate sounding like a shiller here but checking out ZinLim on youtube, i personally find him far better than most of the artists on youtube. But if you're afraid of the Meme. Another artist to look out for on youtube thats just as good is Vladimir Volegov https://youtu.be/hoIho9BE-bE . There is no commentary on both of the videos, but I find that this greatly helps the viewer as the process seems basic and is not rushed through, this helping amatures greatly .

Wha's the best thing to draw as an absolute beginner?
I've been doing the drawabox excersises but I can't even draw a good ellipse or straight line freehand right now, and it's impossible to draw from life for me right now.
