Kind of a silly question and I'm sure the answer is just "look at more shit" but what do you do with hands/arms?

Legs are easy since they do follow rules of support and motion so its pretty easy to decide where they go. But you can do anything with hands. My default pose in reality involves my hands in pockets like a beta faggot, or holding them against something. Not exactly exciting or interesting, and it feels weird just throwing them about in the air for no reason, doesn't seem like a natural pose at all.

I'd say you're limiting your arm movement that way and it isn't recommened. It's ok, you don't actually have to draw from your arm and shoulder at all times, but at the very least try to do the basic exercises each day while lifting your arm.
Drawings on cups might help you to understand perspecive better actually. Don't feel bad about it, draw through.

why? because it's white light, it doesn't produce a significant amount of heat and doesn't consume much electricity.

>>3162016
you say realistic painting but I am guessing you dislike the kind of realistic soft rendering that exists, just block in your stuff like Sargent or Zorn do. if you're talking about realistic drawing in general, that's kind of an oxymoron, as any good drawing is atleast based loosely on realism and informed on it, no way around learning to draw without learning realism (doesn't mean you have to be able to draw perfect russian academic charcoal drawings to be able to draw lolis, but it sure might help)

>>3164570
short answer: practice (but this is probably not going to help you)
long answer: rendering is a process, you first block in, then soften your edges where it is needed, there are some videos on edges in painting, look for em since I think 4chan is kinda gay and doesn't let you link shit.

>>3165393
not really, you have to do it manually, try going over it with the brush instead of the magic wand, maybe is less troublesome that way.

>>3166509
The horizon line is always on the middle, its a synonim of eye level.
there's, however, only one case where the eye level is not on the middle, and that's why you have to consider working from pictures, since said pictures can be crops of a big picture.
but if you're working from real life or you're trying to replicate a point of view drawing then you'd always place it on the middle.

>>3166884
The sterno-cleido-mastoid insertions and origins are where the name indicated, it originates from the mastoid process, which is below your ear, its the origin of the zygomatic arch, inserts into the pit of the neck (at the tip of the sternum, between the clavicle) and at the top of the clavicle. sterno = sternum, cleido = clavicle, mastoid = mastoid process.

I reccomend anatomy for sculptors.

if your hand aches go see a doctor, you might have developed some carpal tunnel issue or tendoditis.
in general, it has to do with posture, how strong you hold your tools, rest and temperature changes. so keep a good posture, hold your tools softly, use gloves and don't let your hand get cold after a long session of drawing and most importantly, take rest periodically (remember, rest doesn't mean playing games, let your hand rest)

the gesture line is supposed to aid you to be able to construct the body in such a way, but yes, whatever simple method you can use and then develop into a more complex thing is useful for you works.

>>3174108
get the idea of digital working just like traditional, it won't happen.
just like how oils are different from working with inks and such, digital is just a tool that you have to learn to use.
aside of that, do some experimentation yourself and find something you feel kinda comfortable with.

>>3176967
experimentation, the markers are just a tool just like any pencil would be.
depends on what you wanna do with them too, some values I am guessing.

it's a weird thing with pens since you can't go for overhand, but just do a normal tripod and don't rest your arm on the paper, that's it, some people use their pinky for stabilization or the knuckle of the pinky (I do this myself)
it works for the stylus too so that's an advantage, you do rest it however, whenever you need to draw a little detail, you lift your entire hand (including said pinky) when drawing really big lines too

>>3180095
if you're drawing with overhand then work on an horizontal surface, you won't be able to rest your arm that way. if you're working with pen or stylus then try doing what I said above, take breaks if needed, exercise too.

cups are fine, if you're having trouble getting distracted by details then give a look to keys to drawing.

Is that your work? If so i think you should use a harder brush. The softness makes your forms hard to read. Start with the hard brush, use large, simplified forms to represent your planes. Only let yourself use two or three values for this step. Now that you have major areas of shadow and light mapped out, you can go in and work these areas further. You should push your values more as well, id assume areas like under the nose are quite darker than what you have down. Sorry i dont have any painting references for you.

The horizon line is not going to always be in the middle.
Remember the horizon line is eye level and once you choose to place it all that really indicates is that if an object is above the horizon line you look up at it. and vice versa for below.
you can arbitrarily place the horizon line anywhere in the picture or even outside of it as long as you use perspective in relation to it.

I wouldn't focus on learning every single muscle unless you are doing purely anatomical drawings.
That being said there are large muscle groups that you should focus on and learn most of.
there are over 600 muscles in the human body and id say if you want to be able to draw a human from any angle know the right 100 of them and you can do it convincingly. generally the important part is understanding how they interact with one another.
hampton should cover most of the important ones

nothing wrong with that, books are just a shortcut of methods to simplify realism into marks down on paper, copying from other artists is just as useful.

I like those works myself, they're technically separating muscle, fat and the big masses of the body for you to remember them more easily.

the neck is simplified as one green mass, the blue would be the trapezoid muscle.
red is the volume of the boobs, orange is the entire ribcage volume, it simplifies many muscles there, it also includes the shoulder but we will ignore that one since it is not colored on the ones at the bottom.
the yellow portion would be the upper half of the "handles" formed by the external oblique muscle, the green part then would be the fatty, lower half portion of it, the difference between man and woman is that this one portion is more fatty on the women and it is what gives us the femenine hourglass figure.
the lime green would be the volume of the pelvis, here we have the gluteus and the tensor fascia latae, as well as some of the adductors, the pectineus and iliopsoas are there atleast.

I think this is a good picture in the sense that it makes you think of said parts as single volumes, contained on their own, but I do not think they're good to study from as the volumes are too complex and you're missing way too much information.
I am sure the picture also wants to give you that the rectus abdomini has volume (the abs, even as seem from below like in the picture in the top right)

I think hampton does a good job in giving you all of this, but you should also study your anatomy too. Bridgman has similar stuff except is not colored and you kind of have to decipher yourself.

are these perspective lines correct? is this how it's supposed to be before drawing a body in perspective?

>> No.3187406

>>3186754
i'd say you should start by observing the negative space outside the figures. for example the left figure's legs. wouldn't you have said the gap between them was a little wider than you've drawn it? and her stretched out leg, the calf's not a smooth curve like you drew it, it's almost a really stretched out l-shape..because that's the shape of the muscle underneath.
people are heavy. where is her weight supported? it's the leg the same side as the raised arm yes? so that's sort of bent back a little since it is load-bearing. we can see the shape of her knee area strongly outlined against the black.
your lines aren't particularly confident. not quite chicken scratch, but it's a gesture drawing so be bold!

>> No.3188693

find some photo ref, make it grey scale and clip some custom brushes is one way. Look at some ref and simplify into basic shapes then just like blacing in panes when you do values, you can block in some shapes and detail/break them down into smaller shapes. Put some little "lights" on a layer above then hit it with a light soft brush and some color dodge and you got a little bit of glowy buttons.
Be careful of the greeble, though. You don't want so much detail that it distracts from your focus point.

You can also image search for model kit decal sheets and cut/paste as you need. I like doing that for vehicles/mechs.

>Would you be able to describe the differences?
I can try, I don't have such a huge experience. it's very smooth, the pen just slides on the surface. the biggest issue will be the size if you get a small one, it just feels weird and cramped. you can't really use gestures or your entire arm, it's more about the wrist. maybe it's different on very big models, haven't had much experience with them.
>screen tablet
this on the other hand is not worth it, at least to start out. they're very expensive. I don't know if there are any cheap ones.
that said you can check out Huion (http://www.huiontablet.com), they're much cheaper than Wacom and are apparently pretty good. I was looking up reviews everywhere at some point and I couldn't find any "it died in 3 months" or whatever.

Don't listen to that faggot anon, many pros use regular tablets, no screen needed. Have you seen the concept art for the Marvel Studios films? Ryan Meinerding, one of the lead artists of their concept art team, just uses an old intuos and nothing particularly fancy. In fact you might even be some benefits to not going for the screen tablet, I find them to have the little backdraw of having your hand obscuring part of the drawing, having to use a screen glove, etcetera. Tablets are tools, they don't make the artist, if you're serious about digital art you're better off spending money on learning rather than on an expensive tablet.

Thanks man! Yeah greeble seems only good for gigantic structures/cities where the little bits and pieces can be "justified" and contrasted with larger shapes.

The model sheet tip is genius, thanks for that.

I have a one more specific question:
How can I logically (or seemingly logically) place cut-lines along the surface of an object? Like for a car, there's usually cut lines for the doors, the trunk, and the hood. But then you look at any spaceship concepts and they tend to have cut lines everywhere. Planes tend to have a lot of Panel Lines too. I guess a better question would be, is there a way to utilize cut/panel lines in a way that both shows the form of the object while being functional? I guess this is probably where ref seems to come into play, but I thought I'd ask.

>> No.3189191

>>3189184
ref of something similar as a guide, but consider the function. How would the object be manufactured? There would be seams there. Access panels and such too. I'm still a neophyte, but the things I'd consider would be along those lines as well as thinking of 'edge flow' like if you where a 3d modeler. You can use the seams to guide the viewer's attention as well. Aesthetic shapes within the larger shapes.

>> No.3189192

>>3189174

I already have a screenless tablet, the reason I ask about screen tablets is because I'm a huge lineart fag and every time I use the tablet everything I make looks like shit to me because there isn't direct control the same way there is when drawing on paper. I get you're supposed to get used to it but the difference really irritates me, and I've been using it a while but that feeling simply doesn't go away.
Also, thanks for the Huion suggestion, I plan on getting gud but not going pro at least for now, so yea I'd rather not spend a fortune for a tablet.

Brush up on your drawing skills first, then practice simplifying objects into planar forms.
Similar planes have similar values.

This is all way ahead of your skill level, however. Work on your drawing and visualization skills. You are still symbol drawing and your drawings look flat. I suggest drawing from life and the Charles Bargue Drawing Course.

I don't really know how to explain this any better but muscles are sorta like "sheets" that envelop the bones, and are connected with each other. When they become larger they start "bulging" and this is why beginners draw them as blobs, without really understanding their shapes.

a few simple tricks.
First grab an real image of a big belly.
Then blend the edges after cutting out with the lasso tool.
Then adjust the color to match the skin tone better.
By grabbing an existing image of a woman with a big belly, you get all the folds and creases a fat belly requires to look real. Also the shadows and lighting play a big role.

there is no guarantee, but outside input gets you to look at your work from fresh eyes. Crits aren't a 'how to' connect the dots to success. It's an opinion you can take or leave. It depends on your level of trust of the person critiquing. And anon on 4chan or a trusted friend who is a working pro.
I look at crits from here as just a fresh perspective and a good way to keep myself grounded.

Kind of depends on your level of skill and years of experience. If you are just 'grinding out fundies' do some personal work & if you can't think of something, try to copy or do your own version of a piece you like form you favorite artist. I like to peruse artstation and find work that kicks me in the nads and makes me want to figure out a particular look or rendering tech that the artist used.
Crit is helpful, but if it is not forthcoming you have to find a way to get yourself moving. They say variety is the spice of life. I think that could be applied a bit to this learning process.

Determining which program is better than the other is almost purely subjective and varies between users. I'd recommend trying both and highlighting, making notes of the exclusive features they have, ease of use, and suitable customization you'd like to have at your disposal.
Personally, I use a mix of CS6, Sai, and recently, Manga Studio. Each one has perks over the other and luckily can help me substitute tools in a program that one lacks or I just haven't discovered yet. Like gradient mapping in Photoshop, cleaner lines in Manga Studio, or a less than complex interface in Sai.

TL;DR, try to use both to offset their individual weaknesses you're aware of and keep the file format .psd to transfer between them seamlessly.

Eventually you'll start to visualize framing people/objects in boxes or 3D in general in proper perspective, but for now it's best to keep drawing them out in shapes as suggested. You'll notice you'll eventually be able to skip constructing drawing things composed of 1 or 2 basic shapes and start drawing it in proper perspective without building too much, but at the same time you'll see you'll come crawling back to building with 3D shapes once you've found yourself drawing a complex figure or object and repeat the process until you don't need to rely on the method out of familiarity. Kim Jung Gi is a notable artist that visualizes his work in 3D boxes and pays a disproportionate amount of attention to perspective.

You can tilt and rotate the tablet or yourself later anyways, but you really should try not drawing tilted.

Can someone explain why proko couldn't draw from imagination? Not trolling, I genuinely want to know so I can avoid his mistakes

>> No.3203975

He said so himself, "don't make the same mistake I did, don't wait 10 years to start drawing from imagination".

>> No.3203979

>>3203956
He was rushing in that video if that's what you mean. The kind of traditional work that Proko does takes a lot of time too but looks really nice. It'd be a different story if he was a more imaginary based artist but he's not. He mainly works realistically and from life.

So I've finished Hampton's figure drawing series, and I now have a basic knowledge of where all the muscles go. How do I go from this to drawing realistic figures?

Draw as you like, rotating is useful. You can rotate canvas in most programs using R. If you get a tablet with touch functions you can rotate the canvas with your fingers, no problem at all.

Why are you giving them bad advice?

After all this time I'm still having trouble with the fundamentals. Dodson and Edwards didn't do shit (I must've drawn Stravinsky upside down about 15 times now), and Fun with a Pencil was a waste of time. What books do you suggest and in which order? What about that meme image that talked about how to get good in a year?

>> No.3204461

>>3204440
Fundamentals aren't books and books don't do anything for you either. The only person who does something is you. To get straight to the point the fundamentals means to draw from life, so you should do that. Do that all the time and you'll definitely get better within a year's time.

Well I'm glad to hear that. I could never get the hang of all these concepts and guidelines

not really a question but not often does something from /ic/ come up in my job, but today i was drawing a face for a portrait and i realised that the way i map it out is not dissimilar to that complex looking way of drawing a face people here (used to) swear by, and at the time i thought it was bullshit, i was like 'all you need is a circle, if that' but if i had just tried that other method i perhaps could have spent less time on learning how to draw a face and more on how to paint one lol. anyway, so i guess just a beyond-the-grave recommendation for the..um..not the loomis one, the one where it has tons of cross contours, i think the guy has an 'online academy', hopely someone remembers what it's called

Ever heard of Proko and his kangaroo drawing from imagination?

Anyone got that tutorial picture about visual measuring, I can't remember if it's using an original portrait drawing, or if it was a Singer Sargent study, but it's a four panel picture visualizing different ways of measuring, like 2d mapping.

Stupid question: how do I navigate weibo.cn? found a cool artist and I want to look at their galley and favorites but clicking shit gets me nowhere. I don't know if the site has "reblog/retweet" feature or if the page I got into was from the original artist. Any help?
