IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

How do I achieve "conciseness" in my work?

Essentially, what can I do to make sure I focus on the most important subjects/forms/shapes/lines in an image? It's difficult for me to do things in a distinct order because I have to keep in mind where details are going to be at a later stage. Are there any particular exercises that are especially helpful for improving focus and "getting the big picture"?

Work on your values, get a range of pencils from 2H to 6B or 8B (I would recommend 2H, HB, 2B, 4B and 6B to start). Also pay attention to the highlights, especially in the hair.

Also, the image looks flat, try to get a feel for the form and shade accordingly, don't just copy. Work on your lines, think about what you draw and ghost them before doing to avoid chicken scratches, also start looking into line weight.

Try something more simple that you can easily draw and make look good. It will give you a boost of confidence and give you more practice. Try drawing a bowl of fruit or random objects from life with simple shapes. If that sounds boring to you, at least try something less complicated than your picture.

The thing you're trying to draw is too difficult for a complete beginner. Even more advance people here will struggle with drawing that.

Hey I've got a question. I come from /fit/ and there we tell you to do ss, drink a gallon of milk a day, squat and eat oats. It will generally work for a while but after 6 months or so you will have giant legs, not much else, and probably be somewhat fat.

s "Loomis" kind of the /ic/ equivalent of that? I've been drawing every day for about 1-3 hours for about 3 weeks and I was drawing daily a few months ago too. I'm close to 100 hours total. I've seen some nice gains, Finished fun with a pencil, drawing on the right side, keys to drawing, & perspective made easy, but I've kind of hit a brick wall on figure drawing for all it's worth. Feel like it's well beyond what I can really do.

I really don't know what to practice or how to proceed from here.
Is Loomis a meme like ss + gomad in that it does work but only sort of?

Here's some progress.

Yo dudes, I'm just gonna give it out there for what it's worth.

Back in Summer 2016, I was drawing portraits, and I was doing really well with accuracy.

That lasted up to beginning of Fall. During the fall I didn't draw at all, and picked it up back in Winter (february 2016), when I picked it up again, I was awful, and my lines were very very inaccurate, and not because of the break (I took it before). I stopped and picked it back up again last month and I'm again very accurate.

From today, to Summer last year the only thing in common was that I was in the middle of no-fap and took drawing to keep myself distracted. I'm not sure if they're correlated but if you ever thought of giving it a shot, who knows if that may actually improve focus and make your lines better. IDK maybe it's a coincidence, but maybe you could try if it's not hard for you. I started drawing on day 8 or so.

GL.

I'm sorry. But you have to consider some of the things that get posted here. There are a bunch of beginners that don't read book explanations for exercises and post their work, assuming responses would always be beneficial. There are some that rush through their work, then post here asking how to fix the mistakes they're already seeing.

Take it slow. If you can already see some mistakes take the time and try to fix them to the best of your ability. Google shit out. Work just a little harder. You're your best critic, so please respect yourself and your audience and take the time to fix and actually THINK about what you're doing. Don't rush, good practice comes slow.

Posts like the one I responded to are a little insulting because anon didn't take the time to work on what he's doing, and then expects us to help him. If you don't bother doing things for yourself why should others help you? You're not truly trying. Any advice would be lost.

I think it's because there are a large number of kids growing up with animation, and then drawing it early on, but I've noticed what I like to call "cell shading art."

This is where a person will have about the same level of detail as a single animation frame.

If you are going for unnerving things try to do hyperrealism, but distort it in a way that you've already done.

I think it would look perfect, and you would get more praise.

For me personally, I find it more helpful to do a tight line drawing focusing on proportion and accuracy, and then blocking in my largest shadow masses and forms once I know my drawing is accurate.

Sometimes it is also helpful to look at artist's drawings or preliminary work to understand how they approach form.

Mark Tennant is an artist I really admire, and I think in looking at his drawings, you can understand how important accuracy in drawing is, and how so little tone can do so much.

I envy your confidence, but your construction and proportions are abysmal.

First thing: your dude shouldn't be 7 heads tall when his knees are bent, it means you're stretching parts of his body in order to reach that mark considering he's all in the same perspective.

Are you following any materials/methods or just feeling things out on your own? There's very simple ways to construct the various body parts and then put them together. You're over-complicating some parts, under-complicating others, and then holding them together with toothpicks and glue. A good example is your lack of understanding on how the head works. Pic related is Loomis' excellent explanation for the construction of the head. Skim his books and look at the diagrams, there's a reason they're recommended for beginners.

If this is your second day overall of formally learning to draw, you should focus on individual parts and fundies instead of trying to draw figures. I'm not saying you have to just draw boxes in perspective or whatever, draw simpler forms and then try putting together different shapes to create individual body parts. Drill each part until you find a really good way to build it before moving on to another one.

You can't build a cabin directly from trees, the trees have to be cut down and shaped into the right lumber before they can form a proper structure. Likewise, you won't learn anything from trying to draw the human figure if you don't understand construction and form first.

>> No.3103354

>>3101932
Loomis isn't a meme, you're supposed to start with FWAP and skim for his diagrams. What you should get out of it is a good understanding of fundamentals and the basics of construction.

The issue is similar to /fit/ memes in that it's not a comprehensive method. Loomis won't actually develop your skills, he will set down the guidelines that you build your skills on. Only way you can improve is by practicing. Look at the exercises of Drawabox to see what you should actually be DOING to get better. You'll have to repeat the same things over and over, slightly modifying your methods each time until you can get desirable results. It's a grind, just like getting fit. You won't get better just from knowing how to get better, you have to actually put it into practice and develop the muscle memory.

>your dude shouldn't be 7 heads tall when his knees are bent, it means you're stretching parts of his body in order to reach that mark considering he's all in the same perspective.
I thought 6 to 8 heads was normal? Also he's kinda supposed to be on his toes, but I just drew random shapes for feet since I haven't really learned to draw them yet.

What kind of brush did you use for the light? Looks like an eraser trying to remove watercolor. Also it depends on what kind of effect you want.
Try to think of it like this. What is the surface of the face like? Is it dry, wet, sweaty? When it comes to lighting, it's crucial to know how light reflects off of different surfaces, and where the light comes from. If you wanna get good at shading you need to make at least one grey scale, perferably pencil on a paper for starters. It was the very first thing i learned to do at art school.
Overall the light does a poor job of defining the face, but keep working anonymous, and it's gonna look better.

>> No.3104192

Composition is a technique, and a big aspect of any picture.
Composition is how you line up everything in you picture, people, objects, foreground, background, lighting, etc. You use it to draw the veiwers attention to where you want their eyes to be looking (which can be more than one place). where characters are placed and where they look is important, even if you just want something to look nice.
You don't value one technique over the other, because things like composition, color, values, perspective, and light all serve to add feelings, story, or just plain asthetics to the picture.
If you're thinking technique as in naturalism (life-like drawing) then yes, composition is more important. Because you can use a different style, like someting toony or abstract or pixelart. But if you loose something important in your picture by not drawing naturalistic, then it doesn't matter if the composition is bad or not, because it will have nothing to do with the problem.
