western artists using japanese manga style? Yeah it bothers me too.
>inb4 post work/ur just buttmad for being bad
Things not where they're supposed to be bothers people, if you want to ignore that and go ahead worshipping western anime artists then nobody is stopping you. But what you're doing is wrong, and it's important to know that.

Why? The japanese artist utilizes manga art to represent something inherently japanese, and relating to something about daily japanese life.

The western artist does not know this, cannot know this, and so there needs to be a good reason for using anime style that can be read in the work itself. In the pic you posted, there is none. It is stolen and redone just for the sake of making something that 'looks cute.'

It incenses your common sense and sense of standards. That's why it bothers you. Many people willingly ignore the allure of anime style because it is important to make a statement that you are born in the western world and thusly you are a western artist and will not try to be something else, many people are. You may or may not agree with that philosophy. But if you do, its obvious why shit like that pisses you off.

>> No.3201558

>>3201556
Even worse is when the western artist has obviously consumed so much japanese media that they make art that stems from that influence but transgresses further by trying to depict something that they, an outsider, understands about japanese life. THAT is the most cringeworthy shit out there. And you know who you are.

>> No.3201567

>Why? The japanese artist utilizes manga art to represent something inherently japanese
Manga style art is just japanese artists ripping off Osamu Tezuka by proxy or directly and he was ripping off Walt Disney.

>> No.3201569

>>3201567
Thats fine. Tezukas works didnt yet convey anything japanese. He was burdened by keeping up with peers across the water. The artists of today have none of those burdens. So whether or not they ripped off, the motivations are not even close to the same.

>The japanese artist utilizes manga art to represent something inherently japanese, and relating to something about daily japanese life.
Why is that even an issue? They can do the same thing with typed word or by spoken word etc. It's a tool. Sure, they may have invented it in some form, but that doesn't make it exclusive to them, much like their language can be learned and used.

>The western artist does not know this, cannot know this, and so there needs to be a good reason for using anime style that can be read in the work itself.
So supposedly if some jap draws a manga about some daily shit in Japan culture then non Japanese simply cannot comprehend it? Sure, some references can be over peoples heads, like memes, politics, history and other shit. But like with western, or ANY for that matter, references and such you can go on the internet and learn about them.

>It is stolen and redone just for the sake of making something that 'looks cute.'
Like Japs don't draw meaningless cute shit for the same reasons. Because every single person that can be identified bearing a heritage of a certain country is bound to be the exemplar of its culture, right?

That ugly fucking Tumblr art style. The one where it looks like they're purposefully trying to make shit as fucking ugly a short possible? You know the one. The huge fucking noses, how they make everyone have dark or tan skin even if the character is white as fuck, how they make everyone look so chunky and have those big, fat arms even if they're supposed to be a skinny young girl or a twink, they always give every character a man jaw no matter what. I fucking despise this style with every fiber of my being. It's like they're not bothering at all to make their art look any good. Right. The last time I saw isekai bullshit, it's about japanese life. I also remember that Junji Ito never lifted from western inspiration.

> The western artist does not know this, cannot know this, and so there needs to be a good reason for using anime style that can be read in the work itself. In the pic you posted, there is none. It is stolen and redone just for the sake of making something that 'looks cute.'
Does everything you see have to convey inplicitly or explicitly? No wonder how you're inb4'ing post work, and I'll go out on a limb and call you're not doing anything cus it wouldn't mean anything. Will the same apply to eastern artists if they try out bande dessinée/belgian comics? Will that destroy the representation of something wholly italian/french/belgian?

> Many people willingly ignore the allure of anime style because it is important to make a statement that you are born in the western world and thusly you are a western artist and will not try to be something else, many people are.

Just try to broaden the artists that you use for inspiration, in my case I was a huge Hirohiko Araki fan when I started but I knew that just copying his works and basing myself would lead me to being a shit since I barley knew anatomy and I certainly wouldn't be able to draw something like the pic here from the outset.

So to fix that I just started focusing more on the basics and realism, after all of that It helped change things mostly for the better. If you're already "good", at least for yourself, then I really have no advice other than just trying to look for other artists to copy and emulate.

Here's a tip if you want to be a successful artist:

"Always do the opposite of what /ic/ says."

Not really-but really. You have to keep in mind the majority of this board are crabs who aren't going to make it and they just want to nitpick and pinch others with their little crustacean claws.

That said, the problem isn't the tumblr/calarts style so much as it's the people and the culture with which it's associated.

Just keep your political opinions to yourself, don't jump on stupid bandwagons like drawing obese brown humanoids with 37 genders and armpit hair and so on and you're golden. Keep working hard at improving your art. Have fun and stay positive and you will make it.

>> No.3207756

Don't change your style anon, these people wouldn't know appeal if it hit them over the head with it. Your art is cute and has a charm, if you try to make it more realistic you will lose that. This style was made popular by cartoons, which is why so many people have it similar looking, but there are differences that make it a style. Work of 2 manga artists would both look anime, but their styles will be different if that makes sense.

As long as you have good fundementals your style doesn't matter, stick with what feels right for you.

You should actually maintain a presence on as many different sites like that as possible.

tumblr, da, twitter, instagram, drawcrowd. It's all good.

I think there's a way to update them all at once too but I'm not sure. You want to put yourself out to as wide an audience as possible and you have no need to limit yourself in that regard. Just make sure you don't let your idle socializing get out of control either. You don't want to completely neglect any fans you might get but don't get caught up in the tangle of their lives either.

How come it's so popular? You could easily do more interesting stuff by ditching lines or adding wilder colors. Like there's just so much of artists that do just this and nothing else.
