IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Try finishing something. If you have a weak spot like hands or feet that prevents you from finishing it, don't start anything new. Overcome it even if it means relying heavily on reference without fully grasping the anatomy or form.
You'll have a much better grasp on when you'll get better if you actually face all the hurdles instead of working on the fundies without clear aim.

So I drew this last night. I have a really long way to go, but I'm forcing myself to draw at least once everyday to keep practicing.
I got a Wacom a few days ago and I'm enjoying it so far, getting used to it.

Now, how do you guys do the borders after sketching? as you can see in this example, my lines are all fucked up. I'm using SAI to draw, before I just took a picture of my pen drawings and used the curve tool to do the borders and digitalizing. Now I'm trying to use the pen instead but it ends up like this.

It looks better, but remember that people have more depth. A girl's neck isn't a flat cylinder, it has tendons and a few different subtle angles, and the shading on the neck should reflect that. Eye lids have depth too, and the eye lashes should look like they are curving out of the top of the kids, not just sticking straight up. The iris and the pupil also have many ridges and details, and the sclera should have small details too. You're making good progress, just try to imagine that you're capturing something 3D in 2 dimensions.

Hogarth explains the best but have horribly exaggerated drawings. I've not yet started Hampton yet. Vilppu is just so good that I'm so not dropping it yet! (I'm looking at you Loomis)

Try to at least finish 1 chapter of potential art book before dropping it.

Use Loomis as an occasional reference book and Vilppu as a personal teacher.

A week later.

The improvement isn't substantial, but way better than getting plateaued with Loomis, he was stuck in the same level for a year or so.

For now he's only focusing on Vilppu, and probably will go back to Loomis once he's done with the book. Granted, it's not panacea. Just wanted to share that Vilppu does work and need more recognition than Loomis...

For some people, Loomis just doesn't click as well as the starting point.

take a reference picture, turn it upside down and copy that. it will make it hard to symbol-draw as youa re now, when you see where you can go by actually observing what you draw you will hopefully feel the motivation to get out of symbol drawing

on a side note: faces are arguably the hardest thing to draw, especially if you are stupid enough to try to learn from anime styled smooth faces, try whole body pictures or better, animals

>>3152565
impressive painting, horrible drawing. You have to go back (to practicing drawing -> precise placement of features)
also dont puss out, you have some really nice subtle colour changes in her face and your edges are getting there too, but for example look at her right (our left) shoulder and armpit, theres a hard edge which is very interesting in the original, you disregarded it, notice also the reflected light from her left boob illuminating her right boob

>>3152603
have you tried toning your paper beforehand, then you can add darks and erase for lighter areas
you didnt pay enough attention to the face, it seems you made stuff up you werent actually seeing
try squinting to blur your ref and your drawing to get the values better, they dont have to be on point, just in the correct relation to each other eg the shadow on his right cheeck should be way darker

>>3152620

Your observation game is strong, though am i correct in assuming you are jumping from spot to spot while painting? Streamline your process to be more organized.
Other than that the most obvious being your brushwork is very unrefined, some suggestions:
dont zig-zag to fill a plane, make a conscious decision which direction your ONE stroke should be going, use bigger brushes (forces you to stop and think on its own), indicate the form by following/wrapping around with each stroke

Id like to hear any and all input i can get on me being stuck with painting.

When drawing the thing that clicked, the thing that made me instantly be able to recognize my mistakes and know what to study was finally "thinking in forms" as in 3D.

When painting i dont even know where to begin to understand the basics of how i could approach painting something realistic / believable from imagination.
When copying a reference im doing just that copying, i cant make sense of the colours and values i am seeing.

Pics related are an estimate on where i am right now (dont mind me pussing out on face and hands + feet, i even struggle with painting a skin coloured sphere right now).
The upper picture is from reference (dont know if 3dcg flatchested gets me banned here so censored), the bottom one is what my little knowledge of painting amounts to without a reference.

If anyone has an idea of what i am talking about and has some suggestions / exercises / tutorials / books that might help me itd be greatly appreciated.

Second, what is the best utilization of texture brushes? I was trying out some Kyle brushes for this study but I feel like I overdid it. I was using the dry and gouache brushes.

Gesture -> Construction -> Anatomy

Learn and understand before moving on to the next one.

Do gesture until you understand it then add in construction into the process. Once you grasp the process of going from gesture to construction and have a decent understanding of building the figure construction you move on to anatomy.

Use ref for this practice or live model if you can.

Do not learn everything all at once or skip the process. This is the fundamentals. Once you grasp this you'll be able to skip steps and maybe add your own twist to it.

Id say one can learn about gesture, but you fucked it by not drawing the feet. No matter how crappy they turn out, at least indicate them with simple triangles or some shit, it makes so much difference wheather a figure is planted on the ground or floating on the paper.
You want to someday make it? Exterminate those bad habits like some kind of nazi pest controller.

No it doesnt look okay and whatever you did you did not use boxes. Id suggest drop human figures for a while, get yourself something more abstract which your brain is not used to fuck up by interpreting - for example some kind of bulky beetles, crabs or something similar (they are all pretty much basic forms stacked together) and draw those things using boxes / cylinders etc
With animals you tend to not be so picky about every mistake and you start focusing on the construction part.
Once you get less overwhelmed by 3d forms give the human figure a try.

Pic related, give it a try.

Hard to tell, though like before it is very convincing as thumbnail - your values seem right.
This picture has not so much intriguing colour variety.
Is it from imagination or reference? You should have rearranged the scene so that more of his face would be illuminated to create interest there.

Have you tried painting the same thing multiple times / the last picture again? Its boring to do the same thing again but you will have the best comparison that way.

I am struggling with this myself so you dont want to take my advice as the absolute truth.

Obviosly your zig-zagging is gone and the strokes are following the form and stand out less - this imo makes the painting look more boring and less "virtuos". Though i think and hope this will turn back around once one is profound with stroke economy.

When using strokes consciously one also needs to start making decisions about edges. In your previous picture there is so much going on, one accepts this "mess" of strokes as edges (very interesting edges at that).
In the second the hard edge between light and dark on the arm work well with this hard single point light source, on the other hand i would blend the transitions on his cheek and temple more.
Although dont go over board with blending everywhere as it will end up rendered into a blurry mess.

cont.

>Also, I have to ask, how are you supposed to layout the paint?
I face the same problem as you right now. There is the "chinese hack" where you blend low opacity layers over countless low opacity layers. There is the "autist" (in literal sense) where one puts down the right colour at the right spot and never paint over it again.

Heres where i stand: When drawing one constructs the basic form and add / carve out details, in painting i try to gauge which areas are the easiest to do with one stroke, and which areas i need either a very small brush OR place one big stroke, and then the next colour over that only leaving the actual shape of the first stroke visible.

Its hard to explain but theres an exercise that forces you to have a well planned layout.
Take a picture of a tomato or plum or stuff like that, simple shape but very delicate colour/value changes.
Try to paint it with as few strokes as possible. You can colour pickt at first, though its better practice if you try to eyeball and mix the colours without a colour picker.
Then try to paint the same thing with less strokes. Then again. If you are really gud you can do it in less than 10. Pic related two of mine, though still messy. I am currently working on more of these, ill post as soon as im finished.

As i said, im struggling with this myself right now, if you can help ME with that please do lol

Hey, art material question here.

I've been using conte crayons a lot recently. They're nice but I feel like I wear out a piece (I use a third of a stick) after an 1-2 hours or so of drawing. It's kind of frustrating because I have to interrupt what I'm doing, get a new piece and wear it down before returning to what I'm doing.

Does Conte a Paris make thiccer versions of the crayon? Is there a similar medium that is thicker? I'm looking for something about the size and dimensions of jumbo General's compressed charcoals.

Can someone explain how you can view the front and side plane of an object in one point perspective? If the object is tilted so you can see the side plane doesn't the front plane have to be tilted (thus creating a second vp) as well? How can it remain a perfect square or rectangle?

Vanishing points are just directions. 1 point perspective means that of the 6 directions of a cube one goes straight forward and the other ones go 90° degrees up, down, left, right, and 180° behind you so they'll never hit the image plane no matter how big it is.
Imagine your eye being impaled with 3 infinitely long rods. Where they meet the paper you have a vanishing point.

Everything is relative to your camera.
In one point perspective every face of a square facing you remains square because it is an approximation of perspective.
It is also this way because every shape is not rotated, perpendicular to your center of vision.
The horizon line is not shown because it is infinitely off screen.
Hope this helps.

Interesting how you force lines which do not exist into your pic. You're in a weird limbo between symbols and values, and you need to stop thinking of 'areas which contain a color or value' and start learning to make them fluid. It seems you are incapable of creating a smooth gradient. You could outline large regions in this drawing which would contain the EXACT same shade throughout, rather than having the different shadows 'interact'.

I have no clue what is going on with the eyes, and that weird thing you have outlined around them.

To draw decent figures you need to have an advanced grasp of perspective, anatomy, proportion, and have the muscle memory to draw the lines you want to draw. Animators are always the best at creating figures, Aaron Blaise has good youtube videos, or you can obtain Vilppu's videos.

The gesture is an important step in a drawing, but it should be one of the last things you learn as a beginner, which is confusing since a lot of books will start with the gesture for some reason. If you have a pet cat or something try drawing them while they are playing, you'll be forced to quickly make a gesture to capture the action in the moment, an you might be able to understand WHY you need gestures better.
