>guy wants a comission from me and keeps asking for 3 years
>i finally decide to work with him just to find out that he cant even pay the amount im asking for one picture
then
>guy keeps spamming my PM with "?" "hey" "hello" "??" FOR A GODDAMN YEAR even if i told him i wont draw a porn of a fucking anime character i dont care about. Seriously - i dont even go to check when i hear a sound of PM on tumblr - im pretty sure its him again
then

>turns out its some really retarded weird crap
then
>guy is a fan of my work
>keeps writing me messages
>one time i dont answer in time
>he writes weird stuff "WHY DIDNT YOU ANSWER ME? DID I SAY SOMETHING WRONG? :/" - something like that
>i try to explain that i wasnt on tumblr during that moment so i didnt see his message
>he still quite butthurt and pissy
>ended up being my hater and talks shit about me behind my back
I mean i already work as an artist and dont have money problems.
But i never did any comissions on tumblr even if im on tumblr for 5 years already.
I just keep meeting utter retards or cringy people who make me afraid to open comissions.
Because i think i will bump to another fucking weirdo and just dont want to write rude messages and turn him into my hater or something

Block the dude(s). If you don't you're almost as crazy as they are, man. Do you really think you should have to put up with shit like that? Pretty much every social media site has a block function for a reason.

I made the mistake of calling this autist 'buddy' at work like I do with most people and in true Cable Guy fashion he comes into my store every single FUCKING day I work now (often multiple times) and considers me his best friend. If I could remove him from my life without experiencing the guilt of his inevitable suicide I would, but I can't so I just endure his ridiculousness and try not to kill myself instead. There are people you'll meet in life online and off that-just a few short decades ago-would have been locked away in a padded room with no sunlight because their unconventional brains make them a nuisance, and yes-a danger-to normal people. The sedative qualities of the internet and television have changed things in that regard for better or worse but luckily you are just a few clicks away from making them someone else's problem if they're not a physical presence.

>Message them a month after sending reference packages and out first conversation.
>Oh, sorry, I overlooked you. I'll get on it.
>Okay, that's cool. They had other commissions so maybe they really were just distracted with other customers.
>Another month passes with nothing from them.
>Send email cancelling my commission
>Get a response within the hour about how they're busier than they thought.

And that's why I'll never commission anyone ever again kek. I mean, I understand that artists get busy, but it feels kind of lame to get forgotten about over your other customers one month and just put on the back burner with no notice a second month. I'll stick to being shitty at drawing until I can just doodle my own stuff, I guess.

DEFINITELY doesn't matter.

Whether your client appears "successful" or "amateur" or "professional" or whatever should be completely immaterial to you, why should you care even a little? From your beef with your previous client it sounds like you'd prefer a more laid back client that keeps to themselves and keeps out of your business anyway. Calm down mang.

>Make an account on furaffinity because I was desperate and poor.
>Notice I don't actually draw porn but generic cute stuff
>Someone PMs me about a commission
>Ask about if it could be a little sexy
>I accept because why not
>Their OC looks like it was taken out of Digimon(Similar to Agumon)
>They send a super candid image of the character as a reference. >Something like the OC standing with a sad face, looking down, dressed in a shirt and baggy pants.
>The person ask me to draw it tall, muscular and wearing a speedo
>Bold they want me to put emphasis on his bulge.
>Alright, so far nothing that weird.
>They ask for a sketch of it before paying.
>I don't usually do that but since I was again, poor and desperate I accepted.
>Send sketch, they quickly replied the bulge was not big enough.
>I confusedly asked how big they wanted it to be.
>They vaguely ask it to be bigger but don't clearly state how big.
>I made it bigger conserving the proportions of the fucking notdigimon.
>Again, the person asks it to make it bigger.
>After the third change, I told them making it even bigger would look retarded because proportions.
>They don't care and ask again to make it bigger.
>I was pissed but made it bigger
>Yet again, they asked it BIGGER
>I said nope and told them I was not into that kind of commissions.

Furries generally pay better, so you could start practicing drawing cute or sexy furries, whichever style works out better for you. When you're ready, hit up that Furaffinity.

They're also willing to pay to see their vanilla or obscure fetishes portrayed.

Tumblr's userbase is more unwilling to part with their money. They want to see art made for free, and a portion of the userbase are only willing pay below 15-20 bucks for a piece with proper line art, coloring and background.

This has let to many artists only asking 10-15 dollars per a well-made piece because they think that's the only price people will agree to go for, and even then people want to ask for more discounts. I've seen people ask an artist for an art trade just to spend 10 minutes in paint in exchange for an artist's multiple hour drawing.

So I think furries would be the better option for you.

Sorry I triggered you guys, but let's be real.

In any other profession shit like this would be called out immediately.

Let's say you hire a guy to do your pluming on contract starting at a certain day and he doesn't show up.
Wouldn't you be pissed that you wasted all that time waiting for him and when the time finally came around he didn't even show up to do any work?

I'd sure as hell be pissed as fuck.

How would you know that he's actually done the work?

Anyone can easily say "Yes, work has begun" over an email without any proof.

If OP really did start on the project, it would've been so fucking simple to just send his client a status update.

Like I said, when a contract starts on a specific date, people usually except the work to begin on that date and not 3-4 days later or whatever.

> he also hadn't been payed a dime, meaning he had no obligation to anyone.
He accepted the contact didn't he (I assume signed it)? You are held accountable for the work the minute you do that, even before they pay you.

Btw not trying to be an ass, but employer literally means "the guy who's paying you for work". When you freelance and accept a contact, your clients/costumers EMPLOY you for that work. Basically they employ your services, hence making them your employer.

>> No.3209651

worst commission story is people saying they can't wait to commission you or work with you again and then never get in contact with you when your commissions are open

>> No.3209787

>>3206395
Both you and your client are awful.

Your client was a fucking retard for not specifying in his contract that he needs daily updates.
As for you: since you're trying to be a professional, then you should knew that this sort of thing is a standard in concept art industry.

Concept art, unlike furry porn commissions, is a serious business. It's completely normal for a game company to need daily updates.
One thing is that every employer likes to know that their project is progressing smoothly; it doesn't matter if are you a gardener, a cook, a programmer or an artist.
But most important reason is that what needs to be designed, artistic direction the game is taking or setting can change. For example they could realize in the middle of your contract, that, i dunno, water level that you were designing props for is a bad idea. Then it would be a waste to have you work on harpoons and shit, when you could make at least sketches of other things. Or, if they wanted to terminate your contract earlier, they would know exactly how much you did and how much they should pay you and maybe they could find a use for sketches that you made so far. Or they could tell you "hey, I like what you did on that sketch; could you design more props like that, rather than what we asked for in the beginning?"

To send them an update would take you 5-10 minutes at the end of the day. That would be a problem ONLY if you're not treating your job as a, well, job.

To be honest I also despise this kind of thing - I didn't become an artist to work from nine to five and to have someone constantly looking over my shoulder. But if you're like that, then you should realize that concept art isn't for you.

>first contract ever
>doing pixel art for some online game
>easy chill guy to work with at first, no problems
>first and second payment everything okay
>powering through animations, tilesets, and character portraits
>everyone is loving it
>after that the guy starts becoming extremely vague
>has no idea what he wants
>the game is making money in alpha already so i keep working by his vague direction
>weeks go by
>no payment because he's not sure what he wants
>he runs into a bug he can't fix in a week and features he doesn't know how to code
>end up having to help him code the game
>fix the map issue in 20 minutes
>implement the dungeon generator in an hour
>fix some exploits in the server and client code
>he gets super salty and passive aggressive after that
>secretly hired another artist shortly after
>but keeps asking me for work that he rejects
>no updates for weeks
>community hype dying rapidly
>people on the forums start arguing with him to put my new work in the game
>finally reveals he replaced all my work and terminates me publicly
>knew this shit was coming by his attitude
>testers hate the new art and want me back
>anyone who mentions it gets permabanned
>game only has about 200 active players and everybody is wondering why everything has changed and people are getting banned
>forum quickly shutdown for "maintenance" that never ends
>server patched to shadow mute certain words
>nobody knew who the new artist was
>server shutdown by the end of the week, no refunds
>he walked away with a few thousand and probably didn't even pay the other artist

draw lewd, make price sheet, post it on porn threads.

Did the guy just hold a secret grudge against you or something?

No payment "because he's not sure what he wants" isn't a fucking excuse btw LOL. If someone commissions you their uncertainty isn't your problem, especially if he's making money, himself.

this
should have been a red flag desu, consider asking for prepayment when you see something like that

Sounds like he his ego took a hit when the artist guy kicked his ass in programming. He felt that his authority was challenged and had a immature reaction to it.

Don't outshine the master.

“Being defeated is hateful, and besting one’s boss is either foolish or fatal.
Most people do not mind being surpassed in good fortune, character,
or temperament, but no one, especially not a sovereign,
likes to be surpassed in intelligence.”

That's kind of what I was thinking. It's hard to believe someone would throw a possible once in a lifetime opportunity away over something like that. If I was ever in a similar position I'd have done everything in my power to keep the dude around, not tried to force him out, what the fuck lmao. I guess admitting you're a pathetic excuse for a code monkey is a tough pill to swallow. Imagine being so autistic you manage to turn the most fortunate circumstance you could ever have in that context (discovering one of your guys is a multi-talent) into the catalyst for which you sabotage your own project and ruin everything for everybody. Sad!

Happens more often then you think, and not just with amateurs.

Many big triple a studios end up sabotaging their own product with this kinda shit too.

I'm this anon, never even got paid, band never got back to me and I wasted 7 months on a project for pennies.

Was the biggest mistake I ever made and it was caused by my (((tutor))) taking advantage of me, it's now crippled me with taking on commision because now I'm afraid I'll get screwed over again. I'm currently looking into contracts so this can't happen again.

Sorry dude, I was the guy trying to talk you through it. Sad to hear it was just as bad as I'd feared. Your tutor is a piece of garbage lol. If it's any consolation you have a pretty decent portfolio piece now. Hopefully you're still friends with that girl despite your mutual fuck up.

Thank you for the help, yeah were still good, but we have a mutual hatred for the course leader, we joke about it now but it still obviously has a bad effect.

This is why I stopped doing commissions. I'm just not good enough to charge enough money to weed out the idiots and weirdo's (triple digits) and I just get exhausted dealing with people like that - and I don't want to be known as the "block-queen" either - so I just dropped it. And I make enough in my day job to not be in NEED of doing shitty porn commishes, so I can just do shitty porn for my self.

Damn anon, I remember you.
This really makes me sad man.
Don't let this get to you, set up some stuff to save your ass from stuff like that in the future and get out there again. Your dedication alone is already a worthy trait.

>Both you and your client are awful.
No? The client is clearly in the wrong. Simply ask for daily or twice-daily updates, politely, and you'll receive them. If the person contracting him wants to play art-director he needs to learn to do his job too, which requires more than being a wannabe alpha jackass.

>faggot wants me to draw porn of a character
>tell him i don't want to
>keeps messaging me
>block him
> messages me with new profile

i am a poorfag and just recently got a mac so i can do digital art, doing commissions is my worst fear because they want me to draw high quality digital shit while i can only do decent sketches.

>> No.3214430

kek i don't even charge money for requests because i don't have much faith in my work and thus don't want to set prizes high.
