This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make anime works in-between their studies, however, all forms of stylization is welcome here. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, remember to have fun because I told you to.

The only way for the design to work where the point is completely flat is if it meets the rest of the blade further down. https://youtu.be/PGFW4japOoI?t=786

Hey /ic/, I recently took up an art class specifically for Japanese anime style drawings and despite this being the first time drawing semi-seriously, I've found that I greatly enjoyed the process. I want to improve even more on my own but /beg/'s guides seem really intimidating and I'm feeling at a loss as to how to apply those techniques to drawing in anime.

Sorry for the blogpost, I hope you guys don't have a terribly bad opinion of anime only artists...

it's actually quite refreshing to see a drawing like this. My advice for you would just be to keep drawing, although that may sound redundant. Also, I know drawing with pen might have an "appeal" to it, but it's actually really helpful to draw lightly in pencil. Your drawing also seems like you're pressing too hard with your pen, giving you rough very scratchy lines. Try to draw lighter in pencil and take it slow. Look at a lot of appealing anime faces you like. Just looking at a lot of faces will help you get a good feel for what makes an anime face "attractive" Like the distance from one eye to the other, the placement of the nose and mouth. These things are really important and small changes can drastically change the outcome of the final image. Obviously though, the most important thing I would say is mileage and just drawing a lot. Anyways, I hoped this helped. And good luck!

Good anatomy, decent perspective, nice detail vs. space in your lines, and even popping everything out with value vs. white (contained by lines) is good.

I'm gonna give you a critique because you're SO close that I just feel it would be a lost opportunity for you not to know this.

The difference between this (your current work) which is good, but there are thousands of people who can do this, and someone who stands out at line work, is one thing.

And I see it all the time, also with people who do rendered (colored/shaded) work.

Your lines are too repetitive. They are too consistent. Try for some long vs. short lines, some straights vs. curves. Don't have your lines turn out to be all roughly the same length, or bend around the same spots, or have too many bends and curves all over the body distracting from the focal point. Etc.

Have some thick vs. thins, curves vs. straights, long vs. shorts, sharp vs soft angles, etc. Just push up your contrast.

That's literally THE difference between everyday pro (where you're at) and STANDOUT pro. (where you will be with this advice.)

The same goes for rendering. There are a lot of guys who are admired for painting really well, but there are a LOT of them, and they don't stand out because of 1 thing usually. They render everything too consistently.

The foot gets the same amount of shading as the face. Instead, just like with the lines, you can organize your level of rendering and shading based on focus etc. like frazetta, and it makes that extra special difference, the difference between a pro, and a special stand out pro. The one in a blue moon kind.

This has been one of the things I personally studied and just realized/noticed on my own and I hope it has been helpful to you and to everyone reading it.

An example would be if you were wondering why an artgerm is good, but he can't render/shade as appealing as frazetta. That's literally why.

Same goes with your linework vs. Toriyama.

Part II

You'll even notice that your drawings are more accurate anatomy-wise etc. than much of toriyama's work or etc. And yet his work stands out as appealing.

If you can keep in mind that appeal is the most important thing, than you don't have to be perfect at anatomy or etc. whatever else. I'm just adding this last part to illustrate the importance of how it makes the difference between pro and stand out pro.

The lines are perfectly fine. I think this critique you're giving is based on how you'd prefer it to look rather than how well it's made (you know what I'm saying?). And for the record, no. I completely disagree with you. My advice isn't about preference, it's for the purpose of making it even 'more well made'. Guys, this is gonna sound autistic, but how do I make my artworks more appealing? I've been focusing on technique for so long that I completely forgot about what makes a drawing actually charming. The best I can think of is slapping some smiles on my faces, but I know there's more to it than that. Preferably some SFW related stuff, I know I can get some easy points for sexual content.

Pic kinda related.

You're right, there isn't much there to improve, that's why I gave such specific advice. I could have pointed out some minor issues but felt he'd benefit most from the contrast advice.

It's okay if you don't see it or get it. Unless you're the artist himself, I don't have any reason to explain it to anyone else. I wrote that critique for him. And an artist at his level is most likely going to get what I said.

I don't mean that to be mean or as an insult or anything, you've been really polite and I appreciate that a lot. But that critique was meant for that guy specifically, not for me to be debating with another anon about whether or not my advice was good. Definitely need to see your art to answer that question. But as said here, >>3193769, the answer is almost always some form of contrast.

It could also be using more rounded forms, or just content that's appealing, certain exaggerations. Better silhouettes. But it's hard to tell which you need without seeing your art.

If pic related was your art then the issue would not be the linedrawing for example, but it would be the values of your colors.

If you made that drawing in grayscale you'd see how the coat and the skin are both a little too closely related value-wise and it creates a bit of confusion for the eye since they're both relatively flat. (two tones on the coat for shading). Even if they weren't flat it could still create a problem.

Not that it's a terrible piece. Once you get to a certain point the only difference is whether or not you can make something look 'even better' not necessarily that anything is wrong/needs fixing.

>> No.3194254

Oh, I didn't make that drawing, but I used it as an example to show that I'm looking to make my drawings more... emotionally charged? Obviously the drawing isn't the most professional but it definitely conveys the feelings of bewilderment and urgency, plus the overall movement just seems very appealing. My analysis is probably more subjective than anything, but I prefer it over a drawing that's professionally done yet lifeless, if that makes sense.

I guess I'm starting to find the answer to my question, but are there any resources out there that describe how to convey emotion in terms of the flow of a figure and expressions? Maybe there's a more appropriate thread for these kinds of questions.

Sometimes animation books touch on the subject. That's about all I can think of. I think you're doing the right thing trying to answer it yourself in the meantime.

What I do is similar, I've been doing it for years. I look at my favorite art and ask 'why' is this more appealing than most other artists.

Good artists to study will be a bit subjective, because you'll have different tastes, but whoever you pick will most likely be a top notch artist, even if your tastes are slightly different. Meaning you'll still be learning good stuff that reaches a lot of people regardless.

When it comes to learning appeal I usually am drawn to masters of composition. Waterhouse, Amano, Frazetta, etc.

Appealing is not as vague as some people think. When trying for appeal you're looking for the rule not the exceptions. Your pic is actually the perfect example of how to do it right. It has a larger contrast between large and small, straights and curves.

Different kinds of curves, not so similar to each other than they distract. And a clear focal point, framed by dark vs. light, and big vs. small.

One angle vs. another is also used there.

And of course you could also say 'you had a point but it wouldn't make that big of a difference'. Which wouldn't be true, but would be a sort of more humble way to still keep arguing with me.

I'm ready for that, but also know that I'm not interested in a debate and I'm done arguing back.

your bodies and poses lack flow and rhythm. you know anatomy technically (for the most part, save a few bizarrely glaring examples, you're curiously bad at feet for someone who loves asanagi) but the execution is messy and feels haphazard when compared to the faces where you intentionally smooth over landmarks for the sake of silhouette and shape design (fancy way of saying you draw very anime faces), a thing you're doing the exact opposite of with the body. this leaves your heads and bodies at a stark contrast stylistically

you either need to pay much closer attention to the shapes and silhouettes of the body parts you draw or change the way you draw faces cause they aren't currently working together like they should

It's good to have ambition anon, but you need to slow down and properly learn the little things, no small study is a waste of time so long as you learn from it, and it's additions of all the little things you learn during them that make every great piece look great.
Pic related is a quick lighting example of what you could have done here >>3193350 and >>3193511

It takes time to learn how different objects reflect light, and how that light bounces around the piece onto surfaces behind direct light.

Do small lighting studies of individual objects made from different materials, you'll gain better understanding of how to structure bigger pieces and actually satisfy your ambition, right now you're trying to run before you can walk.

As frustrating as it is, you can't skip or rush learning.

Yah but in this case there is no 'correct way' to show you. If I did my own interpretation of where you should have used long lines and short lines, straights vs. curves, I'd just get a ton of people arguing with me.

In this case I'm showing you how to make something 'better'. Not showing you you did anything wrong.

Anyway, you're welcome. I took a lot of crap just making that point. And even though you may not think it's an epiphany, when you try to incorporate it into your art, you're going to realize its extremely powerful, and has the ability to take you to the next level. That's what I believe.

And I wouldn't have gave that advice if I didn't understand it. No offense and of course no one will believe it, but I have more experience than you do.

People on ic can't recognize that because some of us don't go around showing off. I didn't make that post to be a jerk, but because I really wanted to help.

i tried to change stuff while keeping it inline with your style (not perfect, i know) to hopefully get more at what i think the others in this thread have been trying to say. i also tried to clean up some of the parts where i was confused by what was going on so apologies for probably also misinterpreting some of the things you were going for.

also also the figure felt a little off balance to me so i rotated them a bit. neat trick i learned years ago for relatively static poses (read: not runny/jumpy/actiony) is that you can drop a line straight down from the clavicle parallel to the force of gravity to get a good sense of where the center of their weight is. hope i was able to help! (and if not, hopefully i wasn't too annoying)

No one here has any idea what they're talking about. None of us are going to make it.

One could claim that if none of us make it, we've all made it already.

I don't know too much about digital line art, but perhaps you could push the line weight more to imply perspective, kind of like you did with the left foot.

If I'm going to be perfectly honest after looking at this thread overall I don't particularly believe in the over analyzation saying how you "didn't like this" or "didn't like that" critique is critique, yes, but an artist is an artist. They choose how they want things to be. In my opinion basic concepts of a drawing shouldn't be commented on if the artist doesn't ask for you to comment on them. I'm not sure if that really has occurred here but I would rather prevent that from happening if it didn't already.
