its technology has been around for over 5 years (maybe more i'm not sure) and other companies are turning their normal tablets into drawing tablets too
how come it still goes for over $1000? how come the market hasn't made it more affordable

Because people still buy it at that price, even if competitors are catching up people still stick with wacom because it beats taking a chance with a $500-600 knockoff tablet that may break on you.

Not that wacom doesn't have it's own issues but you have a better chance of it being reliable

Because it's still retardedly better than any of its competition at what it does? Seriously, every so often I drop by a MS Store to see if the N-Trig has gotten its shit together and it hasn't. Someday... someday far away it probably will, but it's not even close right now.

It will be a glorious day when they figure it out though, because I don't like paying thousands of dollars for these things either.
