Trying gamut masks again. I don't know what i'm doing. But it's coming out much worse than anticipated. I'm not sure if i'm supposed to keep the colours at the same saturation as the ones in the gamut mask, but i'm pretty sure the multiply and overlay layers are messing with the saturation anyway.

Nah mine was from this site http://www.livepaintinglessons.com/gamutmask.php

I was using YURMBY because I learned that's the digital colour wheel.

I like your colour wheel better though, what's it from? And thanks, but which layer modes like can I use to shade that don't mess with saturation? I suppose I could use just a black paint with the multiply layer but I feel weird shading with black. And just applying shading without layer modes is kind of hard with animals because of all the different local colours. (this is frustrating stuff i've been thinking about too much lately).

>> No.3181183

>>3181149
I would just fiddle with the color of the multiply layer until you get something that fits into the gamut.

My color wheel is from mypaint. It's great for visualizing color and as I demonstrated, you can put in a gamut mask. You might find a better color picker as an extension for what ever program you are using.

I love the atmosphere a lot, but it seems like everything is too separate from each other? You've rendered everything so clearly, that it looks as though you've taken parts of different images and put them together.
Some color overlays or tweaking of the colors to marry it all together would really benefit this otherwise nice piece!

Gotta do something about those legs, m8. The one touching the floor looks deformed, almost. The calf is bigger than the thigh which is not natural. The tits look too high up or like too curved up. Weird face overall. Arms don't attach to the body very well, whether you address the shoulders or not. The foot in the air looks really weird.

I'm having a lot of trouble understanding how her skirt is supposed to go? It is shorter in the front, knee length, but gradually gets longer in the back as I am having it train behind her. The front facing leg will be pushing the fabric to the side, but the leg in back could or should be hidden I suppose?

Can anyone help me understand? I cant visualize this no matter how hard I try.

if you want it to be flat why not just have the lines go all the same direction like Gauguin would do? As is you just make them go every which way and it's incredibly confusing to look at. it doesn't look flat, it just looks weird. Look at gauguin's work if you want to learn how to flatten an image or just google "Synthetism"

I disagree. He's using his fat hatches to define volume, and it's working. Why are you trying to straightjacket him into another artist's style, instead of developing his own. Your attitude here would have forbidden Gauguin to every get anywhere, because he broke away in his own style.

This is one of the better pieces posted here all month. The use of color is excellent, and the composition solid. This style is worth developing and exploring.

Well, at first i was just using it as a quick way to shade my daily sketches, and i found it to be kinda cool, so i started using it on colored pieces too. Actually, many of my color pieces are just older sketches that i colored (pic rel). Because i didn't intend for them to be colored at the time, to make them work with color is a bit of a balancing act. This one i pulled off pretty well, imo.
>>3185549
I don't mind it looking a bit weird. I get what you saying about it being confusing, but i think it's a question of individual perception. I'd say about 10% of the people who comment on my stuff say that they find the hatching distracting and/or painful to look at, while everyone else is fine with it, with around 10% also stating that they like it exactly because of the hatching.
And believe me, i'm already too dogmatic about my art as it is, if i start doing all my hatching in a single direction (instead of doing it in whichever direction i feel it would work in specific situation) on top of that, i'm gonna just descend into total autism.
As for Gauguin and synthetism, all the stuff google shows to me is the paintings, i can't see a single graphic work. The works i shared here are graphic drawings (even when i throw in some flat colors, it doesn't make it a painting), and i just don't think you can get the same feel with the fat dark lines as you can with the brushstrokes (assuming i even wanted to get the same feel, which i don't, from what i saw it really isn't my cup of tea).
>>3185591
Don't worry, i don't mind criticism. And it's not like i'm gonna start doing anything that i don't personally like, too, so it's fine.
>>3186135
Yeh, the legs are kinda weird here. It actually relates to the thing i said above. I'm very dogmatic about my art. so i feel like in cases like this one i could avoid the weird look in certain places, but that would require me to deviate from the established process, which i have really quite hard time doing sometimes.

Being somewhat of a connoisseur when it comes to monster girls (and monster people in general) i'm of the opinion that a good monster grill design must maintain a balance between sexually appealing and terrifying (with monster bois you can just go full terrifying, since masculine sex appeal is largely based on physical strength which can be naturally extended to the monstrous features).
So, none of this "monster musume" faggotry, where it's basically a reguar thot with some bird talons or snake tail slapped on her. This is not moster-grill, this is moe bullshit. To have a proper monster girl you need a number of essentials to take note of in your design:
1) Smooth transition of human-like features into the monster-like ones. Centaurs are just an easy cop-out, and do not constitute organic or imaginative designs. You don't do monster girls waist-down, you do them face-down, so to speak. Gradually increase severity of deformations of/deviations from the human form to create a more coherent creature design. Or, alternatively, you can maintain the same level of mostrification across the whole figure, that would be even better.
2) Don't loose touch with the sexy side of the deal, unless you want to just do a monster as opposed to doing a monster girl. Your design should have at least some elements of female sex-appeal. Most notibly - waist to hip ratio. It's also useful to maintain juvenile face features, such as small nose, large eyes etc, since this is another thing that men overwhelmingly find attractive in women. Don't overdo it tho, unless you want to cross into the weeb faggotry zone. Interestingly enough, you can actually ditch tiddies if you feel like they're not quite working with the design. As long as you get female proportions right (wide hips, narrow waist, narrow ribcage) you're good.
3) Play with other proportions. Long necks, long arms, spider-like hands, huge feet and other fuckery is all-right as long as it's consistent with the design.(1/2)

3188910

continuing the >>3188898
...So experiment and shit, my niga.
4) Monster-girl are not human, so presumably they wouldn't act human either. To score some additional spook-points try showing the alien psychology of the characters through your artwork with face expressions, actions and the like. Absent-minded stares work great. Smiling in the camera - not so much. But it heavily depends on the context of each individual illustration, naturally, so just keep it in mind. Try to relate to the viewer that he's dealing with a dangerous predator, not just la grill qute.

Among the works of art featuring monster-grills (the proper kind) i can single out Claymore. With this comic everything is just right in monster-girl department (after the point where they introduce the awakened ones), so i encourage those interested check it out for inspiration (but based on your image i can guess that you're already at least somewhat familiar).

But these are just the tips that work for my personal conception of what a good monster-girl should be like, with the emphathis on "monster", not "girl". So you know, take it as you may. You might actually prefer the monster musume type for all i know, in which case shame on you^W^W^W godspeed.

Now, if i was to give advice specifically to you, i'd say that you need to work on your gesture, form, proportions, anatomy, you know, the basics of art. But that's applicable regardless of what you want to draw, so get on it.

Concepting a bat-like/gorilla like magitech robot that works on music, off of an engine that is made out of saxaphone stuff and bagpipes.
I've did several silhouettes and sketches but can't get the feel that it's a robot working through a musical engine.
I also don't want it to look like Dwemer robots from Elder Scrolls or something like that, too brass/steampunky would ruin it. It should be a bit towards the android/more advanced kind of a robot.
One thing I am thinking about is making a trombone sort of pipe stick out of his chest and bunch of organ pipes to go along his spine, but the issue with pipes is that it's easy to confuse with steampunk valves and pipes. The best solution is to find a way to apply string instrument elements somewhere, but I can't think of a string instrument application that wouldn't be retarded.

First, i wouldn't say that when exaggerating a figure what you exxagerate is the anatomy of the figure. What you exxaderate is proportions and form. Anatomy is about the exact form of particular bones, points of muscle insertion and so on. It is the fundamental that is placed on top of everything else, anatomy will do you no good if you don't understand form and proportions. As such, you only really change the proportions of the figure, and the anatomy follows (because you can't draw say a tiny muscle on an elongated limb).
As to the degree you should change the proportions, it really depends on the design you're going for. It is paramount to know the proportions of the normal figure as a point of reference however.

The rule is not much to make it strict but to motivate you to atleast sketch in order to respond to someone. The main deal with this thread is to post up your work no matter what level you are, and if anybody wants to punch you they need to expose themselves in order to do it. It's to make the begginers feel welcome to participate and the advanced ones to feel appreciated by their work. It's a way to balance out /ic/'s most rough mechanic.

Krita offers a brush that generates patterns for example striations or cross patterns. I layered, rotated and erased them to get the desired effect. Yes, mix and smear things around with the palette knife.

I'm new to digital media, and I take the same approach I did with oils, lots of layering and smearing things around. Krita lets me 'burn' or 'dodge' the image so I produce multiple darker or lighter layers and erase them away to get the effect I want. I creates a kind of stillness I like.

fuckin love this. always been partial to geometric design mostly because i suck at it. always thought it took a lot of skill to do it right.

heres a piece im working on thats mostly a study in line width variation. trying to replicate that inkwell/brush look with a hard round and proper relining/erasing, since whenever I try to use pressure sensitivity to the same end I find it doesn't look as alive. worked hard on avoiding no-handing or crappy hair, tear it apart

i like the concept, the face could use more darkness to show it's form better. Light and rendering is the hardest step but is important. The characters face is a bit flat; a small amount of heavy shadow can go a long way. I would suggest practicing your characters face from different angles and play around with the shadows and highlights. The soft look is great and you've blended well. is the top of the head a kind of fire? it's a cool design, don't be afraid to get weird :P

I like everything! The hair and face are cute, the boobs and hips are nice.

The two things I would nitpick at are:

- Her elbow is very thin where her bicep meets the elbow, could that be thickened a bit?

-The lighting on the abs doesn't really fit in with how the body is positioned. The abs are facing the viewer while the body is turned away.

otherwise, really nice!

Well I hope that's a good thing. Yeah it's weird trying to figure out how all those lights will interact. I'm sure from a scientific point of view I'm way off.

Just been on some kind of 80s neon futurism kick lately.

I live in Cali, what school should i go to? ive applied for CalArts cuz its my best chance for connections, but its also a meme and not the best place to learn and progress. where else should i apply to learn more about sequential art, fine arts, and/ or animation?

I really admire the whole musical element to it, adds more pizzazz, at the same time I'm getting a post apocalyptic vibe which is awesome, just a suggestion maybe you could add the string elements to his legs? Walking on instruments and making music seems cool.

Did this months ago and I haven't been able to properly finish anything since. Any advice on how to just get a painting done? Do any of you spend 10+ hours in one sitting or is it broken up to think about it?
