Anybody working on comics and such? I recently entered into a doujin market (futaket) and I'm working on my first doujinshi.

This is a lot harder than I thought it would be.

I think your composition is boring and the panneling doesn't read well. You're supposed to direct the viewer's gaze with motion/perspective/composition, and make it look pleasing overall.

That's a good critique but I think his art style is already great.
Looks so similar to the LWA anime's style.
His technique in panning/panelling isn't that polished since there's not really a good reference book about those kind of stuff as far as I know. Most 'first doujinshis' have problems with it.
Anyway I think he's doing well and should focus on schedule.

doorknob needs to be polished though and that huge black part behind the door is annoying

Thank you for the comments. As far as paneling and composition goes, I think it I'll just have to fail until I get better due to time constraints. I'll check out Framed Ink once I have a chance. Also, thanks for the suggestion on screen tones. I'll look into that.

For the most part, I've been looking at other doujinshi as references, but there's so many aspects that I need to consider that it's hard to really digest them at a non-shallow level. It also doesn't help that the quality of doujinshi varies widely and I might end up picking up bad habits.

I think the guy's recommendation of Framed Ink goes over it.

Perhaps not paneling specifically (I forget) but he definitely talks about directing the viewer's eye in a composition, which you can extrapolate.

>I make doujins too. One mistake western artists ALWAYS make is not using screentones, but instead using flat greys.
says a man who's used to reading scans rather than actual paper copies

Screentones in print are quite similar to flat greys, especially when the print format is smaller than A4. What you're used to is the paper texture mangled by the scanning process. To imitate that, rather than using screentones, you should be using proper textures. OPs problem on the other hand is not greys, it's the brush that's "too digital"; manga artists drawing digitally usually use more jagged brushes with 100% opacity (the only variance on pressure being the size) that imitate ink on a paper to a certain extent.

Not that guy. The answer is not that simple.

If you're preparing something for b/w print, your images need to be either a greyscale image in the 250~300 dpi range, or 600~1200 dpi for bitmap, or a combination of both kinds in an EPS file, which you guys probably aren't using. If you're using CSP, you're likely working with rasters, so it's either 300dpi greyscale or 1200dpi bitmap.

Greyscale washes are converted to a screen by the printer, and for digital offset printing used by most doujinshi printers, that is typically a 90~120 lpi screen. This means that if you're doing your comic in greyscale, your linework will be screened along with your washes and tones. They'll never look as crisp as a true high-dpi bitmap. Also, real manga screentones are almost never above 45 lpi. So using real manga screentones rather than greyscale absolutely makes a difference *in print*.

That said, western artists typically aren't aware of these things, and end up using screentones that are too tight, or convert them to low res greyscale images, which means they get screened again in the printing process. That's what causes the ugly moire patterns. If you're submitting as greyscale, then you shouldn't use manga screentones.

If you're not going to be coloring I suggest you work in a Greyscale mode document instead of RGB to save RAM.

If you need to make an exception and want to use colors on just one layer, you can convert that particular layer to RGB, and have the other layers be Greyscale:

>Layer -> Convert... -> Convert Layer Color Space -> RGB/Alpha

Krita will still display the document as Greyscale, so you need to change the document's colorspace proptery to RGB/Alpha

>Image -> Propterties -> Image Color Space -> RGB/Alpha

RGB layers will then display correctly alongside Greyscale layer. the caveat is that any new layers you create will be RGB by default.

You're practically painting the comic at this point. I think not using screentones is fine in this instance (and I'm normally a screentones faggot), in fact I think it would be a detriment.

What the fuck is wrong with this board, I came here expecting good comics with beautiful art and elaborate writing, instead all I got is porn with lots of dicks. Then there's this imgur faggot with /d/ tier writing and fuccboi male characters who probably suck dicks as well. You're all candy ass cookie cutter tranny porn addicts, all of you.

Good news, I might change it to focus purely on blowjobs since I enjoyed a good blowjob-only doujin recently.
