I never got bullied but I got used and manipulated by one. I was going through probably the shittiest stage of my life with the worst depression I've ever had. At just the right time, miss popular, charming artist girl PMs me asking for my Skype. We start talking, her mostly initiating our chats even!
>feels good man
She asks me to work on her comic with her
>that would be an honor!
It was at first. But for all the art I do for her, I get nothing in return. Not a sketch, not a damn thing. Kinda shitty of her but I rationalize it because I get to be friends with Miss popular artist. Stupid move.
>she starts asking me for even more work
>she begs me to enter her art contest (which was fixed for her friend to win)
>one night at 2am, she needs help designing an album cover for her boyfriends CD
I do all of this shit and get nothing in return. Start to feel bitter about it a few months in. Still no art.
>getting that mad exposure though mmm gimme summa that
I check on her art every now and then. It's even worse than before she and I met 4 years ago. We don't talk anymore though.
pretty sure she talked shit about me to her fans/friends though. It's her MO.
I learned from this though, don't be a cuck. Give people one chance and one chance only.

I have a blind spot for that too. It feels good until I finally start to feel bitter. It's more an issue with me, than with the person.
>designing an album cover for her boyfriends CD

I've hung around many many artists over the years online, especially on places like iscribble (since 2007) that's a LOT of artists, and I've almost never been bullied by someone with a serious amount of skill.

It's usually just kids who are starting out and I can probably chalk that down to age.

Here on /ic/ I suspect, may just be those kinds of people - lots of little kids, particuarly boys maybe? And they can be bullying despite their love of art.

So, I won't be mean and call them 'not real artists' even though they're beginning and young, but I will say that from really skilled artists, I've very-very run into that attitude. Not that it's impossible.

I took an animation class which I'm not very good at animating I can draw but I just can't animate. Anyways we would occasionally have people who worked on the industry come and take a look at our stuff and we would also do online conferences where we would show our work and pros would give us critique. I'm usually a shy guy but one day I finally got the courage to show an animation and the guy who had previously worked on Disney goes complete Simon Cowell on me. Everything is wrong, the timing, the spacing, my extremes, no arcs, he tells me that he can tell that I'm lazy and that I'm not putting enough effort and so on. I legit almost wanted to cry, but in the end he always gave solid crit and while that was only one class I took out of curiosity I learned a lot.

I was in a live voicechat with one of my favorite artists from when I was a kid.
I was really close to his skill level actually and I was super proud of it.
Everyone in the stream seemed to like me a lot, but he just was nothing but silent and when I posted my work I accidently linked to some porn I did and all he said was "Why would you draw that" in monotone.
After a while of talking about art on the stream and having fun with the other guests, he just kicked me from voice and laughed to himself.
Then when I just said in text chat it's been nice and Ill be going.
Some dude from the voicecall then sent me a recording of my childhood idol artist talking shit about me for a solid 5 minutes.

A part of me died on that day. He was one of the central reasons I started drawing. I remember copying his drawings to capture his style, and then later finding /ic/ to actually get good. Then after more than 6 years I finally get to talk with him and show him my art and tell him he is one of the reasons I got into art, and, this happens.

Haven't really been bullied except anonymously on here. There was this one time I messaged a popular artist and his response annoyed me but it wasn't really bullying. He was bitching about something and no one was replying to him so I decided to try and comfort him, then he just gave me a one word reply saying "sigh." I didn't really reply after that and it kinda irked me seeing a grown man acting like a teenager. I don't really interact with any artists aside from posting on /ic/ though so that may be why.

One time I was in a shitty mood and left a sarcastic comment on some person's drawing. All I said was "I love how her arm is broken", which I admit was a stupid comment and I get why they would have been offended, but they didn't just get mad. They got pissed. We got into an argument where i tried to apologise, but they wouldn't accept it saying I had to promise never to say things in a mean way ever again. I got a bunch of PMs from their friends calling me an awful person, saying I had X days to apologise or else, trying to guilt me saying the artist had a panic attack because of me.

All because I pointed out that they drew the arm wrong in a mean way.

Many artists don't want to talk about art in the same way that some people don't want to talk about work during their off time. They don't need you to gush over them, ask technical questions, or give unsolicited critiques of their art on social networking sites or on their streams. Be social. Be as normal as you can be and respect boundaries. Work into your questions after you've become a familiar face.

There are artists here who would redline and give advice to strangers, but ignore you if you directly approached them on their twitters or tumblrs, because that's not what they want out of their time there.

I tried taking art classes multiple times through out middle and high school, and I was extremely used to being bullied about my art. The only time something ever hurt was when we had a guest artist from the local art gallery come down and they would say things to each student about their work. When they came to mine they simply stared at it for a while and then said I should consider a different hobby. Hit me really hard and I switched classes over to creative writing instead.

To think they started off their entire speech at the beginning of class with "Anyone can become an artist, you just need to practice."

There was a time back then when they got really big headed, even Dan despite him being leagues behind Dave. This was before Dave came clean about being caught shoplifting too, he used to tell everyone how he worked hard and saved up so he could then spend a year grinding and everyone believed it.

They're just assholes, it has nothing to do with art.

My painting teacher used to just destroy peoples work, regardless of whether they had been working for weeks/months and spent dozens of hours. He would pick up your brush and just destroy the whole thing, wipe it all out then he'd say "this just looks like shit" and walk away. Nobody could say anything he had tenure and our gpa was on the line. He made girls cry in my class. I swear he was like negan from the walking dead, he'd just brain your whole painting before your eyes like that...then he'd fall asleep in class. Little to no constructive criticism. He was a real artist and showed at the whitney museum.

I've been put down by all types of people but never been shit talked to by an artist irl. One time I posted some sketches in a thread on /ic/ and when one anon liked it/asked how I got muh style another one chimed in with a "you could get that 'good' in a few weeks" and ignored me when I asked what was shitty about it.

That felt pretty bad but since they didn't call me out with a (You) specifically I didn't take it to heart. That much.

I never got bullied but I'm afraid I might bully someone by mistake
I just get really annoyed when people above a certain age draw naively without any improvement but still post their stuff

How the fuck do I get rid of that feeling? I like supporting new artists but something about seeing always the same basic mistakes and objectively unappealing art just makes me angry so I try not to interact with them at all, because I don't know what to say that isn't negative

Reminds me of an incident on instagram of some artist I used to follow..

>Kid comments on artist's piece
>some anatomical flaws, and in general wasn't up to par with artist's usual works
>artist replies in broken English along the lines of: "It's my art, why do you care?"

Kid then proceeds to get attacked by fans about how it's the artist's style and gets shamed for having the audacity to give critique when the artist hasn't asked for it. Like literal paragraphs about how it's some universal rule for artists.
Like what the actual fuck?
You know the things I'd do for even one critique on my shitty art?
