>> No.3198442

>>3198436
Your newer one definitely has an edge when it comes to composition and "medium" (i.e. the brush strokes). The pose that isn't dead-on is much more interesting to look at too, and I'd say that's an improvement. On the other hand, I don't know how much I can speak for your actual construction, which looks like it could use some work still. Despite the fact that you've ditched the stereotypical anime style, it still feels like you've got some symbol drawing going on. Maybe that's just me. But hey, for 7 months you've definitely covered some ground.

>> No.3198456

>>3198442
I've been wanting to get better at anime but I suck at line art, I've fallen into a more painterly style which comes from my desire to improve in art over all and it has bled into my more stylized art and I don't really mind. I see what you mean about the criticism; I am working on my edge control and I think that the appearance of symbol drawing comes from the low contrast in the newer one. I have a problem of having too much contrast or not enough.

They are all from mirror, I don't know honestly, maybe it's because around 2014 I was doing a lot of studies, then around 2015 i spent a long time without drawing at all, also I'm not as good at painting directly with color I guess. Looks like you got lucky with that one in 2014 is all. Comparing your "best" work over the years can be misleading because a lot of the time you might not even be aware of what made it look good in the first place, it's an outlier and you shouldn't judge yourself based on it. It looks like you made real progress in understanding the structure of the face and rendering, especially between 2016 and 17.

>> No.3199161

2014 looks the best because it looks like it was more planned out and closer to being finished, but also doesn't use color and has more 'cheats' like hiding parts of the head in blurry darkness or under facial hair. Also, the light sources are totally different.

you can draw well, but you need to work on your edges. 2014 looks good because the balance of soft and hard edges brings the focus to the eyes. 2017 has very hard edges on the outlines of forms, and very mushy blending inside them. contrast everywhere, focus nowhere.

Hello friend the reason why your art isn’t making money is because it’s a flat head on portrait without skin color. It’s got s dark theme and I’m going to tale a leap of faith and make the assumption that you do not have a thriving: Deviantart, Instagram, Artstation, Tumblr or facebook page. Nor that you have put in effort to promote yourself om said pages. You have also probably not gone to conventions / art related events such as GEC, CTN.

What you want to do is make a solid foundation of content which appeals to people. The hysteircal person would cry Fan Art but simply making appealing content is enough. Like: Noah bradleys bright environments, Tyler Edlin, Loish, Ilya, Sakimichan (Reeeeeeee I know), Zeronis. You don’t have to do what they do but all of these guys make bank. Why not apply some of their tricks to your tastes?

Thanks for a detailed reply, it really means much. I'm currently at the point of my life when I don't really know if I should continue to advance my skills the way I did earlier; and the whole situation makes me sad.

Sadly, it isn't in my power to attend art-related conventions, because I live overseas in russian Mordor. Money is a problem here, especially for a student.

However, I do have DA, Tumblr and VK (russian Facebook) accounts, and I update them every time I really like what I've drawn. Will Instagram and Artstation make any difference on a big scale and should I even focus on a big scale from a current point of view?

Is the pic I've attached better in terms of color palette? I've noticed that people like it better than the last one.

Overall, thank you very much.

Despite all that fancy stuff it looks flat. It's too dark also. Main focal point should be on her face, not that thing on the left. Try to work on interesting lighting use it to give your work some character, bring attention to main points like figure or in this case face or facial features. Try looking how professional artists use lighting.
>>3200318
This also looks flat. Especially hair, lips area on the far side if the face, nose bridge area. I don't know if this intentional, but that areola-crown thing is completely out of perspective and doesn't work at all. Also neck needs to be brighter with this lighting, even with hair and collar around it, there still will be lighter areas. I think you should work harder on lighting, also spend more time observing, look on references, photos with similar angles, look how lips are shaped, how shadow can add more depth, stuff like this. Observe and compare, use more references, there's nothing wrong with it.

I would say there are few things that I have done, that helped me very much in those 3 years, thought I stopped drawing for a half year every year so my growth was bit stunted.

1. Watch your favorite artists and learn anything you can from them, techniques, color schemes sometimes even the feel or the flow of their artworks. Build your visual library as much as you can (Pinterest is your best friend in this)/

2. Draw. Do something you are good at and add a challenge.(I'm good at faces, so I drew a full body, hence the wonky legs)

3.Always take a notice at the feel of your drawing and make the viewer feel it. do whatever it takes/

Idk if this is the right way, but it helped me.

Pic is one of my earlier drawings (I know the anatomy sucks hard), but at that moment I mostly cared about the feeling it was going for

Friend, I suggest you draw anime girls for one hour per day from now on. If that makes you happy and enjoy this. That’s your reward time. Your progress is honestly not optimal but on a positive note you have overcome a lot of beginner problems.

In essence if you want to impeove steadily as an artist (Because you aren’t at the moment). You’re just trying random things and seeing if you get lucky.

Perspectice, Anatomy, Photostudies (No color picking, Make it as accurate as possible). Greyscale your reference image and paint it in black and white.
The more accurate you can get it the better you get at observing and recreating surfeces and objects in the software.

Recommending you more different fundamentals to study or telling you to quit drawing manga girls would both be pointless. If you don’t like this advice just ignore it. No skin of my back

STOP AVOIDING IT. Just slowly work through basics. Don't overload yourself and keep drawing for fun. You will love yourself for the studies. You and I have similar tastes, so I know this. Dark souls, plague doctors, and I think Creepy Susie? We have similar guilty pleasures. So I know that you want to draw all this cute and cool shit. So study. You can draw cooler shit sooner. Honestly I think Loomis only goes so far. I could only stomach him up to the realistic head construction of Fun with a Pencil, sorry Loomis fags. I'd recommend the first ~2 lessons of Draw a Box, and to grind them pretty hard, and from there it's trial and error. Find a YouTube channel or a book you jive with. I love Steve Huston, for instance, but a lot of his amazing lessons are behind a paywall on NMA (he has a full 3 hour lecture for head drawing on YT tho). I think that being attached to an artist you are learning from matters, so even though some people might not see him as great, I might be able to learn more from Sinix than Sycra (lol) or anyone else who tries to teach more than Sinix. Also, of course you have to study the art you want to draw like, too.

Anyway, don't give up Anon, art is hard and part of the journey is figuring out how to travel.

Designing things that are appealing literally just comes down to having variety in your shapes (small medium large) and have the all the shapes make the eye flow through the image (composition). Learning how to draw accurately can make your drawings more believable (which can add some appeal in a technical sense), but it won't necessarily make your drawings appealing from a design sense. /ic/ is not a scam, you're just shit at drawing with shapes.

Since your so early in the digital art game, I think giving you advice to improve in the right direction will help you more than critiques. First off, the closer you can get digital to feel traditional is better. Get a tablet and tape sketchbook paper on it, get a Cintiq with a textured screen, do whatever you have to do to get comfortable.
Second of all, the biggest thing you need to understand is form. Life drawing is pretty much an ideal way to learn this. Grab a real Rubix cube or any box that's as close to a cube as you can get and draw that thing from 5 angles 5 times. Do the same with cylinders, and if you do this every day from you will learn how to draw simple forms in a month. Once you have drawn hundreds of boxes and cylinders you will be able to "feel" form and know how to easily add it later, allowing you to be able to start with gestural shapes first and not get stuck. For learning to draw anime and coloring look for "Kienan Lafferty" on Youtube. He will teach you how colors work and how to draw with easy to work with shapes that can still be applied to League of Legends tier artwork. Follow his advice and as long as you do your own studies of good artists and real life you will 100 percent get better.
The final and most important thing: Stay off /ic/ when you're learning this stuff, take 1-2 month breaks. The most I've ever improved was when I stopped going here to figure things out for myself. This place is too toxic like >>3202310 said. It's hard enough learning something without trolls trying to delude you and give you wildly different advice.

That's true. I gotta start using refs. I'm not sure why I have such an aversion. I think it's the years of being told it's cheating but I really need to get over that, but thank you for the input though. It really solidifies something I need to work on and get out of my comfort zone or I'll never improve... And drawing blind is a great way to put it.

Always start with clumps of hair and when they look characteristic enough you can proceed to detail them, choose some specific areas to do so depending on you composition and main light, don't details all the clumps, you can use the smudge tool combined with the scattering setting to brush away some far areas and create contrast.

Highlights are very important before you detail hair, always try to make them follow the form of the head.

That said feel free to go find and experiment with some brushes in order to find something that suits your process, For instance In procreate I love to use the smoke brush, you can do some really nice sfumato hair with it.

Sometimes I feel that I nailed the thing I'm doing, the rest of the times is ugh

One of my struggles is that I don't find the balance between coloring and my line art, like, I really like to try detailed lines, but when I slap the colors in they kill the details, I've seen that cell shading works fine with it, but I like things more rendered so...

Also, I like doing comics, but since Uni I haven't had the time to do more, just until recently that I graduated that I have a lil more time, I've been doing a couple of them to test paneling and storytelling, and dang, I planned better how to do them 5 years ago than now, at least back then I could do 3 pages in a row, now I struggle to put the idea down hahahaUGH

Try to relax anon, you must've put less pressure on yourself while drawing your earlier drawing, and it shows. The new drawing, while being so concerned with anatomy and values you forgot to relax, and so it has come out stiff, therefore less appealing.

Also be careful to draw both eyes the same size, in perspective they should only ger horizontally shorter, not small all the way round. I think you have a lot of potential.

From the looks of it you are still struggling drawing bodies, and it's letting you down causing the proportions to be wrong and the drawing to be stiff.
