I'm not feeling it either. it's just a guy posing with his weapons in an empty void. What's the story behind it? How can you expect to have good shadows and reflected light on his outfit without any environment.
Unless it's a character concept art piece, in which case you didn't do a good job by hiding half his armor behind the shield.

Aluminium? You mean the reflections on her (I though soft features and long hair would give it out) cuirass? I didn't really think about the materials, as it's not set in any particular universe—just a picture inspired by a description (something like "old, ragged warrior in dented armor") in some article about art on design.tutplus, but I wanted to give her some kind of light-looking armor to emphasize that it's not actually a sturdy male knight like her "parent."

Perspective? Hard to point out, but it seems like the pose isn't read as intended because of the crotch, is it so?

The sword shouldn't be able to penetrate armour like that, but to sell that a bit more, I'd maybe actually show how thick the metal is?
I don't want to sound mean, but there is a lot that's not working right with this piece. I wouldn't use pure blacks, I'd raise the saturation on them shadows and push for some warmth on them if the highlights and bounce lights are colder.

The gauntlet looks like it needs to be articulated more and not one solid lump of metal as it's being implied right now. I can't really tell what sort of material the guy's wearing, f it's made of metal or leather or whatever. The tears are a bit too obvious of a touch imo personally. You do have potential though, so keep going and do more direct studies at this stage.

>> No.3230868

>>3230838
Try making the dur bigger.
Repaint the water to reflect more sky, should be quite dark, just looks like a field or sludge.

If you want to keep some of that aqua colour, have it glowing subtly from the depths or just reflecting off the dur a bit.

Last, try to do something to increase the sense of depth of space/distance. rn, the water also looks like a wall. Try playing with the little islands (make very tiny dim ones as you go further back) and some horizontal colour fields, waves and wavelets, etc whatever.. to get a sense of large distance going to the horizon

Looking pretty good. You might want to look into some muscle reference for the torso though before adding a lot of detail/accessories. Is he supposed to be wearing some kind of armor or is the suit showing his underlying muscle definition? If it's the latter you definitely need to work on the muscle anatomy...

when i was creating the sketch for it, I got subconscious inspiration from a bunch of different sources, but most obvious came from the story of Aragorn's death and how the kingdom devolved into petty squabbles between men in the fourth age - hence the name of the painting: Reign of the Last King, or maybe, last true king.

Anyway, when I think about this piece, I can't seem to make up my mind whether I want it to be about an old monarch in his last moments, or if I want it to be something more ominous. Perhaps he was assassinated and succumbed to poison? Maybe it makes you wonder about his life story, what events transpired during his rule, what he was like as a person, etc.
His colorful outfit contrasts with the desaturated background, which reminds me of a painting I saw. I can't remember the name but it's a still life of a specific type of flower that shed their petals right as they become most 'ripe', and the painting depicts those flowers at the moment just before that happens.

This piece is meant to invoke these kinds of themes. Notice also how the pose is very uncharacteristic of royal portraits. Where kings usually appear magnificent and big, this guy looks kinda like your grandpa's fallen asleep in his favorite rocking chair. I think that provides an interesting contrast that I personally haven't seen before, if only most vaguely in Stańczyk, but that's an entirely different context.

If you want a less obscure explanation, you could say I felt kinda low, and I channeled that loneliness and energy into this piece. It depicts what I felt like when I initiated the painting. I'll post it again once it's finished.

I'd add that you might want to work with a hard brush with 100% opacity for as long as possible. Only start using the opacity or flow/softness when you have the overall image done. I don't even think you'd have to use the a soft brush in this one at all though...

Try to align your strokes so they either go to the direction of the surface of the object you're painting or towards the vanishing point. Focus on the whole image first and refine the area of focus where you want the viewer to looks with really sharp details at the very end. It's a good idea to have most of the detail in areas where the light is hitting and very little-no detail on the areas with shadows.

This is 4chan, this is the internet, if your art sucks, people will say so, if your art's amazing, people will say so because those are the things people like to talk about. Nobody likes to talk about anything in between. Chances are if you're not getting much response your work lies somewhere in that big grey area and you should take the silence as just that.

If you're put off by a lack of responses or completely diminished by a negative one then I'm sorry but you aren't going to get to where you want to be as an artist. Take the criticism or lack there of and consider what it means and try to improve. That's all you can do.

In the case of "meme painting" I'm not even sure what it means but I can take a gander: It looks like an attempt at a specific style of painting but it utterly falls short because, like I replied to it yesterday or whatever, the colors are nice but it lacks any form or substance. It looks like whoever painted it knows how to work colors and knows how to effectively stroke a brush across a canvas and that person thought that would be enough to create those sorts of effortlessly beautiful painterly images. Unfortunately, however, the lack of effort is painfully evident.

is that enough (you)?

Would I be better off focusing on one body type at a time and developing on that one thing before moving onto a different body? Or should I go with whatever type I feel like at the time? Most production art in movie/video game posters is based on 3D. The same compositional rules and design stuff need to work in sculptural work as well. Also, are you implying that sculpture is not an art form? It's a digital sculpture. It's not a procedural thing. It was a ball and I made it into a shark dude. Not really different from drawing.

I was trolling. But regardless you don't NEED to be or do anything but be and do good art. No matter how you make it if you're good you will get whatever jobs are available. 3d or no. I speak from experience. I've over painted stuff plenty of times but it's usually when a shot has already been called out and the models roughly placed in they ask me to make it look like it will in the film. In that regard I'm just a cog in a wheel. It just grinds my gears when people insist there are all these rules to getting into this kind of job or that kind. Most production/concept artists use 3d simply because they aren't fast enough to paint the idea from scratch. That's not to say it would be impossible, it's just they aren't good enough. And that's not to say they're wrong for using 3d they just aren't good enough to go without it. There's a difference between being able to paint well and paint well quickly, it's all trial and error but for those who paint quick there's simply less error and that's where I strive to be.

I really do agree with you then. I've only been messing around with ZBrush for a couple of months now and I feel like it's helping me play around with anatomical proportions with monster characters and shit. This Street Sharks thing was kind of a test for myself. I'm trying to figure out how far I should take my pieces in 3D before starting the over painting process. I think in the future I'll make much cruder sculpts and use them as reference instead of over painting since I feel like I'm having to over paint everything anyway to get a nicer looking end result and I'm having to "fake" edge control since all the detail was there from the start... Sculpting is pretty darn fun tho!

>>3235928

This is looking really nice. The combination of colors is something you'd think wouldn't work but somehow it does. Some strong, graphical silhouettes in all your objects but it's also making everything look a little flat. I don't know if that's what you're going for. Hey, thanks a lot for taking the time to look at my crap. You're right about me not caring about the blanket... I shouldn't have used that texture brush on it as now it draws more attention when I didn't take the proper time to do the construction.

It's really easy to lose sight of the original construction stuff when you start rendering, putting in values and fixing the proportional issues. I'm looking at Proko's hand construction tutorials and I'll definitely be studying that shit in my sketch book during the next few months. Maybe do stuff where I don't even shade anything and just build the character from spheres cylinders and boxes, which I didn't do here.

You are very good at rendering but you should probably lay that off for a while and just try to go simpler, I agree. I see where youre coming from, I think its always important not to loose the big picture, Bridgman said that its important to always look for the square underlying structure, as in the end everything consists of shapes and therefore you could break everything down to squares. You are going to make it bro <3
I only have this old anatomy study of mine on my desktop now, I think my rendering isnt on par with yours but I feel I managed to feel the shapes better, I really like studying anatomy because of all the plane shifts that are v ery obvious and give 3d effects even in photos

That's really nice. I like how you're using straight lines to tighten the silhouette. I actually prefer the dude on the left though even if we can't see him properly. Dem is sum strong shapes.

Funny that you should mention Bridgeman as I just started studying his stuff at the bar yesterday (was pretty fucking drunk so no image provided). I'm having a hard time deciding how to do the studies. I don't really want to mimic his cross hatching as it defeats the point of doing a construction/anatomy- study but I see a lot of people also do that. It's also impossible to get the energy in the strokes if you try to do them exactly like he did. I'm probably gonna stick to lines and doing the shading"my way".

>the two light sources you have are in front and behind it
You seem to have a faulty understanding of light - there is no direct light on the bag, the soft shadow under it is mere ambient occlusion - which makes it correct.
If we exclude ambient light and the bag is in shadow, some parts of it can't be more in shadow than others, can they.

Very nice. Reminds me of Mikhail Rakhmatullin's art.
It has a nice flat graphic quality to it, don't lose it in the process of rendering.

The question thread is saged.
Can someone please tell me what "1/8 bleed" means or how I do that? I'm supposed to make a drawing that's 11x17 with "trim, 1/8 bleed" for a commission.

>> No.3237861

>>3237851
I recently did this. Bleed is letting the printer know how much room the is. if you make a document at 11x17 put your markers at about half and inch to and inch in to allow "bleed".

>> No.3237867

>>3237851
Bleed is the stuff outside the bounds. It's so you can cut the edges and have the image go edge to edge. I'm not American but I would assume "1/8 bleed" would refer to one eight of an inch of "bleed" room, which makes sense to me because last time I made something for print, they told me to have 3mm bleed, which is about 1/8th of an inch.

I don't know about this anymore. I was super stoked on the idea but after I got this far and took a step back it just seems very blaaah. I need to better show the ideas I want to convey because right now it just looks like some stupid women getting changed in the forest.

The idea I'm going with is that these women are skin walkers and they can morph into animals and such. But the way it works is that there are 2 main rules:

1. Transformation takes place out of the mouth and when transforming from a creature into another creature, the previous creature is left behind as a dead body.

2. they can transform into smaller creatures of any size at any time, but transforming into a larger creature can only be done at slight intervals. Such that a rabbit could not transform into a human because the size difference is too great, but a rabbit could transform into a badger, then a dog, then a wolf then a deer then a moose etc etc

Any ideas on how to make it better?

I think it reads like some models are just hanging around and the wolf is chilling while chewing one of the girls leg. She's just like "I'm fine with this".

I think you'd need to have one of the girls in another stage of the transformation to show us what's really going on. Like she's 50% inside a wolf or something. Overall the whole mood is too casual to my liking.

It's not a terrible idea or anything and I like your composition. Reminds me of the Clovn/Violator transformation from the 90's Spawn movie.

How would you paint someone wearing black at night? I'm trying paint someone's patronus while they're wearing black robes and a black collared shirt. If is light in the background, then the patronus won't stick out. If its dark in the background, the robe will blend into the background too much.

Yes it definiltey looks like harley quinn. She's blonde with pigtails and with that new garbage movie her costume is pink/red and blue.
The whole 'love' thing doesn't really help because she's like the "in love" character and her famous mantras are "mad love". You really need to change it to like orange and yellow or something.
