This is true.

But I would also argue in a lot of cases if said artist put more time into learning figures and anatomy they'd be able to draw a much more natural looking figure, with better poses/composition, using less ref in a shorter amount of time.

I see plenty of professional level artists making figural work that looks amazing using way less specific reference material compared to an artist like Donato Giancola or Dan Dos Santos who rely heavily on photo ref, shooting almost 1 for 1 photos (Like noah did) of figures in boring poses wearing equally boring costumes just to trace or copy them.

Sometimes using ref can very much become a hindrance that stagnates your work. Take the noah pcs for example, the figures are just naked human figures. No deviation in the body type or exaggerated features or costume......boring. Looks like he just learned how to paint nebula and wanted to do a whole painting based on that.

>> No.3072575

>>3072561

>>3071974 Is right though. You may not care but everyone on here constantly asks, "is it ok to do this?" or "Is tracing bad?" or "Is using ref bad?" ect. and this is a prime example of the answer.

Using photo ref is fine but not a substitute to studying and being able to draw with out it from memory. The two compliment one another. You might not be able to paint photo real from memory like a Brad rigney but relying too heavily on ref produces this kind of painting.

Morla of the story? Want to paint better figures, go study and paint figures.

Of course but that isn't the goal for some and I'm willing to bet many artists are content with where their strengths lie as long as it's acceptable and pays the bills. Not everybody has it in them to become the next Mullins, Jaime or Ruan and being a pro in every possible aspect which I think is what /ic/ (>muh /ic/ isn't one person meme despite the parroting you always see when it's time to bash an artist) believes the end goal SHOULD be for any artist worth a damn.
