Do I really need a graphite stick, plastic plane, mirror, and viewfinder to use this? Is it not possible with just pencil + paper?

>> No.3051003

The book is a great introduction to drawing, but it can be discarded after pretty much the first or second chapter.

Just get Keys to Drawing.
It's the superior book.

Seconding this, do you need that stuff to start off?
Or does everyone just use tablets nowadays? That book is from 1999

Oh I am laffin... Barrington Barber would at least tell you to use A2 paper and charcoal -- but maybe that's not the Edwards method?

There's nothing in that list you don't already have, anon. A viewfinder is just a fancy word for "piece of cardboard with a hole in it". A pencil *is* a graphite stick. The picture plane is just your viewfinder with two bits of string taped to it.

This. Just get a regular wooden pencil and use a razor blade to sharpen to get a long graphite stick.

They are just props and most are used for only a few exercises in order to make you think, don't waste time trying to find the perfect tool for the job, especially the Viewfinder.

Plastic plane = any transparent paper will replace it
Viewfinder = read >>3051311, it's exactly just that, no need for anything fancy. Hell, you could use your two hands and they would make a nice Viewfinder.

Mirror is the only stuff necessary, you won't be able to make the first and last exercises (self-portrait) without it. It is an important exercise in the book. You're not Dracula and you'll need one as an artist anyway or to shave properly.

Keep in mind it's intended to beginners of all level, she doesn't say that it's ok to draw on a small paper all your life. Using a bigger paper would distract people because they aren't used to draw big yet.

This book is a meme. It can be skipped by spending 5 minutes to look up what symbol drawing is.

>> No.3051732

dont even bother with this bok
its a piece of shit

>> No.3051814

Its written by a woman for fucks sake, there should be a better alternate with a male author.

>> No.3053140

The drawing on the cover isn't even done with graphite.
