not really, only if you're drawing from life.

It can be helpful if you're an absolute beginner and can't distinguish between what you see and what you think you see yet but you should really draw from life whenever possible since cameras distort the image.
It's fine to use photos for reference but copying them 1:1 won't teach you anything except for how to copy photos 1:1 and will just waste a ton of time you could be using to learn how to draw from your mind

if you do a brainless copy just looking at lines and values you wont learn as much as if you question yourself all along the process...

for ex you can learn countless things from this photo..

analyze the planes of the face, terminator on the zygomatic bone.
how to tackle some of the edges...how the bounce light affects the under of the chin, as well as the hair.

interesting insertion of the sternocleidomastoid....

etc...

but thats kinda behind the point... the op is still struggling with basic copying skills....hes just training his eye at this point and he already improved a lot since august.

Also never dropped so hard something like the drawing of Jan 2017 and the last paiting, I spent too much time in those 2 and the results were dissappointment. I think the problem is mostly the Jaw line (Like in the right drawing), I do them too narrow triying to avoid made the face look too manly but instead end up with a Pseudo anime thing that doesn't look that good. Also the eyelashes and eyebrows are fucked up on the right pic.

The improvement i see here is line variance or line thickness. The next thing I would suggest trying is to add more shadows and more levels of value with the lighting; show more individual strands of hair, bones, muscles and the complexity of the deformations in the cloth. It's a challenge as it adds more work to the piece but it's that extra step which really makes it look complete.

I think you've gotten to a good place, what you need to do is think to yourself as to what you've yet to study. Art is all about rendering objects and merging them into a composition. Study everything and all things and your art will improve bit by bit. If you've yet to do Anataomy studies, try that. Think about what you're not confident in creating and focus on that challenge. If you have a had time coming up with ideas on what to create, then try taking passages from books and various descriptive writings and render them visually.

The lines are really great, though it's a tad messy but just those two doesnt give much to go off of. Try using less lines and use shading which will build up the dimensionality of each object.

Well as mentioned i started drawing by doing bargue copies of his human blockout sketches. i posted a lot of these in the last few beg threads. i started out with an elaborate gridocunt and then would reduce that gridcount with every new copy i did. that helped me a lot in getting a graspe of the pencil and the materials and just sitting down and doing something to the best of my ability.

then i also found a workflow for me that works really well when drawing the figure.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCA9o111IH1VD8Kxz0YLn8_A
check out the 10 part figure drawing series on that channel, it helped me a lot.
i also completely changed the way i look at things. i draw from photos because of a lack of life drawing classes near me, but the problem with photos is that they are of course 2d. so the way i looked at them was also very 2dish. what i started to do is basically imagine the human in the photo as a 3d mannequin, with cylinders and boxes. so in my mind i start to rebuild the real perspective that happens in the photo.

pic related, you can see my initial quick construction. if things work well in this stage the drawing will turn out alright almost always. and then i just put the 3d forms i see onto my construction. i basically look at the legs as cylinders for example, so you can see how i made some wrapping lines that made that leg go awayf from us as if we could see inside it from that perspective if it was actually see through.

hope that helps

Please be larping. I genuinely believe I've never seen someone your age or younger who's better (feel free to prove me wrong /ic). I'm 25 and this is suicide fuel

Did you spend the same amount of time on both?
The details/shading is much better in the earlier.
Perspective in new is all kinds of fucked up like her body being in an eye-level view but her head being viewed from the bottom, her arm reaching in front of her body but her sword not moving into the background but still going behind her body.
New's body is just bulky in general for no reason like her calves are asymmetrical and square.

>Did you spend the same amount of time on both?
Yeah, they are just sketches that I do for experiment new things, 2h max in each one.
>The details/shading is much better in the earlier.
I just changed the technique for something more clear, I just think that works better for this kind of body.
The others things are just experimental bullshit that I like to do, try new kind of bodys and stuff like that, I see why you think thats worst because is so diferent but it's not like I abandoned the old style, I just learn a new one.

those kind of works are bad because they have no meaning whatsoever, they just express a level of ability instead of a message. A good work of art has meaning and ability infused together, this one is just a plain realistic woman.

It's more about wanting to call everything a meme because it's the cool and hip word to use. Misusing the word is also way more common outside of 4chan. I'd say it began with calling image macros memes and nowadays people call making just about anything "making a meme".

also keep in mind this is a "best of" because all the shit-tier off proportion mistakes and garbage chickenscratch was probably never scanned in the first place

I like the composition in both.
Though the body trails on the left are more aesthetic, and the colors seems more tightly chosen, there is an improvement in the new one. Mainly anatomy and render. But your proportions are a bit off. For example the head of the male on the right is too big for his body, but not enough to look cartoony like the left one.

Thanks, anon. Appreciate the honest crit there. You're right about the dude's head, but I'm not sure I care to rework it at this point.

As for the composition, yeah I got caught up in fixing the rendering and drawing that I guess I let some of the aesthetic get away from me. I'll see if I can bring some interest back to that part.
