alright... my opinions on what people should study change daily, but currently these are my feelings on it

The most important thing is drawing, and the most important things to draw are fabric and the human figure. If you want to be on the fast track (which still means years) to getting to where I'm at, get some fabric from a fabric store, just basic off-white fabric, and a make-up mirror, and draw your hands, face, and the fabric everyday.

For the most part anything you shade will have light interacting with it either like fabric or like a human figure.

light hits stone, wood, metal, some plants, and any hard thing like that as if it's skin. light hits water, clouds, hair, and some plants like it's fabric.

If you can draw fabric, and you can draw the human figure, you can draw anything.

>> No.3162966

>>3162962
I say "Some plants" for those because waxy leaves act like skin for all intents, and some petalled flowers like lilies from what I've observed are more or less fabric.

>> No.3162971

>>3162962
and you might not think metal acts like skin, but it's a variation on it. If you really look hard at a metal pitcher or something you'll see there's a definite simplicity to it's shadows, it just also happens to be incredibly reflective. And reflections for the most part are like drawing 2d images that are layered on top of the reflective object, so you don't really need to specifically practice metal. You'll just get better at it as you draw more.

I haven't even listened to half of it, and already everything coming out of your mouth is complete idiocy. You seem to me like you have barely ever even had a full conversation with a woman. You talk about females as if they're a single entity, like they're all the same, and you understand the world so much better than they do. Do you even realize that women are humans too?
>women get to tell anyone they like how they feel, and the guy will just say alright i'll make it work!! it's so unfair why do men not get to do this?
What world are you living in where there is a norm like this? This is clearly, objectively not the case. Then you go on to claim that this bullshit is the reason why men are aggressive, and why wars exist. Because men are 'unhappy' because of women. Uh, do you even understand what you're saying? How can a human possibly be this fucking isolated, sad and moronic? Yes there is something that makes men more aggressive than women, it's called testosterone. There are more to rendering than just making neat textures.
The coloring is pretty simplistic, flat yes, but there are shadows being cast, color being used.

Even if it's cell shading anime crap, you can still value the pallet used, how it was used and technical aspects like shadows.

For such "artistic" critical view, you sure have a limited perspective regarding the critical aspect of any type of illustration and the diverse, non linear rendering aspects

>concept artist

Is this the main goal for every /ic/ poster? What about just doing interesting original art? Maybe even publish a comic of your own through some independent way? Hell, doing it through the internet with webcomics?
Who the fuck says that you need to pain photorealistic shit to have your work praised? Imagination and vision alongside with technical skill yes, but you don't need to create incredibly elaborated rendered drawings

Moebius was a master and he could do incredibly visually complex works. He could also achieve impressive results with simply, but intelligent usage of colors and details without overworking to much his renders.

I guess you can shit on creativity and focus on realistic texturing (like that meme image of the marine soldier concept /ic/ loves to throw around the board)

But there is more to a graphic artist than just create realistic concept art for games or movies.
I'm not saying what I posted is original, it is not and It wasn't drawn with that intention.

As I said, I saw that illustration and I felt inspired to do a quick doodle with that pose in mind, but having such a simplistic notion of what an artist should aim that regarding his career and what should value most.

just speaking from how i currently paint, I find it's best to work with opaque and semi-transparent paints and then lay trasparent paints on top of that initial more opaque layer, so you can enhance colors and brighten areas.

So even if you don't work dark to light, try working opaque to transparent.

But the effects of light paint laying on top of dark paint is a fairly common one, not sure if it's a modern/contemporary technique, but it helps create the illusion of light better.

For the darks you should be painting, and for the lights you should be drawing, because it's harder to redo light areas, and lighten paint already on the canvas, than it is to go darker. If you start with thin dark layers you can always go darker, or add mid tones, but the light is the last thing you should do.

It also helps you understand the range of values on your canvas. Just visually it can be much more informative if you already know the darkest part of your painting. For the most part highlights shouldn't be white, unless it's a reflective surface like metal, so when your canvas is all white it can become hard to gauge when something is dark enough.

You can always just say fuck that and work in ranges of 25%-75% value and just slowly work on small areas without any layers, but that depends on what type of painting you are trying to do. And even then, you'd at least want a wash of lightened burnt sienna as your ground, it wouldn't just be working on a white canvas.

>> No.3164882

>>3164879
>>3164867

either way though, the main thing you should be worrying about with painting right now isn't "This is the right way to work".

as soon as you think you've found "the right way to work" try something else. If you're used to working light to dark, do the opposite, or somewhere in the middle.

Most of the time you should abandon a method of working even if you haven't mastered it yet, because you'll never find out how you like to paint that way.

Yea completely agree with your last point aha that's sort of why I'm starting to have a go painting plane air. definitely have a lot more to work on overall anyway. I think I was struggling with how overcast it was on the day, it didn't exactly give me much to work with in terms of contrast in lights and darks which is why i think the painting comes off a little flat. thanks for the advice. ill have to start using a ground too, the masonite im painting on would come in handy if i were to prime it with glue instead of gesso

I'd actually say, ditch the bg. You already fucked it up with the brown. But I think if you emphasize the silhouette of the figure more by creating a nice strong border between the bg and the figure. You could also use the bg color to represent what the figure is sitting on, allowing the top portion to be a white or something.

I wish there were less brushstrokes in the bg at the top. It's super distracting from the figure. Maybe if you swapped the complex top with the simple bottom, that might be an easy solution. I'd personally go for a really white bold outline, but it's up to you.
Also where are the arms?

Anon, stop being a scrub. Your job as the freelancer is to provide a product as close to what the client has in their head, and the only way you're going to figure that out is by asking questions. As for the thumbnail sketch, her pose kinda looks like she's supposed to be sitting down so try putting on a rock with a lake in the background or something. If she's supposed to be standing and leaning to one side then I'd suggest redoing the pose.
tl;dr Add a background or fix the leaning pose and ask the client for more specific info

This is just a simple old timey posed photo of some characters. There's a lot that's messed up but it'll all be fixed in time.

This is going to be part of a larger piece I'm working on. I'm not even remotely sure how I'll integrate it but I'll cross that bridge later on.

I don't like using that method. It is easier to lurk some similar pose and I do the rest by myself. I have an acceptable knowledge of anatomy. Enough knowledge to do poses with little to no reference.

I mostly use other works/poses as inspiration

Apart from changing everything, a simple fix would be to angle the dude's spear differently, right now it's too parallel to the log and the point is tangenting with the stumps.

There's nothing that draws me to the guy, Infact I almost feel like it's a chore to look at him, he needs a bit more space, the trees to his left are competing too much. Instead of him walking to the right, maybe try having him walking forward and over the foreground, place his foot in front of that long grey thing (log?) and also angle it differently. I think it would be good to toss in more layers of ground to imply depth as well.

Look at the right most section. See how quick the light drops off into darkness? Now you probably don't want to do it that much but assumming the light is closest to the feet, her butt will be some 10% values darker for example and then another two on her upper body, not to mention her entire right side.
