lol, I was just about to say it reminds me of Rubens, went to look up the sketch I was thinking about, but it's actually Rubens as well.
I saw a sketch of this painting in the Royal Academy years ago and it featured some really interesting facial expressions, very small. You could see some very grotesque, caricature-like faces.

Seeing the Hirémy-Hirschl IRL was like looking right into a dark cave. It's just stunning. Not a single reproduction I could find even gets close to that impression you have seeing it right in front of you.

The retards are strong in /ic/. I've made the mistake to argue with some cunts on here.

nope, it's definitely not cut.
look in the top right corner. there is a faint line on the outside, near the edge of the paper. it's the actual edge of the print plate, which often shows in etchings. if you manage to clean the rim completely, it almost doesn't show, but you can see it here. I've done etching on copper plates.

I've had some mad experiences, standing in front of masterpieces.

Notice on the far left of >>3225306 "Souls on Acheron" ... how Hirschl put a stop in dynamics in this entire area: there is a ferryman in the distance and this whole corner of the painting is arrested with the bent arms and the almost perfectly horizontal / vertical lines they make ... it's a work of genious.

I went to see the entire show again, mostly for this painting. It's huge, something like 13 feet wide ....

First of all, you don't look at paintings through the computer screen as JPEGs in some 800 by 650px resolution. You look at paintings by going to exhibitions and seeing them face to face.

Looking at paintings on the internet is like listening to a bad mp3 instead of going to a live concert.

Second:

Morandi is like a quick test to see if someone has a good sense for painting. If you can't see the subtle fascination in a Morandi, you haven't seen enough paintings, are a completely uninformed beginner, or you simply have no sense for painting whatsoever (in that case, stick to your /ic/ manga cartoon Wacom faggotry).

The case being that there are mostly children on /ic/ who yearn to be able to draw Adventure Time or some other cartoon characters, it comes as no surprise that you have no means of recognizing a good painting. Most of you kids who easily dismiss modern art, know Van Gogh, Picasso and Salvador Dalí at most ... you know the popstars of painting and even those only on a superficial level, yet you think that you can make a judgement on a painting, based on some flat photograph in 800 by 650px.

Morandi has been called an "artists artist" for a reason. However, I can't make you see the unspeakable things in Morandis painting, if you don't have eyes for them. If you were able to say what it is that is fascinating about his paintings, you could still dismiss it for your personal taste, but I suspect you kids are just clueless. Not speaking about everyone on here, but most of you.

As I've mentioned elsewhere, it is absolutely clear that /ic/ should be renamed to "illustration/critique". There is hardly any worthwhile debate on fine art up here. Which is fine, but it's also missleading.

there are a lot of second-hand catalogues of old masters out there. check your local flea-market page or craigslist giveaway or something like that.
I got some really decent quality catalogues from second-hand sites for half or a third the orig. price.

You can print some of these from highres files directly from the web, but you need a good-tier printer like Epson ET-14000 and high qual. photoprint paper. plus, you need to calibrate your printer (find the correct ICC profile etc.) to get good results, maybe play with contrast from the orig. file, too.

The thing that strikes you about the Acharon painting is the complete shift to the left side, along with a lot of paradox dynamics. It is the the river Styx, all the dead are roaming the vicinities, and thusly you see a lot of half-asleep, haf-corpses around. The way Adolf Hirémy-Hirschl has portraited this is spot on to the narrative of the picture, while it still holds beauty to admire for the viewer. You are held in a very strong field of tension between admiration and horror.

I have always loved these types of pieces most of all. They have the perfect balance of simplicity with mate coloring for large portions of the piece but with lovely brush detail in all the right places. Coloring is mellow but still has presence. Seeing them makes me wish I still did art. I used to in high school but I stopped because I realized I was dogshit at it and I like my field and don't want to half ass it with distractions. The shin hanga movement was doing some wild shit. With woodblock, there's so much craft involved, as long as you don't fuck up with the cutting and start with an okay drawing, the results end up pretty good. And you can fix the colors if you don't like them. I've been figuring out how to replicate the look in watercolor, but it doesn't have the same texture.

They use stamped blocks of ink, see the video in >>3225345. It's multiple pressings of multiple color blocks. What it loses when you try to cheat with watercolor is the texture of the rice paper and the embossing. You also can't get those razor sharp outlines or slightly offset quality.

And the blocks give the ink a texture. You can do texture in watercolor, but this kind is more work than it's worth. Not to mention those gradients and patterns are too smooth and too detailed. Muchas stained glass effect is the most you can get out of the medium. Woodcut is another level of detail.

Neat. Also I have had some luck with crisper (than watercolor) black outlines with decent markers. It doesn't come close to woodblock but it works somewhat. I used to do marker outlines and watercolor/marker coloring when I used to draw.

The big difference is that when you do watercolor like this, it looks like shit on the paper. Woodblock has that very uniform printed ink quality while watercolor looks like you painted it and put a marker to it. It scans well, but the texture in person just doesn't play to the strengths. It made me realize I needed to think about brush strokes and use them well.

I like the contrast of the light background with the black shape of the boat, how it feels somewhat seperate from the surrounding, almost invasive to a serene seascape. And the straight on angle chosen, so it doesn't even read as a boat immediately, but just an open door to a private chamber on an open lake.

nope, in fact, I advise you to go to any exhibition and ignore the audioguides, blocks of texts, explanations, anything that will give you a preconceived notion on the pictures. If you really end up confused and can't point your finger on what the works are about, that's the moment when you should read up on the background.

My point is that it spoils your first impression if you read up on the exhibition beforehand. Curators are actively trying to make art more accessible and they do so by over-explaining stuff, dumbing-down what you see and imposing their opinion on you. I know this, bc a friend of mine is in culture management studies and this is what curators do now: get new target audiences, dumb-down your exhibition experience, over-explain stuff, introduce interactive shit like art-apps that go with the exhibition (animated paintings, games, quiz, all that shit).
