Tips and resources would be helpful.

So far my plan is to take random images from google, turn it into black and white and then copy it.

It doesnt matter how you copy if you dont understand lighting and materials scrub

Simplify things down into ~4 or 5 values. Maybe even just 3 (a light, a dark, and something in between).

Yup. Start by drawing some stuff with very limited palettes, like 3 colours or so. Doesn't have to be greyscale either, obviously, but you'll start to see what works and what doesn't

Dont do this.

RGB doesnt work like that.

Different colours would give you different values. As an example, go to your favourite program and draw pure RED line, GREEN line and BLUE line.

Then thrn the layer into monochrome. You will see immediately that the values do not match. Color that results from screen light behaves differently from color materials.

Study monochromatic captured images, not coloured images made monochromatic.

I would say understand the form first.
Unless you know which side is facing up, side, or bottom, you won't know where to put light, shade, or shadows.
A good way is to train your eye to separate x y z surfaces to understand the form of an object

you do realize that there are different ways to turn images monochromatic?

There's the 'turn black and white' filter/layer setting, which gives the results you describe, and there's simply putting a completely black layer on top of the picture and setting the blending mode to color, which in your example would result in three lines with the exact same shade of grey.

All you will learn from that it how to copy values.

To be able to render from imagination, you will need to study simple planar forms, like a cube.
Then practice simplifying the forms you see into planar structures.

You will want to study from life as much as you can. If you need to use photo reference, find photos with only one light source. A lot of gesture drawing resources have shitty lighting. Do not bother with shitty lighting.

Isn't being able to copy values important though? I'm pretty okay at drawing from imagination. I'm not pro tier or anything but it's pretty passable.

values are difficult to see. Yes, being able to observe values is a useful skill, but sometimes what you see does not help to describe the form.

In that case, you need to simplify and design the values yourself to make the form more obvious.
