This. You don't have to pick one. I like to use Hampton for creating things from scratch and loomis as reference/standart.

Hampton explains things better for beginners, since he breaks down the body parts in a way that is very easily understandable. He was a lot more helpful to me when starting out than Loomis, personally.

Loomis. Hampton is just one book, and missing many key points that loomis covers, like perspective of the figure, proportions of the whole body in head units and barely draws any female bodies. but do both anyway.

so should a beginner do hampton or loomis first?

has any of you queers done studying dodson's keys to drawing?

>> No.3166215

Loomis is reference. Hampton is good for beginners if you supplement the book with his video lessons as well as another resource for anatomy.

It's the other way around, Hampton is one of the most advanced figure drawing books you can find. It assumes you have a good understanding of perspective, form, gesture and have a confident line. If you don't, the book will be useless to you.

I don't even have a good command of any of those and I'm doing just fine going through his material.

By the way he teaches you to have confident line....I don't know about his pirated shit but "Steve hampton" teaches IRL confident line.
