IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

You're not shitting up threads but the issues in your posts are not clear enough to easily see and your piece is not good enough to warrant a compliment. Please keep posting, even if you don't get critiqued. Also, when you feel comfortable with a fundamental, do not feel afraid to critique others. To get more (you)s, I would suggest pointing out things that seem off in your drawings

Know what? I like it, I can't draw hands...for now.

I think you like to see the wrinkles right? I would avoid that for now. And make the simple boxes in crazy perspectives. After a long period of studies I would make a final one rendered.

Thanks! I lost the ref, it was somewhere in quickposes, but the wrinkles were very strongly visible and I just emulated it.

I am practicing boxes, loomis/proko heads, figure drawing, all that stuff. Trying to "feel" the 3D form, also a bit of hatching and ink.. I just did that render on a quick 20minute-ish drawing cause I just haven't rendered in so long and it's something I also wanna be good at, not an eternal sketcher.

Although the original does lack contrast, it shouldn't be an issue because the light and dark values are quite clearly separated.
You need to pay more attention to how the value of a certain area relates to those around it. Also, your drawing has a gap in light values, you skipped to the highlight directly, where in the reference the highlights are actually very subtle.
The underdrawing is quite good and you mostly nailed the placement of the features. Unfortunately, if you don't have the right difference in values for the features you lose the likeness.
I did a partial paintover to illustrate my point about light vs dark and likeness. For example, you can notice that the eye shine is about the same value as the white of the eye.

I like it. I know your model's eyes are actually quite sunken in, but that's what stands out on your depiction. Perhaps lighten the value on the defining segment and I'd like it even more.

proud of you, anon

remember to do hard edges as well as soft! a combination of the two really helps to define your work. get a pencil/charcoal that is both dark and able to make strong marks. not sure which one you have currently but in the lower left box in your first post, I can see some harder edges there, so that one seems fine, but you could go with a harder one.

I think also you could work larger, I can't tell how big your paper is or how much room you're taking up on the page, but from the marks it looks like you might be drawing smaller. If you draw bigger, it's easier to get a variety of marks/edges.

It's not a complaint, just go the other way and work with blorbs instead of angles for a while. You don't have to stick with it, but the fact that I nailed your influence is the issue. Round things out a bit and get dynamic. I love angular brigshit, but you have no dynamism and throwing in some classical vilppu composition would put you in hogarth territory. Also steal some more mark making from various people, it reads too much like Leyendecker.

How can I learn to place things more accurately?

I put this over the ref and turned opa down and it wasn't too too far off, but I missed lot and I really have a hard time with accuracy and placement. I did measure a lot and use construction and linear layin and stuff.

I really missed the rotation of her right shoulder going back a bit and that made the whole torso too thick, her left elbow should also be retracted back a bit, also made her a lil extra thicc, her left knee should be bent more and only her toes on the ground. tiddy on the right should be higher than the one on the left cause the way her shoulders are. They're also not the same size. I think her right leg should be more diagonal because the weight is on it, the hands also seem small because I must have drawn them zoomed in.

This is something I feel has a fair amount of variance to it, and it could be a matter of personal preference. However, I get the feeling that there's dos and do-nots when it comes to inventing forms to utilize in construction. Alright I'll bite. You are in the noob stage of shading, the feature placement looks pretty good but get some pencil shadings of artists you respect eg https://www.pinterest.com.au/jmcafee0485/andrew-loomis/?lp=true and copy their style. Your pencil strokes are too wandering and tentative. You don't draw like shit, have some line and shading confidence See how they put down pencil firmly, confidentally and block out shades and copy their shading style and you should see the improvement quickly (especially if you can get a sketch that has similar lighting and a similar angle). Good job, but keep working

Maybe these can help some, but I'll try to explain and hope I don't sound like a brainlet.

Like what >>3221955 said, take note of how the edges of the forms look, mostly sharp and defined. That's reflecting the nature of the forms and how the light is interacting with them. Stronger light like in pic related will usually give you more hard edges because the planes of the forms have more light to reflect, the softer the lighting, the less apparent the forms are. The values are very important when it comes to edges. In hard edges, you will generally have a high value difference (or contrast) and sharper planes (the cube, the background vs the shapes, the table vs the shapes), and softer edges will have softer forms (the sphere, the cylinder) showing the gradual turn away from the light. When the values of two forms/planes are very close, the edge seems to "disappear" or are lost (the value of the table against the shadowed plane of the cube, the terminator of the sphere and the plane of the table). Most beginners will draw forms and values with very hard edges and usually ignore the backgrounds and contrasting values, but I can see some areas where you almost have appropriate hard, soft and lost edges. Just need a little more refining and careful observation. You almost have it anon, keep working!

As for your drawing, your line quality could be worked on. Try to plan your line before you draw it, instead of drawing it, erasing, and then drawing it again. construction and anatomy, at first, are essentially the same thing. I recommend Steve Huston's figure drawing book for learning it. (besides Proko's vids) Also, pro tip: make your drawing as best as you can make it before posting. The critique will hurt a little more, but its well worth having a longer list of things to work on.

This is supposed to be Yolandi Visser.
Struggled a lot with nose and lips.
Probably a stupid question, but should I keep practicing like this until I find it easy to get angles and proportions right or should I advance to shadowing etc while doing these?

He is completely FUBAR.
First study in a year or so. I know it's based on a game character, but it was a face I wanted to draw.

I fucked up a lot but most of my time went into the face, how can I properly draw the eyes so that he's looking at you? I know it seems simple to answer but when I got to the drawing board I fucked up and it seemed like every time I drew his eyes he was looking towards the right instead of front.

Any tips? Mostly regarding the face, I know I half assed going with his clothes but wanted to make it seem somewhat more complete. Will post ref next. Also, I think rendering is also a thing I must work on, so I'd be open to that too.

Construction is a MUST for myself. Regrettably I don't "see" the drawing in my mind at all. It's more a feeling; reacting more than deliberate, despite my best attempt. However I do think that because I'm working digitally, maybe I'm spending too much time undoing/ tweaking. Add in my poor working memory, and you have a recipe for drawings that become an asymptote. It may be better for me to just redraw when I get stuck. Greatly appreciate your feedback. Thank you.

Yeah I don't see any process lines or construction. You have to figure out how you see the basic shapes to see if they're off. Once you do that, you don't have to put much effort in to them as long as they're right enough to keep you on track as you work into the drawing. Don't get hung up on them like weebs doing face construction or high schoolers drawing fruit bowls, but let the big shapes and sweeping gestures guide the process into detail. It pays dividends when you get into construction.

I'm struggling to articulate the question, so please pardon my spew. Maybe it's just a skill that comes with time, but my ability to eyeball the proportion of those major shapes (or anything really) seems to always be off by embarrassing amounts.

I'll post an example of what I mean. Over laid the drawing I eyeballed onto the reference and just moved him into the actual proportions /pose. And sad as it is, this is on of my better attempts. It's goddamn frustrating that I can't see that during the drawing process. And then you can only imaged how fucked it gets when just going from imagination.

So if I understand you correctly, in order to fix this issue, I need to work more from the larger shapes first? Like take the negative shape between his legs and use that as a mental measuring stick?

I really want to know what your purpose for that post- if it obviously wasn't constructive, it was you being an asshole for sure. But in the end, I realize anybody can post anything regardless.

I've just had it with people like you who just shit on people like me that want to obviously improve. I avoided art for a few years because I felt I was too shitty to do anything and I took some criticism on /ic/ so harshly. Eventually came back with this year's Inktober that I made some pieces I liked, even posted daily in the /ink/ general and I figured to myself that I wasn't a lost cause, and I posted before the deadline every submission, even getting at least one compliment and some constructive criticism. And I found my passion in drawing again.

get a darker pencil, like 3B is good, and sketch very softly with many long, nice lines, then go over the shape once with a tiny bit more of strength

also printer paper is dirt cheap and it doesn't have lines.. with 10 dollars you can get a pencil sharpener, two 3B's, like 300 A4's and an eraser

the grey eraser is good it doesn't leave shit behind in your paper

From what i see the lighting is fucked and so are the lines and the colors.

The lines are so fucked because Im a super noob at photoshop so to change the color of my originally black lines I selected all of the pixels on the layer and just colored over them.

yeah, definitely seeing improvement! keep an eye on you soft edges, particularly around the cone's terminator shadow

filling in the shading more completely will look better, but that will come with practice and time

good job anon!

Thank you for the crit, anon.
Yeah, I did not feel that much in control with the cone, I think controlling soft edges is harder(hehaheha) than the hard edges.

Can I ask what you mean with "filling in the shading more completely"? English is not my native language, so I sometimes have problems understanding some thinks.

In the areas around your shapes, you've filled in the values really loosely, it's making your shapes get lost and looks a bit messy. Remember, contrasting/differing values of the forms create the edges!

yeah, good on you mate but use Rebelle 2 instead. It is a much superior Watercolor program. Also, the best way to paint, always, is with a real brush, real paint, and a hell of a scanner.

If you guys could point out my mistakes and give me a few pointers on how to improve i'd appreciate it. It's just a sketch so it's not like it took days to make. Thanks in advance!
