I like making these, but I wish my improvements were more noticeable.

The progress I've made has been in the ease of execution, and speed with which I produce paintings, not necessarily the quality of what I've produced. Idk how to change that and make the jump to more impressive work, but I just assume that will happen when I build up to longer projects that may take a week or a month, and all that practice on speed and execution will pay off for larger, more intensive paintings.

Or maybe I'm just not getting any better.

I just wish I was like the other people posted as examples of "GODLIKE PROGRESS" where a year passes and suddenly they're amazing. I'm such a slower progression. It could take years of incremental progress for me to finally reach a professional level, which I imagine will make me bitter. That I'm not an overnight success story, I will have spent years and years making very small steps forward. That's what I get for not being born with "talent"

>> No.3142318

>>3142316
Do you engage in deliberate practice? How much do you practice? Do you study your core fundamentals like perspective and anatomy? do you do finished work? Do you actively step out of your comfort zone? Talent may exist but you can still make a lot of progress by making sure you're training correctly.

>> No.3142324

>>3142318
it's probably not the same exercises that most anons engage with. I don't study perspective through construction, I study it freehand, because I hope to be able to accomplish good perspective simply through looking at what I'm drawing. I finish every painting I start, but I still have the prickish Picasso contemporary art tendencies of finishing a painting in a day or two, and moving onto the next one.

The aspects of my art that step out of my comfort zone are that I purposely do what /ic/ advises against, like foregoing construction for purely freehanded work, and not abiding by "no rules just tools". I don't use photographs, and I purposely try to learn through careful observation of individual lines, values, and colors. What that ends up meaning though is that I only have enough energy for that kind of work for about 3 hours a day, or 6 if I work in the morning and then work again at night.

That's my biggest fear, is that I might be getting faster and more accurate with my drawings and paintings, but the time it takes to execute precise work becomes less and less. Where before I could paint at a relatively middling level all day, now I'm lucky if I can do my best work for 2 hours straight. I quickly become tired simply from intense observation of what I'm looking at.

I've tried a lot of different things to alleviate this. Grisaille, perspective frames, taking more breaks, but I just can't work for much longer than a few hours without feeling completely drained, unlike when I was 18 and could paint and draw all day.

>> No.3142329

>>3142324
My art skills have much surpassed my patience. I'm still not patient enough to just suck it up and work 3 hours a day, for a month, on one painting. I see artists with much bigger followings than me, since I have no following, who produce work at a much more rapid pace than I do, and I feel enormous pressure to continually pump out paintings and not spend too much time on one thing. I've done paintings that took 5 days that ended up going completely unnoticed, just as much as the paintings I've done that took 3 hours. It's a fucking horrible feeling. I don't know what I'm supposed to be doing to make a career out of this. Nobody seems to give a shit about my art

Brian, you are getting better, it is noticeable. I can clue you in on why you are taking so long to get truly GUD, that's the good news, the bad news is that you might ignore the answer like you tend to do.

The thing that always pissed me off about you is that you have the potential and the work ethic to be a monster, you are prolific as fuck, but, instead of focusing your time to actively improve, you prefer to fall into your old habits and comfort zone and to give excuses for them.

I made this compilation of your drawings years ago to illustrate this same point to you: When you try to draw something and you can't, you usually turn the drawing into a retarded doodle, and every time we called you for these ugly habits, you gave "muh style" justifications and excuses, the most absurd of them being that you couldn't draw naked males because you were so disgusted by the male form that the experience of drawing them was almost traumatic or something.

>The short version of what I want to say is: people who improve "overnight" work a lot, and they focus their efforts on practicing what they want to be able to do, you on the other hand, you also work a lot, but you draw what you already know hoping you learn something new almost by accident.
It's not talent, it's studying smart. They see their mistakes as mistakes, you see your mistakes as style.

Again, you are clearly getting better little by little, you eventually got those figures right by drawing a fuck ton of stone abominations... but imagine how much faster it would have been if you made the effort to get them right from the start.

>The aspects of my art that step out of my comfort zone are that I purposely do what /ic/ advises against

By the way, that is not stepping out of your comfort zone, it's literally the opposite. Being a stubborn cunt and doing what you feel like at the moment is what you do.
And, well, you really showed us, didn't you? Who would have guessed doing the opposite of the proved methods for improvement would give you no improvement?

Also, what ever happened to the Catt paintings?

I don't think you need to be constantly cranking out paintings like some kind of art machine, but I think maybe you're spending too much time on your paintings, at least if you're not attempting to paint a masterpiece. Even my most challenging painting to date, although far from perfect, only took me around 3 hours.
A lot of the finished pieces that artists who do speed paints on youtube tend to only spend 2 to 6 hours in real time.

Don't put too much pressure on yourself, but practice more, and you'll get faster and more efficient with your drawing over time.

Regrettably when I started I didn't really have any influences, I thought I could be a better artist just trying to become my own influence and looking at the world around me as I thought it would be cheating if I tried to emulate other people, this was a mistake which cost me dearly early (thank you to /ic/ for setting me straight). I started building up people who inspire me and I do studies of their works and try to understand their processes, if anything I haven't been doing it enough but these are the people that I really want to get to personally, I've tried finding out their methods of learning and who tutored/inspired them to get where they are now.

>Jamie Jones
>Anthony Jones (taking his course when it next opens as I didn't have the money this September)
>John Park (his mechs are delicious)
>Phil Hale
>John Berkey (I've avoided mechanical and vehicle design for ages but his work makes me wanna do >it badly)

It's not really that I'm coming back, by "took a large gap" I meant it just with learning creature design, it's something I suck pretty bad at and I know it's one of my weak spots so now I'm coming back and working on getting it to a better level by studying and combining.

I say my motivation never really changed, I wanted to draw so I could improve something I love doing and to make my grandma proud. She was the one who got me into drawing and she never personally "made it" even though it was her dream to always become a successful illustrator, I'm now working to achieve that dream in her place and of course she's getting pretty old so I need to get gud fast by grinding hard. Either way it's something I love and I am mainly doing it for myself but also for her.

>pic-related, it's a picture of my grandma when she was young, I keep in my art folder to remind me to work hard

I'm not him (and I know you know that you smart ass), but if he does have any problems it's that he doesn't pander ENOUGH.

He might be doing freelance work on the side too there's really no way to know. If someone pays you to make art, at least if it's implied to be for a commercial purpose, you can't post it on your public accounts so that's kind of a double-edged sword, there. You're making money from a client but might be, at least temporarily, stifling your opportunity to build your own brand.

Also I just noticed, he has two semi-recent pieces of fanart he did on twitter and he didn't tag them AT ALL. If you're lurking Darky you really have to make sure you include a "#<insert famous intellectual property name here>" whenever you draw something like that (at least that's how I think twitter works lmoa)

Before I start, your mindset must be the first thing you should take care of.You cannot do multiple hrs a day with all the distractions around. So the drawing part is not where it really begins. I meditate 15 mins every morning, I also go to the gym 3x a week. I think they are more important than drawing because you cannot draw if you're not in the right mindset to start with.

I studied the fundamentals : anatomy, form proportion, gesture, values, all the beginner stuff. It is not fun really and I failed alot specially in the beginning. I usually tackle one subject at a time. I study anatomy 30 mins and put what I learned in the next hr, I study perspective for 30 mins and practice it in the next hr. slowly but surely improvement takes in. do more of the practice than watching or reading tutorials thats the key. Meditation and working out helps tremendously because it keeps you away from the negativity and makes you keep going forward. It also helps to listen to people like Tony Robbins for motivation.

Anon, sorry to say this, but you haven't improved much... You ditched the flat coloring for pencil rendering, but it's clear you still don't understand how the planes of the face work, you are still just flat painting, but with grey instead of colors.

The beginning is rough if you're serious about it. The fun picks up again once you start working on your own images and you only study to supplement your work. You hate probably everything you do right now but that's normal and it will become easier to draw things and enjoy the process later on.
Nontheless, take a day or two off every now and then. Your brain is like a muscle and needs rest from time to time to process what you've learned.

Yeah, I hated the feeling of dread that drawing faces gave me. That's why I'm drawing mainly faces now.
I plan to learn how to draw the human body one part at a time, then just combine it to make full body drawings.

Between that I try to force myself, from time to time, to practice other things like perspective.

>> No.3149176

>>3149168
That's sort of how I'm learning too, by taking on one thing at a time of the whole, but I consistently do the whole quite often too between every milestone. And not just in the end when you think you know everything. It gives good overview to do both the small and the big view and never fokus on only one of the two

Well atleast for me maybe others such as you learn better in other ways who can know us except ourself

>> No.3149189

>>3149176
Oh no, I also do the whole body, but not that often and usually it's just 2 or 3 drawings. Then I return back to grinding specific body parts.

There are times when I'm sick of grinding but I can't break my daily routine, so I just draw some animu girls form pivix. I see lots of people here forcing others to ONLY grind, every day. Taking a break and drawing something you truly like from time to time is a really important thing. You don't want to burn out too early.

The top cat barely looks ethereal other than its eyes, which are its best features. Also its tail is much less menacing because its further from the neck and is less curled. It looks like the tail could have just incidentally swung over instead of being a deliberate choice.

Putting the new drawing on the left and the old drawing on the right is the standard way to do these improvement pics. Pretty much every pic does it. If you put the old one on the left and the new one on the right, then you are being needlessly different and will confuse people.

English is read left to right, so you should put the first picture you want people to see on the left. Normally the "after" picture is better, so of course that one goes on the left, so that people get the best first impression.

You see where they are now, and if you are interested in how they have improved you move to the left and see the before picture. If someone loses interest after one picture, then they are left with the lasting impression of your current skill level. If the before picture was on the left, then people are left with the impression of where you were x number of years ago.

You can be really good at painting but still don't really know how to draw, but all your stuff will end up looking really weird. That's imo the biggest thing I'm struggling with personally, I can kinda paint or at the very least render something to look decent but my underlying drawing ability is close to beginner tier. I'd say focus on getting good at the thing you value the most, in my case painting and rendering, but still learn how to draw proper, something I'm trying to do now.

2007 was the start for digital for me-- that picture was of konata from lucky star for a thread on /a/ I believe (and I definitely would not call it good). If you're having trouble with digital, don't worry about it. It's not really that intuitive to use a tablet at first so don't be discouraged if you find it difficult.

I pretty much only draw anime girls. Yeah I dunno, I'm not a professional and it's not my career so I just kind of always drew whatever I wanted. Just so happened that they were anime girls. That's not to say I didn't do studies though-- the studies just happened to be incorporated into pictures of anime girls.

Was getting my undergrad physics degree at the time and had a gf so that sucked up a ton of time. Between academics, social life and extracurriculars I just stopped drawing altogether. Then we broke up and I graduated, was out with a job for a bit and realized I had tons of time to myself. Got inspired by some friends who were artists as well and decided I'd try my hand at it again.

I started here on /ic/, learned about loomis, scott robertson and all the other fundie stuff. I went through most of it but only the basics. Met a bunch of great people on a google hangout who were practicing and trying to learn as well as a few people who were really good and willing to help. After a year of practicing with them I attended an atelier for a year ( best decision of my life! ), I had to take a year off but did a lot of self-study and now I'm attending my second year.
What in my opinion helped the most was doing both super long and quick studies. For example 2 week long figure studies and casts that take about a month at the atelier with great teachers and my own quick studies, sketches and portraits which I did on my own.
Also doing finished paintings from imagination. I always have paintings by master painters I like open in a pureref file. Those paintings have been my goal and "this is what your painting should look like". As well as references to fix the problems in my paintings. I would not finish a painting untill I was satisfied with the quality of it. With every new painting the quality bar went up and I learned a lot more.

It really helps to meet a few nice artists who want to improve as much as you do. Studying and helping each other is waaaay easier than doing everything on your own! You can also ask professional artists of who you like the work to look at your portfolio and give you a critique, if they are not super famous you can often get a reply back. Most artists are super nice.

Also!! I know a lot of people on /ic/ disagree with me on this, but learn to simplify and draw accurately! This is why ateliers have bargue plates. The charles bargue drawing course is available for free online as pdf. If you are able to draw accurately it gets way easier to see problems in your art and it gets easier to fix them and learn more.

I hope this helps a little. I've attached some 2015 and 2016 stuff.

In your opinion where should I have been by now?
I've come to realize over the few years that I've been drawing that progress isn't something static like "in 2 years you should be here and in 6 years here" but it's totally dependent on the intelligence, natural aptitude and passion of the individual in question.
I have passion and a little bit of natural aptitude since I have very good visual memory, but I'm very stupid, probably below average in terms of IQ. So my progress will not be the same as someone who draws the same amount as me but fill all the 3 categories that I listed above, or someone who's just smart and "talented" lol

>> No.3156100

>>3156088
Natural aptitude and intelligence are kind of the same thing. Someone who has high intelligence in general would have "natural aptitude" for art as in he will be able to understand concepts easily. Do you actually draw 6-8hours a day? Or is that just your estimate?

If you don't measure your time efficiently you won't even know how much you draw. All these people saying it takes 1/2/3/4/5/x years to Y are dumb. Measure time in actual hours or don't measure it at all.

I can draw 2h/day for 5 years and get nowhere.

Pomodoro technique is only good when you're a lazyfuck. If you can put in 6-8h/day you should've stopped relying on it. Your brain will want those 5minutes and won't focus on the work as efficiently if you didn't rely on the timer. Flow will come much harder to you if you take frequent breaks.

Measure time, there's bunch of apps for doing it automatically. I still don't know how much you've put in. Based on your previous post you said you started hard in 2015. That's something like 4000-5000hours depending on how much you put in, should be really good by now.

You either didn't measure your time well, only did imagination pieces, didn't commit to deliberate practice or something else.
