What do you call this kind of art? Portraits? Also the style? It's very realistic, but it's not hyperrealism or photorealism. It's more like life realism.

Its just called realism (not the 19th century french realism of Courbet and Manet). There is no real term for it because before the 19th century there was nothing else to differentiate it from. This was the only form of fine art. Stuff thats similar to this can be found in the Baroque period the neoclassicist period and in some contemporary realist painters, particulary ones that studied at ateliers or art academys. If you search contemporary realism you'll get more stuff like this.

He's technically very skilled, but his art does feel very superficial and kitschy.

Thinking the same in terms of subject matter and how he sets up the scenes, kind of predictable and a bit tacky. I can't help, but find his paintings beautiful though, I guess that's the point of his work, to look good.

Since he's Italian and went to the Rome Academy of Art, he was probably very inspired by Caravaggio.

Yeah I agree reluctantly on the subject, but he is still at a certain level on both accounts technique and subject expression, he is not complete yet like everyone else without a Morgan Freeman narrating your biography...
