pay less attention to recreating the shading and colors of the muscles, which is just the original artist trying to make his study "art" and more on learning the muscles themselves. Don't look at it like "well in this muscle area there's a bunch of lines so I'll draw a bunch of lines", and instead study each individual line on it's own, combined to make the object you are drawing. Same goes for everything you practice drawing. Think of every atom or "pixel" of what you are drawing in life, and recreate it down to it's exactly value, texture, line, and color.

I feel like you would benefit a lot from a more direct and perhaps simplified approach. Break the form down into two or three values, light and dark, and separate them very clearly before starting to shade stuff in. I find this makes identifying core forms and muscle groups on the body super easy since you're not bogged down by vague midtones. And this is maybe just personally preference but don't hatch all recklessly with short, scribbled lines, take control of the strokes you put down on the paper

not sure you're learning anything from this? you're copying as if your aim were to study the drawing style of the reference, but if your goal is to learn the muscles, you want to focus on their arrangement against each other, respective sizes, how they move and interact, not on rendering out this exact image.
^just wrote all that then realized you've already gotten that as critique hehe xd you're welcome for the new information
>>3222257
definitely better, i think the top left might be the most useful thing bc you're clearly delineating the different groups, helps you learn their movement as i said

>>3222672

>>3222821
idk what you mean by "work" but i think it's not bad. think about cropping more, the cutoff of the body on the sides looks odd and you dont need to cram the entire figure in the frame, like the top of the head nearly touching the edge isn't appealing. widen up the frame and you can fit in the star-type things in the background in a much more space out, less busy looking
the hatching isn't bad, maybe think about the direction of the strokes more, esp on skull thing

>> No.3223390

>>3223385
I'm using chalk pastels (nupastel + polychromos) and pastel pencils for details.

With oil pastels, I find you really have to build up a thick layer for them to start to work, like consider just laying down a base colour and covering the paper.

With both, it helps to break the stick into a smaller chunk (I'm using 1 inch on an 8x11 drawing) and use the long edge, this way you can get both soft and sharp edges by just angling the stick slightly, and it really helps you feel the forms.

Try to keep it more focused when asking for qrit. If you post a clutter of different drawings most people are likely to ignore you, and you won't get anything. Also Try to ask for specifics (anatomy, colors, light, proportions etc). That said let's look at the green girl on the far left (Dominator from wander over yonder?).
Try to get it more fleshed out, your lines don't do your drawing justice when you look at the hair or her left arm. Your shading is WAY too unfinished. You need to utilize light in order to make the body POP, and give it a sense of 3D space. ESPECIALLY on the face and the hair. Look at real life refs, they're the best! And for god's sake finish that hand, it doesn't even look linke one.
Lastly if you wanna talk about the design, you're not doing a very good way of conveying her character. From pic related, you can instantly see, without having watched the show (Which I have not), that Dominator is a mix of feminine and masquline traits. With an elegant skrit and a tall slim figure, but lots of points and spikes on her armor. And perhaps more importantly her everyday shoes. From her design alone we glean that Dominator is strong and to be feared, unafraid, and carefree. This is what you need to have in mind when you draw her, if you want to make your drawing look like Dominator personality-wise.

To me it kinda just looks like a crappy my little pony oc, to be honest.
I'm sorry to say this, but i feel like you wildly overestimate your expertise when i comes to critisizing artwork. To say that this one is an unfinished piece is kind of a "no shit" statement, i don't think he really claimed it to be finished, so you didn't say much.
Now i kinda get (and correct me if i'm wrong) why you're doing that, you don't want people to feel left out because noone replied to their work, but really, a critique is not something you should be trying to force out of yourself, it really doesn't help anyone. If you see something that is obviously wrong with the piece, it's gonna jump out at you regardless, and then you can point that out, otherwise just pass it by, you're only gonna confuse the person who's asking for a critique. That's the exact reason why people generally don't get a lot of critiques, because everyone just goes "eh, i don't really have much to say".

You can just say that you like/don't like it, if you feel compelled to do so, it would be better than trying to squeeze some criticism out of yourself.

Face is nice but I don't like the asymmetry of the bone structure, the head is missing volume at the back, front leg is too short at the thigh/quad, the crotch is too low (saggy pants effect), his left arm is too short/you don't show the bend in the elbow and forshortening well enough

sword is pretty thin and fragile compared to the real article and miniscule compared to the dagger (what shape even is the dagger? Unclear whether it is a symmetrical commando knife or bowie knife style blade, and the hilt, guard and pommel is all kinds of fucked up

The belt's perspective and curvature is wrong, especially where it vanishes over his hip, and the shape of the buckles is all warped (i can't tell if they're ovals). The coin chain belt is all out of wack too and would instantly slide down his legs and trip him up

I know he's not idealised but if you were going to improve him, give him thinner hips (he has birthing tier, more lats and traps (the armour cuirass would give that bulk too)

his left foot is all fucked up (ankle not bendy enough, heel way too flat and far back, ball of foot and toes are in the wrong place, the sole of the shoe doesn't make any perspective sense

neck area of the plate armour is a little fucked too

I like him though, would like to see him with better colouring and less scratchy, more purposeful lines

There's too much empty space. The focal points are fairly small, and anything that isn't a focal point is a void, from the reaper's cloak to the literal space background. Especially apparent when looking at the thumbnail.

From the line drawing I would have guessed that you planned to make the background an actual room that matches the ornate chair.

You are making great pictures and your intuition on weight in composition is ace. The posture of the girl is excellent and the way the grim reaper engulfs her like mist is spot on.

You don't need to listen to the stereotypical advice from illustration suckers in here. They are the ones who need help. You have a good intuition, follow it, and you will be fine.

However, he kind of had an idea about setting the picture in a room. You could still keep basically the same nice composition, but vaguely hint at a room in the bg.

I think the thing to fix is the arm with the dagger: The angle looks really weird right now, like he'd have a super short forearm and super long humerus and even the grip makes no sense. It's a difficult fix because the skull is so far away, but I wouldn;t want to change the composition. Try like redline?

Thanks for your replies. Yep, at first I wanted to draw a room as a background, but that was before deciding that the ripper would be so big, so at this point I would have to put the chair literally in the middle of an empty room to not interfear with the ripper.
Also, thanks for the redline, but I think it would be too confusing and you couldn't see a great part of the arm. So I went for a clear silhouette even though it might be a too long arm.
If you compare with the Wip, you can see that I made the background and the ripper's bottom darker so there is less contrast overall and you focus on the girl. Do you think it helps the composition or it makes the image less impactfull and interesting? There is no problem in changing it back.
I'll post this tomorrow or the next, so if you feel like
I need to change the skirt or the face (which I'm not 100% convinced are right) or anything else, it's allright

Not that anon but it's important to point this out: there's a neat optical illusion going on in your image as is. The dense black void in the middle almost appears to move as you stare at it. It's really good overall for the first few seconds. I discovered the footsprints and a little story might be behind this.

I think you might have worked on this for way too long and you can't see what it's missing. I noticed that the sand and the grey clouds share the same tone and darkness. She could need a very faint, fuzzy shadow halo around her feet. The sand could be at least a bit brighter than the sky

For the clouds, i think you've chosen a too evenly grey tone that goes all the way from the top to the horizon. The clouds on the very top could use a bit more brightness and maybe a few round edges in the upper layers that are lit by the sunlight. Horizontally, at around the level of her knees up to her skirt, the clouds in the bg could be even darker in places, so you get a bit of overall contrast going (maybe put in another small gap in the clouds in the distance).

great job!

This has some really great moments, but they are pulled down by the overall appearance.

Look up more references of beaches with overcast skies and how sunlight reacts with formations in the sand. Think of what you want to stress with contrast, right now the footprint is very subdued and the clouds are almost as attention-catching as the figure. Also simple gradients can do a lot for a picture,

I don't know if you're aware or not, but russian avant garde artists were actually pretty bummed up about at least one aspect of their art: despite the message and philosophy (and probably also a shitton of drugs) they put behind their art, it was also painfully obvious to most that their precious avant garde could be imitated by a random idiot just scribbling/smearing on the page with no rhyme or reason. And that's actually mentioned in the writings of painters themselves, that's not just a contention of the general public.
So, what exactly are you, my boy? An unsung genius or a random fag who thinks he's hot shit?

Maybe someone will do that but honestly what I would recommend is to not do too much of that stuff because speed comes with practice and you will likely use the limited time as an excuse for shitty lines and mistakes you make. Take your time, analyse, feel the form and put down a solid line, don't just hack around and try to strike gold.

which I'm sure the Russian artists you are talking about would be rather into.

counterpoint.

art's progression in the avant garde is dependent on the art of amateurs and sunday painters. What frustrated avant garde artists through the years was what's happening today on places like reddit's art section. amateur art is held up as exemplary simply because it's easily understood by other beginners. The other type of art being slick "finished" work that has noticeable time put into it but very little in the way of originality, and is usually simply guided by the idea that classicism, and what was done in the past, is better than anything being done today. A message fueling rich clients who think what's reminiscent of the past is what's worth money, since it's a proven formula already.

So what ends up guiding the avant garde is drawing below the level the artist is capable of. I wouldn't be surprised if what inspired Monet to create Impressionism was looking at what amateur artists were doing at the time. Their palettes were probably clumsily colorful, and their brushstrokes unmixed, and it made him angry when that work which was far less technically capable than his was getting attention.

It's the motivation of "If I'm going to be a nobody, I'd at least like there to be a reason behind it, and that reason is that I'm hiding what I'm capable of"

It's the same ethos that guided artists like Gauguin to paint like the Japanese, and Picasso to paint like the Africans. They were seen as "primitive" and "childish" in the way Monet probably saw his fellow lesser Frenchmen painting and considered their colorful work "primitive". Obviously no amateur work done in 1870 survived today, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was the root cause of Impressionism.

>> No.3226995

>>3226991
so like it or not, the work being done in /beg/ is actually the future of art, it's just that it's going to take an artist who does it on purpose instead of by accident.

If those losers in the "LETS START A NEW ART MOVEMENT" thread got a whiff of this theory they'd bark me into a coma, but that's the way art history works, and has always worked. People (including the Impressionists) thought the Impressionists were literally retarded in the same way /beg/ seems to me and you.

>So what ends up guiding the avant garde is drawing below the level the artist is capable of.
If by that, you mean "the more detail / time / work in it, the better", then you have an economic, most unartistic way of measuring quality.

> I wouldn't be surprised if what inspired Monet to create Impressionism was looking at what amateur artists were doing at the time. Their palettes were probably clumsily colorful, and their brushstrokes unmixed, and it made him angry when that work which was far less technically capable than his was getting attention.
Impressionism wasn't invented by Monet alone. And it's way more analytic (take Georges Seurat) than you make it seem. The culture of amateur, sunday painters has only just come to being after WWII, I would say, as the middle class had enough time and financial stability to persue such hobbies. And their dirty color pallets were certainly not as rich and inspiring (that would rather apply to the unconventional, crass colors of expressionism). The impressionism of Seurat for instance was much more influenced by the science of optics.

If you really believe that the motivation was to "hide what [they were] capable of", you are painfully mistaken. Impressionism is an advancement to conventional realism. Monet was taking it even further at the time when his eyesight was deteriorating, which was a very organic, clinical reason behing his style in painting at the time.

>in the way Monet probably saw his fellow lesser Frenchmen painting and considered their colorful work "primitive"
Are you confusing Claude Monet with Eduard Manet?

>but I wouldn't be surprised if that was the root cause of Impressionism.
Theory without evidence is :-[

"Traditional" painting (same materials, new motives) is evolving into the digital age just as well. Julian Schnabel, Andro Wekua, Daniel Richter …
You're just too ignorant to understand how flexibel painting as a medium is and it will endure still.

There's a reason why there is not a single digital fartist in the auctions of Sothebys or represented by major art galleries like David Zwirner and others. Most of the time here in /ic/, I find an unsettling amount of audacity, narcissism and art historical ignorance.

If you trace stuff without having a feeling for the body, it will always show that it's traced. You've used jittery, timid lines which all have the same thickness. The weight of the line can emphasize parts of the body (or object) that are more dense, heavier or darker.

My general advice for you is to stop tracing ^^
There is very little you learn in it.

I'm trying different processing techniques, right now this one is working for me because im the kind to lose interest after a while so i'd have a lot of incomplete work, but this way it makes me focus on one thing specifically, and therefore helping me motivated to do more while also having more detail included.

Pretty much bang on, but I prefer pen tool, plus a bit of hard round brush for details. Lol it's 50 layers organized neatly into folders. I'm a literal crazy person. I had an illustration top out at like 300 layers once. The practical function is not worth it, I just have OCD or something.

Sometimes I work more geometrically, and for that I'll use Illustrator, or if it's personal work I'll use illustrator so I can make prints of any size.

But I heard that Photoshop CC has vectors anyways, so I might have to get into that.

I'm working on a little fan art piece of a ridiculous character from my childhood. Dem Street Sharks- toys were huge in my country and the hammerhead dude was always my favorite.

I'm practicing my Zbrush->Photoshop workflow. ~60% done with this. I'm still a beginner in sculpting so the posing is really fucking stiff. Don't mind the arm on the right. I had a different idea involving chains when I started but he'll be holding an adorable fish bowl with a little goldfish in it. Stupid people love juxtaposition like that...

I think he's standing on some rock on some dock and there are with some waves hitting it. Feed my back.

>Stupid people...

It's depressing that that's what you're thinking about when you make art.

I had to. He was really messing with the focus. I'm really bad at visual focus and composition (if it isn't obvious).

>Stupid people...

You know. You have characters like Rocket Raccoon and it's like "Hohoho. He's like a really adorable raccoon and he swears and shoots lazerz XDDD. What daring juxtaposition! I understand it and therefore it is good! I CLAPPED"

Or I dunno...

I feel like the general public really goes for shit like that. Having a stupid picture with a scary monster with a little girl and they're holding hands or something and it's somehow deep all of a sudden. You know and then you have an edgy text next to it like "Follow your demons >:D" and it gets a ton of likes on what ever.

I'd really like to do stuff like Marek Okon some day and most of the AAA art is done for an audience who aren't actually looking at your piece like it's a piece of art. It's a depiction of "the thing they like". I'm okay with that because I think it's a fun challenge to try and meat those expectations/nostalgia and try to depict it in a way that's challenging/visually pleasing to me.

What the fuck am I even talking about. Time to go to bed. It's always fun to read this shit in the morning when I sober up...

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate thread for this, but here goes. So I have finally accepted that I suck at doing detailed drawings/anatomy. So I was thinking maybe I just need to embrace a simple art style that I can reproduce with relative consistency. What do you guys think though? Should I give up, or is there hope for me?

Yeah, I know what you mean.. Guardians of the Galaxy was exciting, well crafted and affected me emotionally, but I feel dirty for watching it and I know it's all surface level manipulation puked forth by a formulaic process.

When I'm working (comics) I like to think things like: only the most insane and dedicated fan will notice this little detail, or, let's create a complex underlying thematic structure that practically noone will notice. :D Gnight.

Usually, you want to be good at anatomy, then abstract from there.

However, it looks really cute, if a bit stiff.

This could definitely have some value IF you do it digitally. Have clean line art and some solid colors or nice clean rendering/gradients. Doing stuff like this with pencils isn't really appealing, at least to me. I don't know what your actual art goals are so there's that.

Shading is too soft, remember, sharp edges make sharp shadows, while gradual rounding shapes make that kind of a soft shadow you're using. It should be a blend of both
