3174931 No.3174931 [Reply] [Original]

Hey /ic/ I'm currently an artist making their way through traditional art school (primarily 2d) and I've come into somewhat of an issue.

Now to give some context, my school is very traditional. We have no digital art classes aside from the typical graphic design classes and one digital photography class (it's less about the art and more about how to take good photography of a subject; portrait, store fronts, interiors and whatnot) No classes in digital painting, animation, 3d modelling, image manipulation, or anything.

So I'm in painting, all well and good- traditional skills are important and I really enjoy them, but I would like to do something different. Our assignment is to take two "Masterpieces", say Van Gogh's "Starry Night" and Whistler's "Portrait of the Artist's Mother" and combine them in some way while still having good composition, focal points, technique, etc. Being someone who is very interested in the digital realm, I of course want to take two digital masterpieces and bring them together.

The only problem is, due to my lack of formal education on digital artists, I've found that very difficult to do. I don't really know what artworks would be considered masterpieces or not. So I've come to you, /ic/, to give me suggestions on what art is groundbreaking nowadays, and (to make sure it fits within the rules) WHY they're relevant. After all, I need to explain to my art professor why they're masterpieces as well.

In terms of style I'm very much open to anything. I've featured an Alyn Spiller as my pic, and is something I really liked. He's been in the field and on some very important creations for a long time so I thought he might be relevant.

easy, craig mullins, because hes a pioneer to digital painting. everything is based off his work, the strokes, the brushes, and his methods. Jia Ruan because his paintings show how well he balances out his color, lighting and edges and has had a huge influence on eastern digital art with this paintings

Would there be any few images that you would consider to be a "masterpiece"? Something well known within the field that I could use as a reference? When I asked her what her "masterpiece" criteria is she told me it had to be something well known. While I've never seen any of Craig Mullins' artworks before, I'm sure they're amazingly influential within the field of digital art. They're beautiful.

I'll also try to get more clarification from my professor about what might qualify as a masterpiece, since she's pretty lenient on these types of things (as long as it'll be a challenge for me) Hopefully she'll see it as an opportunity for me to do some research and teach the class on a basically unknown art medium (to them)
I have seen Jia Ruan's work though! I feel like I could really work with either of them, if I'm allowed to. Thank you for the suggestions.

A digital artist that doesn't make use of the effects or auto-adjustment tools is usually goals. Apterus' is excellent for me because he doesn't typically utilize those effects, and sticks to basic brushes. The point is, shortcuts tend to cheapen the art for me, so whenever someone paints something beautiful without that is worthy of praise.

that's the age we live in, my man....

you know, the funny thing is there are always artists that hate the art of their time... artists of the time hated William Bouguereau because his stuff was too rendered... same thing for Von Gogh. you're one of those people. are there any digital artists that make technically skilled, aesthetic, meaningful art?

having to always have a deep meaningful theme for a painting would make for a miserable time imo, and much less material would be output.

>> No.3176514

>>3176497
People also have to consider that the great painters still did have to do drab stuff to put food on the table. This is like that to them. Still gotta build a portfolio, still gotta do the work for their company, still gotta make money. They might have one or two meaningful works, but they'll be rare and maybe not shared with anyone.

yep.

the paintings in this thread may be "shallow" but it's not doubt high skilled pieces and can go in a work portfolio. these painters don't have time to be the stereotypical tortured artist, always needing deep, meaningful theme for each painting. The ones that do try to have a meaningful theme usually do it in comic strip form
.
desu the painters now who try to make deep pieces probably don't make any money to make a career out of it. if painter wants to be able to do what they love - paint, they need money, and the money is currently in the "shallow" video game/movie poster-tier art

yeah i understand, but the reason i did't mention those is because theyre not well known, they dont have a big history like jia ruan or craig. and ive seen their processes, they are way less authentic to painting

Real talk, how many of you like this shit just want to have these guys technical skill or their job. I use to idolize all this shit but then i got gud and got paid and now it all looks so bad. In service of a game/film/animation/narrative/design fine, but "digital painting" as a standalone "product" nope not doing it for me.

I also find it amusing that the common pleb is mostly unmoved by digital work. As in some artstation zbrush shit will never rock someones soul like a bernini.

My problem at the moment is that I don't know how to get that painterly in digital format. I can do it all day traditionally, but when it comes to digital I'm lost. I've tried tons of brushes but it seems like the program I have is lacking when it comes to downloading nice brushes.

I'm only assuming it's the brushes because I'm capable of doing it already with paint and canvas.

I'll admit that I'm pretty bad at grasping digital painting techniques too, but I think the first step to at least diagnose some of the problems is to get the correct brushes down. From there I can understand what else is wrong, which I'm sure there's a lot. I know I'm using layers wrong, and I'm having a lot of trouble making things look cohesive within a painting. I'm probably going to take an online class or two to see if I can work through it, but I first want to at least have the correct materials

A good traditional artist can already has the skills to be a "digital" artist, all they have to do is understand whatever software they are using.
A lot of good traditional artists aren't able to make pieces of equal quality traditionally. They require more skills unlike the traditional artist which only requires more knowledge on whatever software they are using.
